The Picture Buyers Fair in London had a buyer panel and podcast.

I normally don't sit through anything for an hour but hearing image buyers talk about how they think was enlightening.

The small panel probably doesn't represent buyer thinking as a whole but they bring up some topics that will confirm and also contradict a lot of the people's views here about what helps and hurts contributors. Here are some nuggets from the buyers:

- Same images on multiple websites at different price points devalues photography
- Buyers aren't driving prices down, flood of contributor images allows more negotiation (what???, isn't part of negotiation driving prices down?)

And this one was really good. A photographer told them they were contradicting themselves that they want higher quality images but are forcing prices down. One buyer responded they are worried about this because:

- There will come a point when publishers drive prices down too far which will push smaller agencies out of business. Supply and pricing will then be controlled by handful of larger agencies who will force prices back up and then the publishers will be at a disadvantage.

Photoshelter just announced some pretty significant changes.

Now even basic accounts will have the custom website functionality with less PS branding.

And they fixed a few SEO issues that I brought up before including a different URL structure, image-level sitemaps, and automated sitemap submission. If they implemented these changes correctly so they're Google-friendly there's potential for good traffic.

I have a few hundred images I was going to submit to agencies but am now considering using PS to test direct sales.

So we're back to the direct sales question. Is anybody having any success selling direct?

If you have a PS account here's more detail http://www.photoshelter.com/mem/home/help/tut/index/june2010
We're just about to wrap up a major site upgrade, and you're getting some special treatment.
On June 10, 2010 all PhotoShelter Basic and Starter members will get a single customizable photography website -- our new Maui theme. Like the 9 themes available to PhotoShelter's Standard & Pro Accounts, you will have full control to display image galleries, select image sizes, add logos, and so much more. You'll have a complete standalone photography website perfectly suited to grow your business, outfitted with all of PhotoShelter's powerful tools for marketing, e-commerce, and client management. With this change, we will be removing the legacy PhotoShelter-branded display pages, in favor of your new website theme. (So, starting June 10 your visitors will experience your new look, and your brand will lead instead of PhotoShelter's.)

We'll also be announcing a series of additional upgrades. We're saving the juicy details, but these include:
Simplified website setup, customization, and management
Structural changes to help search engines find more of your images
Shorter URL structure that places your branding ahead of PhotoShelter
Simpler image gallery management with a streamlined user interface

General Photography Discussion / To Shoot or Not To Shoot
« on: February 18, 2010, 07:06 »
I've been struggling with this and just saw Chase Jarvis blogged on it.

http://blog.chasejarvis.com/blog/2010/02/to-shoot-or-not-to-shoot.html

If you come accross an accident, injured person, or other sensitive situation do you shoot it or not?

I take my camera everywhere. But I've never felt right about shooting personal misfortune.

Image Sleuth / Real Estate Agent Stole one of my Flickr Images
« on: December 15, 2009, 21:20 »
Stinkin bastages.

This is why I avoided Flickr for a long time. There's no mistaking he stole it because security is set to give the spaceball.gif so it's a screenshot or something.

Anybody ever have to deal with this? What have you done about it?

Plus some designer just hit me up for using an image in return for "a nice placement of my name on the new site". Yippie. I responded with a quote.

EDIT: The stolen image is on his business website.

General Stock Discussion / A Photo Credit Doesnt Pay the Rent

Computer Hardware / Windows Home Server?
« on: August 27, 2009, 21:49 »
Anybody using it or have one of these types of hardware servers?

http://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-AH340-UA230N-Home-Server/dp/B001WGX15W/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1251427632&sr=8-2

Looks pretty slick but I'm wondering how well the backup works versus just buying more external drives.

General Stock Discussion / If you had six months...
« on: July 21, 2009, 19:54 »
of total free time to shoot, process, and upload, how many images do you think you could create?

Some of you probably already have that free time but what if you could take a six month break from your day job?

Interesting that Google made $1.42 in profits last quarter but they refuse to pay for artwork for their products.

Seems like it's okay for them to give everybody's else stuff away for free but not their advertising and other products.

I think I'll try some other search engines.

EDIT: Whoops. That's $1.42 Billion in profits.

Software - General / RAW converter software for 5D MarkII?

My 5D Mark II just showed up and I'm looking for alternatives to Adobe Camera Raw and Canon Digital Photo Pro. Any suggestions?

Has anybody used any of these online training sites like kelbytraining.com or lynda.com for photoshop?

Video Equipment / Sofware / Technique / D700x
« on: January 09, 2009, 23:33 »
Talks are starting to heat up on some other forums speculating a D700x 24MP full frame will be out in late 2009. A bit late to the party but that's fine.

