Alamy.com / work flow for Alamy
« on: January 13, 2007, 22:17 »
I just don't get it.  God help me but it just doesn't make sense.

I shoot with a 10+ mp camera, and to get them up to Alamy specs of 54 megabytes

Can somebody give me the work flow working from RAW to get it to their specs.  AND, after doing all this, how does it look at 100%.  Mine look like a blur????

I found two or three posts on this forum about this site, and just wondering if anyone else is posting there.

They seem to be more current event and topical than the other "beautiful business woman in bikini bottom on the beach with cell phone" sites.   And they seem to frequently send out emails with current assignments on them from magazines, periodicals, and newspapers.

Any feedback?

I'm trying to be serious here

You get your inspiration when you "see" it.

With all the mundane things we see everyday, in an instant, looking at a common thing,  something happens and you visualize an image that sends sparks down your neurons which triggers a shutter release.

Most of us have taken photos of everything and anywhere we've been.  Some for fun, some for remuneration, and some just because it flashed.

Sometimes your vision can be recreated in a studio, sometimes if you don't take it when you "see" it, it's gone and never will be the same.

That's why it's an art.

Off Topic / Print sales
« on: December 29, 2006, 14:57 »
YIKES!! print?  Yeah, I know this is a microsite forum, but this is anything not relating to micro isn't it?

I have a question for those more experienced than myself.  I've been reading on other pro photo forums that many of the members sell prints on line, particularly fine art type prints.  To my understanding, the host keeps something like 15% of digital download prices with the photog getting 85%.  For prints they do, the photog gets a small commission plus an 85% of the download price.  I hope that makes sense.

In general, there is a hosting fee of about $150 US for a year.  The one that's recommended is "smug....something"

Does anybody here use this type of outlet for print sales?  Results?  As some of you may know I'll be traveling for about 3 years or more, and something like this would be an asset as most of the pictures I take will be fine art or travel related.

Any Ideas?

Featurepics.com / Re: Anyone selling at Featurepics?
« on: December 28, 2006, 10:02 »
Not many sales there for me either, but, ya gotta love the site.  Set your own prices?  I've heard of people setting their prices up to $200.  I don't know if they sell, but ???  Most my prices are from 1 to 5, with an ocassional 8, I've sold at 6.

I think, or maybe better, wish, all sites operated on the Featurepics format.

Karimela,

Yeah, that's me, Ninon, I've requested several times for them to delete my images, they're still there under the other stock site names and Ninon,  I put a bunch under other stock site names hoping to get some attention, no luck.  I think it's running on remote control or something.

Cameras / Lenses / Help on camera info
« on: December 04, 2006, 19:16 »
I need some help on a camera that was given to me.

I was at a yard sale, and was looking at this thing and the seller asked if I liked it, and then proceeded to give it to me for free.  Not to turn anything down, I took it, now what to do with it.  It's in 110 format, as I recall some kind of cartrige.  It's a nifty looking camera, and from what I read it's good for down to about 12 feet underwater.  I know with 35mm I can get large sizes when developed, but what about 110?  I don't presume to be able to shoot stock with this unless it's on some of the sites that accept 800mp.

Does anyone here have any experience with one of these, either above or below water?  Do they still sell film?  I stopped at a couple stores and the clerk just looked at me kinda funny

It's called a Minolta Weathermatic with a big A on it.  Any input will be appreciated.......ian

I think I may be hijacking snapshots thread, and I didn't want to do that.  To answer a couple of questions and then we should get back on subject:

PIRATES?  Yeah, lots of them, mostly found at marinas, boatyards, and boating supply stores. They rob you blind. and you don't even get a kiss.

Fintastique, a floating photo school ;D  Have to figure out who the instructor would be.  I had planned on hiring out, I have kayaks, diving gear, and am a pretty good cook - French Provincial crossed with Asian cuisine, but chartering out would mean I'd have to put up with charterers.  Somewhere on some forum, I had offered a week trip to 4 of the channel islands ending with San Miguel, the supposed site of Juan Cabrillos burial (he explored the west coast), no takers, I went anyway, 2 weeks and had a great time.  I'm trying to figure out the best way to do underwater photography without all the gear and money associated with it.  Was able to get some really good pics in clear, cold, pristine waters, but could not upres them enough to put them into stock, so I made greeting cards out of them.

