By the way, I should have added the basis for calculating your drop. In my case I took my BME, which was actually March 2012 and compared it to what my checkout payment amount will be later this month for May.
Oh, if I compared my BME to any month this year, my drop would be much more than I voted. I compared 2015's total to 2012's total.

Very sorry for not clarifying that earlier. I should have laid down the parameters at the onset. Anyway, thank you for voting. Your vote will still help.

I did it ShadySue's way too - and actually, I think that makes more sense.  I find any individual month on iStock can vary by as much as 100%, so just choosing a particular month doesn't really tell us very much.

Also, by way of comparison, it would be interesting to know how independents have fared overall, not just on iStock - judging from other posts, the whole market for individual contributors has declined over the years, presumably because of the huge increase in numbers of images, so just looking at one agency doesn't give us the full picture.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: iStock Down?
« on: April 26, 2016, 06:16 »
Not my experience - yes, total sales are down over what they were a few years back, by maybe 25%, though I've made that up from other sources, but April will be a BMY (although admittedly not on a very good year so far), March was a subs BME (by a small amount), PP is much as it ever was (not a lot) and GI for March was poor but then it always varies wildly so I'm not despairing on that.

But this is all OT.  The site isn't down.

Like everything in the poll, we don't know enough to be able to deduce anything. I do know that an msg member was over there persuading people to poll their Alamy scores here. I wouldn't be surprised if people are posting their gross sales figures, as that's what generally happens on Alamy. Also we have no idea what size their ports are. Some, but not all, of those who have already reported good months there have ports of over 10k or over 20K.
I'll just say that with a 4:3 port size of different images on iS and Alamy, iS, even with the huge fall from previous years, made me almost 3.5x more than Alamy in March, credit sales alone, with subs etc still to come in.
I'm torn between polling my iS or my Alamy amount, as I can't poll both.

I have roughly similar results as you do - but bear in mind your Alamy images are all RM, as are mine (at least, I assume they are); those with RF images may be doing better.

That said, I too find it hard to credit the figures shown in the poll results as being a realistic comparison.

How are people filling this in when February PP sales from IS are still not in?

For myself, I always just use the amount earned during the month, regardless of which month the downloads occurred - so my February amount is based on PP, GI and Subs from January + credit sales in February.

I find it easier that way - otherwise I'd have to wait until the end of the month before I could submit, and it would only be visible a few days.

@Leaf - is it possible to display the numbers of Exclusives submitting too?

I don't think it's easy - that's why I keep mine very simple.

I averaged about $1/clip/month during 2015.  Which I was quite pleased with, given how simple mine are.

What is approximate lifetime on sites of the clips sold in 2015?

Do you mean how long did it take before they sold?

I don't think I can answer that, I don't keep records that detailed;  but I started uploading video towards the end of 2011, and on average I've only uploaded a couple per month - I don't do a lot.

Of the more recently uploaded, I see it taking 6 - 9 months before any sold - in fact only 5 of those uploaded in 2015 have sold so far, but some of the older ones sold multiple times during the year.  As with photos, if they happen to catch on, they can do quite well.  It's a long game, you don't get quick returns, but in my case at least it has just about made up for the decline in photo sales over the same period.

And it's fun...  don't forget to enjoy it...

Photos is still way easier to make money for me than footage

Oh yes, it is for me too - but I was responding to the OP - you have the equipment, you're out there anyway, why not shoot some clips and see how it goes - what's to lose?

I have some 200+ simple clips against some 3000+ images, and for 2015 I find the clips have made about 20% of my total income from stock.  It won't last of course - as has been pointed out, the video market will become over supplied the same as the images one is;  so best get in soonest!

84
Video is now over supplied and not worth it. Concentrate on trying to find better niches in photography.

Well, I suppose it depends on your expectations, but I have a very small video portfolio (about 200) of very basic clips and I've sold 4 on SS already this month.

Seems well worth it to me...

General Stock Discussion / Re: Anyone notice sales picking up??
« on: January 15, 2016, 14:28 »
Regular image sales poor, though I've had one EL on IS and 7 video clips sold on SS, which is pretty good for me.

But poor sales are to be expected the first couple of weeks of the year, in my experience anyway.  Give it time.

86
I keep a separate business bank account and PayPal account solely for MicroStock, and all payments go through those;  for major purchases, I keep receipts so I can offset against income.  I don't really bother for small expenses.

