General Stock Discussion / POLL: What brand DSLR do you use?
« on: December 03, 2007, 08:32 »
I'm starting to get a wandering eye for camera brands. The grass always looks greener...

What brand DSLR do you use primarily for shooting stock? If you use multiple brands equally then choose "Use Multiple Brands".

For the brands that you own or use, comments are welcome on brand likes/dislikes. If you use multiple brands, which do you like better for stock and why? Please don't give opinions about brands that you don't own or haven't extensively used.

Shutterstock first, then Istock, then everybody else. SS and IS are my highest earners. The rest are a distant second.

Up 100% this month mostly from SS & IS.

Hatman - must have come across the wrong way. I like the nicknames.

General Stock Discussion / Re: November Earnings Breakdown
« on: December 01, 2007, 14:12 »
BME overall. Total earnings doubled from Nov mostly due to IS & SS. IS has been impressive. SS rocked. BigStock dropped in half. DT was doing nicely with downloads daily and then downloads literally stopped in Nov. SV surprised with some downloads. StockXpert was really disappointing. Albumo is a ghostown.

Given that SS, IS and FT made over 80% of my earnings I'm beginning to think the effort vs return for the rest of these sites is a waste of time.

SS   44.12% (1st month)
IS   30.15% (+50%, BME)
FT   8.39% (BME)
SV   5.54% (BME)
123RF   4.07% (downloads up, $$$ down)
BigStock   3.47%
DT   2.31%
LO   1.39%
StockXpert   0.58%
AB   0.00%

EDIT: Looking back at some of the numbers, what the heck happened with DT? Seems like it has either dropped like a rock or become a low earner for a lot of people.

Hey Hatman, I wonder if we'll ever see new companies popping up using some of your nicknames for Snapvillage? Slappertown? Crapvillage?

SV is slow but moving for me. Some sales but toward the bottom.

It's low but improving for me.  Has almost caught up with BigStock and DT and passed LO, SV, and StockXpert in earnings.

Nope, not working. Do a search and it says:

"Sorry, we experienced a technical difficulty while trying to perform your search, please try again.
If the troubles persist after several tries, please alert us by telling us what you tried to search for on our Contact Page >> - thank you very much."

« on: November 27, 2007, 18:52 »
they have a very nice interface, they are friendly, but with 290 images online and no sales,
i am beginning to have doubts in their future. How others are doing at LO?

vphoto

I've had a few sales and like the site. The design should attract designers who tend to like creativity and visuals more than simply functional logic and generic design.

Attracting photographers, technical infrastructure, and measuring traffic seem to be their short term concerns. I'm curious to know what the end goal for LO is. Become one of the Biggies (Big 6?)? Become a midstock site? Grow image library and get acquired?

Hmmm. 50 images online and up until a week ago I was getting DL's almost daily. Nothing in over a week.

Well, if that's the way the search works then shouldn't a new submitter like me get a surge of downloads and then taper off? I don't even have a subscription download.

My portfolio is small and may not be superstar quality (yet) but I would think it should generate something here. Or maybe my portfolio isn't a match for StockXpert. Is StockXpert known for good and poor sales with certain categories of images? (People, sports, etc)

Interesting stuff.  Just seems like it may take a bit for sales to kick in.

Thought it was odd that StockXpert seems to be a mid to top-level earner for most people and I've had nothing in over a month.  My first day at SS I had double-digit downloads and I even had a couple of downloads at LO and SV within a couple of weeks.

Thanks!

Several sites have free sections. Does this help drive exposure and sales or just distract/deter buyers from buying? Discuss.

StockXpert.com / StockXpert, something wrong here?
« on: November 09, 2007, 21:51 »
About a month and a half ago I uploaded 30 images to StockXpert. I have a lot of views and zero downloads. Seems kind of strange that I'm getting downloads everywhere (IS, BigStock, 123RF, SS, DT, FT, LO and even Snapvillage) and nothing at StockXpert. Is this normal?

Tom, could it be that now that they've increased levels you have so darn many level 3 4 and 5 that the designers can't afford you anymore?? ;D

Seriously now, at DT I have 2 weeks of awesome sales followed by 2 weeks wondering if my collection has vanished.  But at the end of the month, totals are pretty consistent.  Slightly higher if I upload a few more.

Same thing with me. Was building momentum nicely and just stopped dead about a week ago.

The company I'm at now is a 5-10 minute commute. Last company I was commuting 1 to 1-1/2 hours each way to go only 18 miles. Make a big difference on quality of life.
