iStockPhoto.com / Re: Video in iStock
« on: December 21, 2018, 11:20 »
So, anyone has sold a video in iStock for more than 0.63 usd? Non-exclusive. Thanks.

Enviado desde mi ALP-L29 mediante Tapatalk

I see you posted this question in its own thread as well as the November stats one so I'll reply here too...

I've sold one for as much as $108.17 (presumably an extended license) but I've also sold them for a lot less, indeed, for as little as $0.11.

My overall RPD for video on iStock is $4.51, since ESP;  not very impressive!  I am non-exclusive for video though, and rarely upload any to iStock nowadays unless they're ones that never sold anywhere else as it simply doesn't seem worth it.

You do get better rates if you become Exclusive, but as they don't accept editorial video that isn't an option as far as I'm concerned.

So 60Fps - 4k video for 0.63 cents - it's just bizarre. From January I will start to upload to other stock agencies.
So that's the thing? Anyone sold video in istock for more than 0.63?

For 4K you should get more $

It was probably sold as HD, Shutterstock automatically provide optional lower resolutions.

I use MPEG Streamclip for simple edits (cutting off start and end, removing sound, generating suitable output codecs).  It's free.

...the reason would probably be to escape the 30% tax on US earnings. Russia/Ukraine won't have a tax treaty with the US, EU countries do.

Did you just make that up?! The withholding rate for Spain is 5%... the withholding rate for Russia is 0%.

Really? I'm surprised the Russians have got a more generous treaty with the US than the EU. I have seen people from former Warsaw Pact countries complaining about losing 30% and then having to pay local taxes on top. I assumed Russia was the same.
But,, yes, you're quite right, it's here http://taxsummaries.pwc.com/ID/United-States-Corporate-Withholding-taxes

According to that chart, it's not actually a treaty with the EU - the rates are applied to individual countries, with some being zero and some not.

Which is good news for those of us in the UK, because it presumably won't suddenly become subject to a 30% rate after Brexit but will remain in the 0% bracket.

Actually a BME for me on SS.

But then I only do video there.

Photo Critique / Re: Please critique and feedback my portfolio!
« on: August 19, 2018, 09:57 »
Hi folks

What do you think about my Portfolio? https://www.shutterstock.com/g/cicloco

I have 3'500 images in my SS Portfolio and sell 250 images/month on SS in average.
I'm photographing since longer time, but still calling me a semi prof. At the time I'm travelling around the world in a VW Vanagon/Kombi. So i have the nice chance to get to very different locations... and try to do some nice work in landscape and wildlife... I try to upgrade my skills in photography and postprocessing almost every day and would really apreciate your feedback!
By the way, i'm not very into special art postprocessing..., would it be an upgrade to my portfolio more saturating my landscapes or doing other HDR and/or art postporcessing with it? Ideas? Till now i tried to let it natural...

Thanks in advance!

Yes, nice shots, I like them a lot - and you certainly get around - but as already said, wildlife and landscapes aren't big sellers!

That said, you don't have to stop taking what you like to get more sales - you must be spending a lot of time in towns and villages on your travels, so you could be getting pictures in those places too.  Details of shops and markets, food, stuff that shows local culture and activities, even if editorial.  If you can get model releases for local people, better yet.  You have some I know but you must have plenty of spare time to go walkabout and get more!

As for the colours, they are a bit vivid to my taste, but at least they stand out.  No, I don't think  they need more saturation and definitely not HDR unless there really is a good reason for it.

Stock photos is the only viable option. Stock video is a very small market.

Why not do both?  Video certainly takes more time and effort, but as a very small contributor - I have a total of some 280 clips, not all on all sites, against about 3800 images on iS and a number on Alamy RM - I find video makes around 20-25% of my stock income.

So I consider video well worth the effort.  And it's fun!

iStockPhoto.com / Re: How to specify if a file is editorial?
« on: January 17, 2018, 07:08 »
You have to create separate batches for editorial - click on the "Create Batch" icon on the top row, then select "Editorial" in the next screen.

I find DeepMeta the most comprehensive, and TodayIs20 for an alternative view.

General Photography Discussion / Re: Eclipse (2017)
« on: August 18, 2017, 09:20 »
I took pics of the 1999 eclipse in Hungary.  Don't recall exactly what I did - I think I probably used projection to line it up roughly, then did final adjustments when it went total... be careful to avoid eye damage.  Certainly didn't do the camera (an Olympus OM-4Ti) any harm.

I had a telescope giving me a larger projection too, so I could see what was going on.

That was on film of course.  Worked out OK - it's even sold as stock a number of times - though not as sharp as I would have liked.

38
Yes, I got one, and as far as I know it's genuine - they've done this before and used surveymonkey.

BTW, by posting the URL as you have, I think some one else could take that and fill it in for you... I'd suggest you edit it out.

39
As mentioned, start by ensuring the shutter speed is about half the frame rate - so 1/50th of a second for 24 fps - all you have to do in this case is use ISO 200 and that would have done it.  Always best to use a lower ISO if you can anyway.

As for the timelapse, did you crop it to 1920 x 1080 px?

40
You don't need a Mac to create Quicktime MOV with PhotoJPEG compression.

If whatever you're using doesn't offer that option, get a copy of MPEG Streamclip (it's free) and use that to convert.

