iStockPhoto.com / Re: iStock balance
« on: March 07, 2017, 07:19 »
Does anybody know where the amount of earned money since the last payment can be found?? I searched iStock site and this new ESP-Getty-thing. No luck! Am I blind or just stupid? Thanks in advance.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

Neither blind nor stupid.  At present it just isn't available while iStock are switching systems.  They do say they will be improving things at some so far undefined date, but for now there is no way to tell until the 20th of the month when they will report earnings from the previous month - so even that will only give February earnings and your payment due, not anything earned in March.

At least, I think that's the case!

You can get a partial indication from DeepMeta 2, which doesn't work anymore for uploads but does still fetch the current balance for credit sales - except it may not be accurate!  It will also fetch the latest credit sales if you tell it to update statistics.

You can see the same figure here

http://www.istockphoto.com/gb/user_stats?Offset=0&DownloadsGraphFileType=

for February and for March up to yesterday (by floating your mouse pointer over the bar or moving to next month) but likewise, it doesn't include subs, PP or GI and may not be accurate anyway as the royalties have changed and I don't think it reflects that.

Probably best to just wait till the 20th and the next incomprehensible report...

And todayis20 has been around a while as a Getty contributor tool so not a sudden arrival or anything.  But up to you.

A contributor collecting info on other contributors' sales for an extended period of time? Why didn't I think of that?  8)

Well if they're looking to make their fortune by copying my best sellers they're going to be mightily disappointed!  ;)

I just started using the new system and not sure where everything is. I can see where royalties earnings are, but is there anywhere that shows the actual files that are selling?
Not yet we are promised this advanced facility towards the end of the month I believe.

Thanks. Was that mentioned in one of the emails from them or elsewhere in a forum post perhaps?

In the meantime, you can see the files that sold in January in a more contributor-friendly way by downloading the "txt" file from the "Export" tab, going to todayis20.com, registering there and uploading the file to it... that's about the best on offer just now!

Thanks. It sounds like what you are suggesting is downloading your personal sales data file from Getty and then uploading that information to a 3rd party site? Although it may work, I probably wouldn't do that for security reasons.

Not really a security issue, since they don't get your user account details, although if you are concerned about privacy issues it is the case that you are uploading your sales information - but the same could be said of StockPerformer.

Thanks very much! When I look at the other statement type - monthly - I only see the January results. Is it correct to say that you can export and look at all the sales that went into that total, but you can't see anything about February earnings until the 20th March?

Steve

Yes, when the February report is issued on 20th March, I would presume you can download the txt file for that, add it to the todayis20 database and it will then show the cumulative reports, or by month, as selected.

At least, I assume that's how it works!  The January report is the only one issued so far so that's all  the iStock contributors have.

Meanwhile, if you download the .txt file from the "Export" section,

Do you mean the Connect Summary text file? When I try that just now I get an "Unexpected Error..."

Steve

Another thought - don't know if they've fixed it yet but last time I downloaded it, it still contained their test rows, showing 0 gross royalty.

Consequently, if you upload it to todayis20 it will indicate more downloads than you actually have, since each row counts as a download, and the average figure it gives will be wrong too.

I imported it to Excel and deleted all the zero rows in hopes of getting something more accurate.  Worked fine.  The total royalties should still be the same (and should match what they paid you, except for anything in Connect).

I know.  It's a mess.  Just trying to help!

Well as far as I know it's been around a long time for Getty contributors, they have recently adapted it for iStock contributors too, so yes, it's safe.  Anyway, all you're doing is uploading a text file, it doesn't have access to your account or anything (I trust you don't register with the same password!).

Unfortunately though it can only interpret the lists uploaded, so as these only date from January, it can only provide data going forward, not historical sales.

If you used DeepMeta (version 2) in the past you can still access details there of course - indeed, it still seems capable of downloading data from historical sales (plus recent credit sales, although they say the royalties are not correct for those), so I suppose you could install it now even if you didn't use it to upload originally and try doing a full download.  Won't be accurate of course but still useful perhaps.

Ok thank foor you support
but the DM can i also upload the files in the older version or must that be in the new version DM??

