You'll have a difficult time attracting any contributors that have saleable images at .50 cents commission. You would need to have massive traffic levels to generate enough earnings to get contributors interested. Even then, you'll still have people balking at .50. From what I've seen so far I doubt you have any plan for how to attract buyers.

I'll pass. I'm already shedding underperforming sites.

I can clearly see most of the problems that have already been mentioned. If you can't see them, maybe one of the problems is your monitor.

So when you go over the traffic limit their incentive is to shut your site down? Unless there's a real good reason to stick with them, I would switch hosts. Thanks for keeping this site going.

Subs are at 37% and increasing quickly. Oddly, January was the first month I started getting subs. Overall, my downloads are up but earnings are up and down. I'm not seeing a pattern of growth there.

You're posing two different thoughts/questions here.

I think it should be obvious that a good camera doesn't automatically make a good photographer. But a bad camera can make a good photographer produce images with poor/unacceptable technical quality.

Can you do a good job with normal equipment? What's "normal" and "good job" to you? Even the most basic DSLR should produce moderately acceptable images. If a Point & Shoot is normal for you, then no I don't think it's good enough. You might get by with a P&S but it will be a long frustrating experience.

Viewsonic 19" Widescreen LCD. The difference in between my 20" NEC CRT and the Viewsonic are night and day. The LCD is awesome.

Photoshop Discussion / Re: Some banding problem?

I ran into this when I created an artificial sky. I ended up just reducing the variance between the two gradiant colors and that worked.

Waldo, your response implies I'm discrediting or downplaying the skills of new contributors, which I'm not. I'm sure there are a ton of talented new contributors.

I've seen evidence that many new contributors "give it a try". When they find out it can become a second 40 hour full time job that constantly rejects their best work plus earns them next to nothing for the first few months, they give up.

It is what it is. I believe a high percentage of microstock newbies, both new and seasoned photographers, give up after they see the enormous level of effort and initial low return. It's pretty clear the people who have the right skills plus commitment are getting somewhere with this.

I'd love to see some stats from each of the sites what percentage of user accounts that are older than six months and have less than 25 or 50 images.

To reduce the banding switch to using AbobeRGB, shoot RAW/NEF, and convert it in Photoshop with Adobe Camera Raw. That should preserve more of the color space. As far as I know the .jpg file format is only 8-bit so you really don't have a choice.

Is this from your D300?

Sony announces 24mp flagship DSLR, full frame, available this Autumn.....

Yikes... The sleeping giant is awake. This looks like they're out for the kill and that this won't be a community sensor. So no 24MP D3X. A 24MP full frame is pretty compelling. And given their aggressive pricing this could really hit Canon and Nikon hard.

General - Top Sites / Re: January 2008 earnings breakdown
« on: January 31, 2008, 20:24 »
IS   51% (BME, Up over triple from Dec)
SS   33% (BME, Up almost double due to EL)
FT   7% (BME, Up by 25%)
DT   4% (Down by over half)
StockXpert   2% (BME, Up almost double)
BigStock   1% (Down by half)
123RF   1% (Up by 50%)
SV   2% (Up by Double)
LO   <1% (Dying)
AB   0% (Dead)
FP   0% (Dead)

Jan 08 is BME by almost double driven mostly by Istock. Istock is absolutely rocking. SS is doing very well. FT is growing slowly. StockXpert is finally waking up. The rest I'm beginning to wonder if it's worth my time uploading to anymore.

EDIT: A couple of late corrections after more sales

Adobe Stock / Re: Fotolia tightening up standards a bit?
« on: January 31, 2008, 08:53 »
In last 3 days I had:

154 uploaded, 151 accepted, 3 rejected. Hm...

it is not Fotolia, it is your photos, I guess.
This remark comes across as elitist. Did you intend it to sound this way?

The reason I started this topic is because I've had close to a very high acceptance rate (90-100%?) at Fotolia over the past several months. Fotolia is my third highest earner of 11 sites and I like them.

However, a few weeks ago, I started getting random high rejections (50%+) on certain batches. Mostly for "similar images". While the images may have been similar in subject, they were not just a slight different angle of the same subject. They were two completely different scenes with similar objects.

Since the rejections seemed inconsistent from batch to batch my guess is they have a new reviewer.

Lighting / Re: Continuous or strobe lighting?

I live in Switzerland and have never seen Alien Bees advertised or on sale. Are they a US product?

For a starter lighting kit I bought the Elincrom D-lite 4. Two flash heads adjustable in 1/10 stop increments (who uses it that fine?) with softboxes and all the gear, packing neatly into 2 cases. If you're in Europe I'd recommend this kit.

Yes, a US product http://www.alienbees.com/. I'll check out the Elincroms, thanks.

Lighting / Continuous or strobe lighting?
« on: January 30, 2008, 21:48 »
I'm building up my studio and need to add some lighting. I already have an setup for isolations but need something for object scenes (e.g. laptop on desk) and eventually for people.

I'm undecided on a strobe or continuous setup but am leaning toward an Alien Bees B800. And if it should be a softbox or umbrella. Or a combination of these.

What has worked well for you?

2795
Denis - you're in a tough spot. You're probably going to have a hard time making money with that Mintolta. I'm not sure what it's worth but could you sell or trade it and take that money to get a used DSLR? Like the others said, a Canon 10D is about $200-$250. Not cheap but it would open the door for you to start making some money. Gotta spend it to make it.  ;)

In addition to your approval rating, I'm guessing your DT forum activity influences your search engine ranking. They seem to have a pretty compex algorythm that they tweak constantly. My downloads go in cycles there. I get a couple of weeks of daily downloads and then a couple of weeks of nothing.

what?! Is this about making money or your love and ability to create images?

They said this would happen, everything good in my life would soon be capitalized on, and made commercial.
(I just recently found out that the tooth Fairy were my parents. I'm devastated)

Be well, and make a lot of money if that's what floats your boat,

For me it's both. But I applaud you that you're in this purely for the love of it. Which of the sites are you giving all of your work away at?

I must be missing something here. Nikon seems to have played this whole camera release game masterfully with the D300 and D3.

I just saw the official D60 press release. Uhhhhh, it's a freakin D40x with a couple of new features, one of which is the new D60 badge.

I really hope they have something else up their sleeve than this.

Well it looks like a Nikon D60, 10.2mp with knobs and whistles is coming....

I'd like a D3 junior, but I think that won't be launched until next year.

Well, I hope they have something else coming out because that would be a pretty big gap between a D60 and D300.

Wierd... Canon seems to have made the 40D and 450D too close in specs and Nikon may be leaving a big gaping hole.

I still think a D90 would be a good idea.