Some people are guessing it'll be around $3,000 US but some other stats are saying around $4,500.

I like my D300 but I don't like what I'm seeing with where Nikon is going. I highly doubt Nikon would release a D700x at $3,000 unless it replaces the D700. And would a D3X really be worth $5,000 more? And if it is $4,500 why would anybody spend the extra $2,000 over a $2,600 5D MarkII?

I hate to say it but unless Nikon does some crazy stuff with pricing and caniblaizes half of its DSLRs it looks like the best upgrade path from a D300 is a 5D MarkII.

Anybody else thinking this?

General Stock Discussion / Meet 2008 goals? What are 2009 goals?

So how did you do with your 2008 goals and what are they for 2009?

Software - General / Photoshop Elements 7 worth the upgrade?
« on: November 28, 2008, 11:48 »
I have PSE 5 and it works fine for my needs. Costco has the full version of PSE 7 for $50. I downloaded the PSE 7 trial and I'm not seeing any new useful stuff related to doing stock. $50 isn't worth getting a different color.

Anybody found anything in PSE 7 that would want to make me upgrade?

I'm putting together my own personal RM site and I'm trying to figure out if I should add an automated RM calculator/e-commerce system or just do a gallery where I give each buyer a quote.

Do buyers actually use those Rights Managed calculators correctly or just fudge the numbers to get the best price? If you have your own site to sell images how do you handle quotes, orders, invoices, etc?

General Stock Discussion / Are you LLC, LLP, Sole Proprietor, etc?
« on: November 19, 2008, 13:34 »
I was going to do a poll on this but there are a gazillion different business types worldwide.

I'm curious about this because this hobby is turning into a business and I want to separate business and personal. Really don't want my personal assets ruined from some business problem or lawsuit.

Any of you filed as a business and which classification?

96
Just noticed a pattern.

Several of my better selling files literally went from the front of my portfolio to the last page.

At initial glance any files that have a view/download ratio better than 10:1 get penalized. Some examples of files that have been moved to dead last:

- 143 views / 22 downloads
- 5375 views / 777 downloads
- 165 views / 23 downloads
- 348 views /51 downloads

And now the files that are still at the front of my portfolio:

- 542 views / 24 downloads
- 359 views / 20 downloads
- 608 views / 29 downloads
- 729 views / 45 downloads

Seems to give preference to files with a 10:1 - 20:1 ratio. Anything better gets heavily penalized. Anything worse just doesn't get preference.

Why the heck would they penalize files that get high downloads to views? Isn't a high view/dl ratio an indication that buyers feel it's a very good image?

Anybody else seeing this trend in their portfolios?

iStockPhoto.com / The New best match and the 80/20 Rule
« on: November 05, 2008, 21:31 »
I'm starting to see signs this best match change was based on the 80/20 rule. Meaning 20% of their contributors make up 80% of their revenue. Some of the top contributors were complaining of no revenue growth even though they were uploading hundreds or thousands of files yearly.

Jim Pickerell posted this at http://www.jimpickerell.com/articles2/admin-article-view.asp?id=2022

"Since the beginning of 2005 it is likely that iStock has had more than 52 million downloads. (Relatively accurate numbers are available for 2006 and 2007 when Getty Images was public and providing quarterly figures. The numbers for 2005 and 2008 are extrapolations.) These 267 [Diamond] photographers are responsible for Over 18.2 million of the 52 million downloads were of images belonging to these 267 photographers. "

If that's accurate than less than 2% of their contributors account for 37% of their downloads (and possibly revenue). That's pretty amazing. So maybe a very small percentage of contributors (less than 10%?) are responsible for 90% of their revenue.

Seems like most of the big guns have been happier with this new best match. So since you can't make everybody happy wouldn't it make sense to shift the best match toward making the top performers more happy?

I googled my name to try and find something and came accross my images still up at Photoshelter. You can still quote the image but it asks you to log in when you try to add it to the cart. They look like they're still for sale.

Oddly I just tried the psc.photoshelter.com login and it works again so I'm going to try to delete mine.

Shouldn't these pages have been taken down already?

iStockPhoto.com / Submitting RM While Exclusive at IS
« on: November 04, 2008, 05:37 »
Anybody know what the rules are with this? I haven't seen anything on IS that makes it clear on what you can or can't submit elsewhere as RM like at Alamy.

Can you use the same model but at a different shoot or do they need to be completely different models? Can you use similar subjects (isolated business phone vs isolated cellphone) or do they need to be completely different?

Visionary stuff. Looks promising.