Most of my sailing these days is solo, after being widowed 5 years ago.  I've started looking for a 1st mate, but without much practice, I'm a bit clumsy at it.  But am getting better.

OK, how about back to topic,  sorry snapshot

Thanks for the compliments.  It's something I've always wanted to do since I started sailing as a kid.

To start, I have three computers on board.  Two laptops, one hooked to the navigation system, and a spare, and a desktop built in to the port bulkhead, two printers, canon and lexmar, and a HP fax machine.

Right now, I'm in my home harbor, Channel Islands, CA, but things keep getting more expensive that regular guys are being priced out of the marinas.  I'm waiting a bit for personal reasons, and for the hurricane season to settle down, and then I'll be out again.

Internet connection isn't as bad as it used to be. I tried satellite, but $$$$ was a bit much.  WiFi is an option someplaces although not a lot of coverage south of the boarder, and where it is available, there's a premium on the service for the duration of the connection.

Most harbors, even little villages that have any tourist traffic, have some type of internet cafe which cater to the cruiser.  It's generally cheap - well,  compared to satellite- and they're relatively high speed and a good meeting place with other sailors.  I'm surprised at how many people have opted for this lifestyle, I keep running into people I've met, some years before, and for the most part, they're friendly people.  Some young, some old.  I wish I had been able to do this 20 years ago, and am happy these 30 somethings, are able to do what they want, they home school their kids . . . . hey, I'm rambling, got to make a note to not do that ;D

I'm more or less retired, did the international corporate thing in 29 countries for 30 years until I said enough of this. Looking through my storage, I found thousands of photographs from around the world, mostly slides stuck to those plastic pages we used to use, and wondered what I could do with these?

I got hooked on stock and rights managed.

I now sail up and down the eastern pacific coast, on my 55 ft sailboat,  south in winter, north in summer, taking pics which are starting to pay for my lifestyle. Next year, I'm off to Mexico, down to Costa Rica, and then...??? should provide a goodly amount of shots to fill my portfolio.

I think it's dead.  Are they putting all the sales in their pockets and not paying the photogs?  I don't know, but I haven't had a sale there ever.  If I had the time, I'd delete all my pics.

Don't get me started on the part time site CanStockPhoto.

Off Topic / Re: Grey Market Camera
« on: October 06, 2006, 16:18 »
I may not be 100% correct on this, but gray market cameras do carry a warranty, usually not for the country in which you purchased, but in the country of manufacture. Sometimes, it can be sent in to the local mfg repair shop for repairs. You'd have to contact them for a W/O or authorization.

Better yet, most cameras bought from ebay or on the net have a 10 to 14 day exchange policy depending on the seller. Most do. If you haven't gone over the time limit, you can return it.

If they don't there's always the "squeeky wheel" approach with ebay or paypal.

If you bought it out the back of a truck at a rest stop, clone it out.

Good Luck,

Ian

I personally don't get the concept.  I submitted 3 of my newest top sellers, like I mean really good downloads at other sites, and one was accepted, two rejected, although if you click on one of the rejections, you get a view count and sales.  HUH?

I think they've got to get their sh_t together before I submit anymore.  The site reads like it was made by a bunch of high school droupout Southern California beach boys. Hey Duuude, wanna buy a picture?"  "Yeah, cool, getta token"

Hey,

there's several sites that sell per photo downloads, credit card or paypal, check on the list.  It also depends on what type of pic you want.  prices run from 1 to 2 dollars US, That's my understanding anyway.  Check out Featurepics.com they're an up and coming site with some potential.

After leaf's recent thread on site policy, I want to tone this down a little, so just for info, if you search for "fotolia", or "shutterstock" on this site, you will come up with 476 hits. usstockphoto.com started with a really user friendly format with fast reviews, but it seems the lights on, but nobody's home.

Hi guys, my 2 cents:

I agree with fintastique writing:  "Accusing sites of illegal activities could be libelous

but warning of other Micro stockers of strange behaviour is quite another thing. There are a lot of sites out there and I'm sure some are making offers too good to be true."

One of the advantages of a talk forum like this is to alert other members to unusual behavour.  The admins of all these commercial sites should be reading this forum, and if there is something unusual written about them, they have the opportunity to respond to the concern.

AND, as we have seen, there has been highly questionable behavour by some micro payment sites which, in my case has never been addressed on that site through either the forum or private email from admin.

Unusual        YES