DeepMeta 2 (the old one) can no longer be used for upload but does still fetch statistics from the old system (at least, it does for me), but only for credit sales.  It will also give you a current balance though again, that won't include subs, PP or GI sales, and may not even be accurate as I presume it was based on the old royalty system, so don't rely on it.  But at least you can see credit downloads (or some of them, I'm not sure!).

DeepMeta 3 is in development and the current version can only upload.  Useful for that but not much else.  Franky promises he will make it all singing and dancing when he can (and when Getty provide the ability for him to do so).  He has also said he hopes to have it import historical data from version 2 at some time, but that is perhaps less of a priority.

All Hail Franky I say.  He does a great job.

No, the Connect Summary is different - todayis20 uses the "txt" file, the one in the middle.  It's just a tab delimited text file and can be input to Excel if you want, but it's pretty incomprehensible on its own.

I think the Connect Summary only refers to "Connect" royalties (used to be the black line in the old stats page on iStock), but I'm not sure.  In my case it only accounts for a few cents anyway, and in fact makes up the difference between what the txt file sums to and what they actually paid me.

At the moment you can't - whether they will provide this again in the future is not clear, though they are promising improvements at some time.

Meanwhile, if you download the .txt file from the "Export" section, then go to https://www.todayis20.com/, register and upload the file, you CAN see a pretty good list showing the images, sales and other stuff.  Recommended.

Export the .txt file from ESP, go to https://www.todayis20.com/, register and upload it... and prepare to be amazed!

Well, OK, maybe not too amazed, but it's pretty good.  Try it.

General - Stock Video / Re: How much do you earn per clip a month?
« on: February 20, 2017, 11:23 »
These figures seem more in line with what I was expecting. I am not sure how you can be turning a profit with an RPI of $1/year.

The OP asked for the the RPI per month, not per year.

SpaceStockFootage obviously does very well;  my return is similar to some of the others, about $0.95 per clip per month for 2016, although I don't have a huge number of clips and the number at different sites is quite variable so that figure may not be very meaningful.

1.200.000 images of salad
2.700.000 of christmas

what surprises me is that people are still uploading images of salad or christmas...and thy still accept everything.
in my opinion there are so many niche that still needs images cause if we analyze the photos 95% are copy of copy and similar subject.

Can't find one of Santa eating salad but maybe that's a bit too niche :)

iStock has one...

You have tweaked my curiosity here, so I tried modifying a couple of scripts (originally from istock contributor theasis and Sean Locke) in an attempt to do it...  you can get it from here:

MP Resize

Either right click and "Save link as..." or left click and copy and paste to a text file, then save as a ".jsx".

Put it in the Photoshop program directory under "Presets\Scripts" and it should become visible on the File/Scripts menu.

When run, it will display the size of the active image width and height in pixels, along with an approximate megapixel size (width x height).  You can enter a new megapixel size and it will display the approximate dimensions that would result, then when you're happy you can tell it to go ahead and resize the image if you want.  The result may not be exactly the size predicted (rounding errors I presume) but it should be close.

Caveat: I'm not a JavaScript programmer so I don't vouch for either the quality or the functionality.  It seems to work but use at your own risk!

I don't report anything because I noticed that my vote don't show up in the poll... Same number of vote and same rating before or after I vote... >_>

I think it takes a while for the poll figures to update with the latest votes, it doesn't happen immediately.

I am given to understand that qHero - a 3rd party iStock upload tool (I don't have a link handy but I'm sure you can find it) - keeps a copy of the files you upload, so in an emergency you could get them back.

Personally, though, I have privacy concerns about that and I prefer to keep my own backups;  but I can see that it's a good selling point.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Upload Method?
« on: July 25, 2016, 09:50 »
I personally prefer to upload directly, but I believe DM will come into its own if you send releases. There's also the QTOOLS this that Yuri brought out, but I haven't looked at it. I really don't have any problems uploading directly providing upload is working. Ha, but sometimes after doing all the keywording etc you get logged out when you try to complete the upload; which is just ridiculous and a real PITA.

Thanks for mentioning us, even though I name is qHero  :) You should try qHero out - the only risk is to get better narrative content, in less time while getting a free cloud-based backup of your files.

/Kasper.