I am registered with HMRC (the UK equivalent of the IRS) as self employed (sole trader) and just do a self assessment form.  My gross earnings aren't large so I am not required to do detailed returns, and I am retired so my tax affairs are relatively simple.

87
Actually, iStock did say they were relaxing those conditions to some degree, even for logos;  see

Can only speak for footage myself, and a relatively small portfolio, but it's been good:

Portfolio  +20%
Earnings  +161%

That, plus other video sites and RM. almost make up for the decline on iStock...

Can't say I'm surprised - as I say, they are very touchy about locales!

They would probably accept such pictures taken in the open at public locations, if you have any, and that might be worthwhile.  Otherwise, another agency might be more accepting, or if you're Exclusive with iStock, you can still offer them elsewhere as RM.

Nobody else seems to have replied so I'll give it a go...

There is no ftp upload for images to iStock, but you can use DeepMeta - indeed, that really is the best way in any case.  That way you can copy and paste between similars and it will check at least the format for editorial uploads, which is critical on iS.

No, you can't change already uploaded ones to Editorial only; they will have to be re-uploaded.  If you have a lot, use DeepMeta again - you can use its copy/paste facility to copy at least the keywords and stuff from the old ones to the new ones before adding the editorial caption.

I'm not sure how accepting they are of political candidate pictures - try one or two to start with and test the water.  They are very touchy about locales, yes;  I don't know if press credentials would be accepted.  Best try support for that, or the Getty forum.

Best of luck....

I have a little more than 200 clips on each of SS and P5, about 100 on iS (stopped submitting there) and a few on VB recently (just started there, no sales yet).  All very basic.

During 2015, I seem to have averaged somewhat more than $200/month overall;  it's been about $1.20/clip/month across all sites, though most income is from SS and P5.

Based on that, I'd guess you'd need about 500 clips on those two sites at least to make $500/month.

But my stuff is very simple and not the kind of thing to be in much demand, you could do much better.

Nice observation....
Let's hear from others but it seems a pattern is forming :)
It seems for an average contributor, (without any insanely popular clips and if clips are posted on the 3 sites)
Number of Clips ===is approximately equal=== to monthly Income

Of course, there is a law of diminishing returns... if you have 250 clips and make $250/month, say, then you add another 250 clips of similar subjects, it's not likely that your income will double.  You have to have variety too.

Here's a link to the original thread:

ETA: Mine's just come back!  Still at zero though...

There is a little green dial below my name, it used to be right round to the, err, right, now it appears to have gone the other way. I have no idea what it shows but I am doing far less well at it now than I used to , apparently, whatever it is. :-\

It relates to the size of your portfolio on iStock, and thus is supposed to give a guide as to your level of expertise/experience, though that is somewhat moot.

I suspect however that the iStock UI changes have probably broken it.  No doubt Leaf will fix it in due course...

ETA: At least, that's what I thought it was - but I don't seem to have one either... and I'm sure I used to...

95
Has the "My Uploads" page changed then?  Still the same on my browser...

Or is this something new being rolled out selectively?

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Sale missing in "My uploads"
« on: September 21, 2015, 14:06 »
Has it perhaps sold again since?

The "My Uploads" view only displays the last sale.  You can use the scripts (by theasis) to see more, if you're using Chrome.

General Stock Discussion / Re: lost partition recovery
« on: September 18, 2015, 02:51 »
If the problem is due to a disk read error in the partition table, you could try Steve Gibson's SpinRite - see https://www.grc.com/sr/spinrite.htm - I used it a lot in my previous incarnation as IT Support.

I'm not sure though how well it works with SSDs, never used it for them myself, but it has been reported as fixing faults with them too.

There's a thread on the Shutterstock forum about it.  They are looking into it.

« on: August 10, 2015, 08:21 »
Does anybody know where I can see my G.I. sales? I had one at the end of July but can not see it at PP. As I know this is the place it should show... I'd really love to see which is the file.
Thanks!

If you use the Chrome script from contributor theasis (see here), you could try looking at your latest sales ordered by royalty, say, and have it display the total sales as well as the iS sales;  you may have to scroll a few pages but a difference of $104 is quite a lot so you should be able to spot it pretty quick.

ETA: Sorry, that was the wrong link.  Try again, fixed it now.