« on: June 18, 2017, 04:23 »
Hmmm...  from your and ShadySue's post I am wondering if perhaps there is an issue with the Export file from ESP for some people, since DeepMeta is supposed to automatically download and process any new reports whenever you click the "Start Sync" button under the "Upload" option (admittedly a bit of an obscure place for it).

You could take a look at the export files themselves and try to see if there is any obvious problem, though in my experience they are pretty well incomprehensible.

I don't know.  If you have reason to believe DeepMeta has an issue, best contact Franky.  All I can say is it has updated as normal for me, adding in the May reports.  But Todayis20 worked for me too, so clearly there is no problem with my reports from ESP - other than their showing way lower earnings than I might have hoped, that is...

My God!!  IS; is really cashing in, best report for years!! I cant believe it!  maybe they've stolen the SS formula. 47 pages of sales!  what . has happened?

Can I ask how to read the sales from IS, I only see some chart that confused me.I don't see any "page" of sales  :-\

Or, DeepMeta

Not good for me... worst month this year, and (excepting last December) worst since 2009.

44
Good points - and that bit about ND filters is especially true, as the slowish shutter speed means you can end up using very small apertures like f22 (unless it's dark),  causing any sensor spots to become more visible, and those are hard to deal with in video unless you have professional software.

45
Sounds like you've had more training than I have!

As I said, I'm no expert - and it could well be you'd get perfectly adequate results just setting it in video mode and going for it, but I'm used to using a 5D for video and I like to be able to set everything up for myself, so I do the same thing with the OM.  Could well be the IS doesn't matter either, but generally I turn that off (if I remember) when on a tripod so same here.

Best of luck.

46
Presumably you've already Googled for settings?  If not, do that.  Yes, it is complicated...

I do have an OM-5 but I'm not an expert on using it for video (I have Canons for that), but in general, what you need is to use a shutter speed that's as close to half the frame rate as you can get, so as the OM-D will default to 29 frames/sec (maybe that's really 29.97, I'm not sure) you're looking for 1/60th of a sec.

If you use the camera in pure video mode I have no idea what setting it will select, beyond 29 frames/sec, so it's best to use either Shutter priority and set 1/60th of a sec, or Manual.  If Shutter Priority, it will try and get a sensible aperture, and you can use the exposure compensation wheel to adjust as it suits you.  If Manual, just adjust the aperture to get the exposure but keep it on 1/60th sec.  If that can't get you what you want, change the ISO, but generally you want that as low as possible, unless depth of field is vital.

You need to give any user scope to colour grade it for themselves, so set the Picture Mode to Natural or Muted, the Enhanced and Vivid modes are overprocessed for video.

It's not going to be possible to change focus during recording - at least, not in any way that will give good results as far as I know - so you're limited to setting focus first, then just recording a scene.  Or at least, that's what I do.  Perhaps someone else knows a way.

You may be able to hand hold (the IS is good) if it suits the subject, street scenes or things that are dynamic, but I would suggest it's best to start with easier stuff like static scenes with movement in the subjects - and you'll need a tripod for that, with which IS should be off in my opinion.

Then just try it out.  Mount it on the tripod, turn IS off, get it focused, set Shutter Priority and 1/60th of a sec, press the Live View button and adjust compensation till it looks right to you in the screen.  Then press the red "Record" button and get some footage.  Press it again to stop.

As for software, get a copy of MPEG Streamclip - it's free - again, Google to find it.  You can do basic editing in it to remove the shaky bits at the start and end, and various other stuff.

Then export from MPEG Streamclip as follows (my suggestion anyway, others may differ):

File/Export to Quicktime - settings:

Compression: Apple Photo - JPEG (All sites will accept this)
Quality: 90% (Don't go above 95%, the result will be a huge file for no great benefit)
Sound: No Sound  (the camera microphone is not likely to be good enough)
Frame Size: 1920x1080 (unscaled)
Turn off "Interlaced Scaling"

You can create a preset in the program so those settings can be easily retrieved.

Then click on "Make Movie" and it will make a new file... a much bigger one, unfortunately, but something you can upload.

Leastwise, that's the sort of thing I do.  Others may do it in other ways of course but it's a start!

Best of luck...  don't expect great sales though.  Pond5 is probably the best site to start with, but SS are good too.

Have fun.

Did you run the sync yet? See button on "Upload" screen.

Note it will only see images uploaded via ESP.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Where are my Stats?
« on: May 16, 2017, 03:42 »
DeepMeta 3 now includes some useful stats, calculated from the monthly files downloaded from the ESP site - something like todayis20 but all automatic, with lots of pie charts and stuff.  It will show the top 250 sales in $$s or DLs too.

Not the daily stats we'd all like but good stuff and nicely integrated.

See https://www.deepmeta.com/Downloads/.

General Stock Discussion / Re: How was your April?
« on: May 01, 2017, 09:31 »
Surprisingly, income for April was pretty good;  best for the last 12 months on iStock (though that refers to March sales of course), and overall best income since Jan 2014, including video and RM, although again those mostly came from sales in prior months.

Still 15% down on BME but that's not too bad and at least it's on the up for once.

Remains to be seen whether or not it's just a blip!