Haven't looked at qHero yet, although I was meaning to sometime... but, you are keeping copies of our files?  What's that about?  I'm not sure I'd be happy with that.

Same here, around a month +/- few days. I also sent them a message about picture that has been stuck for about three weeks in publishing and all they answered me is to "have patience".

Should I start uploading pictures for 2017/2018 new year now?

As I say, if it's stuck in publishing, try opening it for edit on the site, change something and save it back;  then give it a few minutes and you may find it becomes active.  Worked for me and for others.

iStock may well get around to sorting it themselves eventually, but don't hold your breath...

Hi I saw in your sig that you are exclusive with IS. Could you share any info on your earnings with them?

Sorry, my earnings are between me and the Inland Revenue...

Do they actually say "Pending" on the site or do they say "This file is Publishing"?

There was a time a few weeks back where files were being accepted but then got stuck - it was found they could be unstuck by opening them on site, then saving again.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Income lose 2013 to 2016
« on: June 14, 2016, 06:20 »
Yes, the figures given by Michael are roughly in line with mine - I'm exclusive at 35%, and in 2015 my RPD for credit sales only (not including ELs, Subs, PP or GI) was $8.68, while my overall RPD including everything was $3.89.

In 2013, the corresponding figures were $9.52 and $6.11.

Total DLs have increased in that time, but only from Subs, not from credit sales, which are down; hence the drop in the overall RPD.

73
Now that we have had 93 votes on this poll, we have 20 independents saying their income hasn't gone down at all since 2012 and yet only 3 exclusives who say there income hasn't gone down over the same period of time.

For me, this is one of the most important aspects of the poll results so far. Yes, as many people have pointed out, there might be some discrepancies, inconsistencies, and inaccuracies on how the various contributors who voted have calculated their percentage of drops. But I think the issue of whether or not you have had a drop since 2012 in income or not is a pretty cut and dry matter.
....
Not really. There's a minimum sales threshold to reach to become exclusive on IS. The people who's income has increased are the ones who had very small portfolios in 2012, in other words much more likely to be independents.

Yes, statistically these polls have all sorts of caveats - they're from a self-selected group, the answers are unverifiable, they aren't corrected for increases in the numbers of contributors and images, size of portfolio, level of expertise or activity and no doubt lots of other things.

They're fun, but I wouldn't go drawing any far reaching conclusions based on them... if you are thinking of dropping exclusivity (or indeed going exclusive), base it on your own figures and aims, not what anyone else might think is best!

All agreed. But when I put up this poll I had some theories as to why my own income on iStock has dropped so significantly. Yes, the poll results may be flawed for all the reasons you mentioned, but so far the poll results have matched my theories. Pure coincidence? Maybe, maybe not.

The poll, assuming it's at all accurate (and it doesn't seem outrageously out of order or anything) doesn't confirm any theories as to the causes of income drops - it just confirms that, for many people, there has been an income drop.  I think most contributors (based on posts in this forum and others) already knew that!

It's just a bit of fun.

By the way, I should have added the basis for calculating your drop. In my case I took my BME, which was actually March 2012 and compared it to what my checkout payment amount will be later this month for May.
Oh, if I compared my BME to any month this year, my drop would be much more than I voted. I compared 2015's total to 2012's total.

Very sorry for not clarifying that earlier. I should have laid down the parameters at the onset. Anyway, thank you for voting. Your vote will still help.

I did it ShadySue's way too - and actually, I think that makes more sense.  I find any individual month on iStock can vary by as much as 100%, so just choosing a particular month doesn't really tell us very much.

Also, by way of comparison, it would be interesting to know how independents have fared overall, not just on iStock - judging from other posts, the whole market for individual contributors has declined over the years, presumably because of the huge increase in numbers of images, so just looking at one agency doesn't give us the full picture.

This is accurate for me. Last month I made around $600 on IS but the prior month was $340.

When you include your iStock totals, are you adding in subs and PP?  I have been. If I was to only go by blue line DLs then I've gone from 4-5k/month  to only around $ 300/month on IS.  Which would put IS on the lowest tier for me.

Yes, I included total income from all iStock sources.  But I'm not a major player, so a couple of ELs or good GI sales can make a lot of difference to a month.
