I wonder if I should notify all the sites that he appears on? He's only using my stuff on StockXpert & Shutterstock. Waste of time? Would they even care?

Shutterstock is known to be very rigid about it.  I'm almost sure they take action on him even probably erase his portfolio

Racephoto, true those are factors that taken into account too.  And you forgot the acceptance ratio  ;)

Well, hello?  That's the point.  To be treated differently.  If you were treated the same, there wouldn't be a difference.

yes of course, but what I really mean is 'being treated beyond the point of fairness'

But it will always be a game of yes or no.

@ getalife whatalife :  ( ;) sorry, couldn't help it  ;D )

the exclusives aren't the problem.  They are just people like we are who just made a different choice.

The 'problem' (if we can call it that way) is that IS treats non-exclusives very different then exclusives.  And this is what some people don't accept.

This is an easy way for 'killing' spammers.  Their images will have many views (because they show up in many searches), but few DL (because no one like their image)

My mistake in thinking about exclusivity and trying to understand people's reasoning for choosing to be exclusive was that I assumed that most people factored profitability into the decision. This is, afterall, a hobby for many contributors, and making the most money possible is not always a priority

you didn't make ANY mistake.  money IS the reason why people choose to go exclusive.  If not, they could go exclusive at DT which has a much easier upload system and give you 50% royalties.

So why IS ??  because they make money at IS !! point, other line

LOL Come on i can point you out thousands of clear copies at istockphoto and no-one of these members got banned because of this. Actually one of the greatest copycat of all is the famous Lise Gagne and i don't see her get banned either so relax!

concepts aren't , so there is no chance of being banned.  sane with vectors, but you have to draw them completely by yourself.

Perrush, I agree with you, although I think you cannot make best match position dependent on a dl to view ratio at all.

not alone, but it's one of the factors that counts

60
Nice.

come on, don't stick your head in the sand.  Do you tell no exclusives are copying non-exclusives ? Do you think non-exclusives are handled fairly at IS ?

if not ?  why wouldn't we take advantage of your weakness (not being able to upload to other sites) ?

I am confused. If I had your calibre as a stock photographer.
I would not put up with all this crappola, and pull out every single one of my images from IStock.
That would be devastating to Istock, Getty or no Getty.

600+ DL / day is what is preventing him to do so.

Actually we should all (non-exclusives) pull are entire portfolios.  I'm sure IS wouldn't like that.  But why aren't we doing that ?? -> $$$$$$

62
exclusivity in a microstock environment doesn't make sense.  Images are so easy the reproduce, it's just a matter of time before all IS images are also available at other agencies.

my tip : see what sells well by IS exclusives and isn't found on other sites in large numbers  -> then begin shooting  ;D  Don't think you're a thief. I've several examples of exclusives doing the same to non-exclusive images and then outrunning them because they are exclusive.  So go and get them  ;D

I'm not complaining given that I didn't upload anything for 1 year.
This is a graph excluding referrals.  Mind that the total is divided by 2 to fit the graph.

@ freezing :

20 views/dl is worse than 12 views/dl

it means that for each 20 people who looked, one DL'ed the file.  Hence found it a good one.  While in my case for every 12 people who looked bought it.  So my image is seen as a better one by the buyers because as a % more of them bought it.

This is an easy way for 'killing' spammers.  Their images will have many views (because they show up in many searches), but few DL (because no one like their image).  So the algorithm pushes them back.

I'm almost sure DT uses this methode.  And it makes sense. What IS does, doesn't make sense and in the long run it will hurt them.  I'm sure for that.

Why ? Because many microstock images are so easy to reproduce.  It's just a matter of time before all the good selling images of exclusive on IS are copied and can be found on other microsite too.

hi all,

first of all let me say that I'm not telling that my image is better then the other.  It's not in many ways.  This is not the point of my comparison.

I'm only showing / wondering why I'm so far in the best match search even if I narrow the keywords so that they match my image almost perfectly.

If I leave the 'pink' out and search for 'red rose isolated', I even can't find my image  ;D

That said, newbies need to be aware that this is one reason why they don't get many downloads.   I'm lucky I've already 300 DL on that image so it show up as one of the first of the non-exclusives.

Also it's hard to compare yourself with someone who has quite a lot more downloads than you.

first thing you need to ask yourself is why did she get that amount of downloads ?  Is it a coincidence that my downloads/month dropped from 40 to <10 just at the time she uploaded that file ?

Just look at lilliboas portfolio.  She had more downloads the past 300 days than Yuri.  This makes here the top contributor on IS !!  Whit that portfolio ????  come on !!

Quote
I would have to say that I actually like the image from Liliboas better because the colors are more "colorful" and saturated.

you mean oversaturated and blown out in some channels ??  ;)  I still wonder why buyer keep preferring such images.  turning up saturation is easy, turning it down without spoiling the image is a lot more difficult.

But curious how the image is similar,,,

well, there are not so many top view, isolated rose for sale.  just go out and find a view I would say  :D

I want to give an example of how the search algorithm on IS favors exclusives and thus how important such an algorithm is to get sales.

Let's examenate this file of me.

It was uploaded 8/2007 and had between 30 and 50 downloads until 01/2008  Than downloads stopped and fell back to <10 / month

At 18/01/2008 exclusive member liliboas uploaded this file.  It has 100 DL / month

Both file are almost similar.  If we run a search on IS with the keywords red + pink + rose + isolated and sort it by most downloads, those 2 files are n1 and 2.

But if we sort it by best match, liliboas file is still first, mine drops to place 50 of 466 files. some other observations :

- only 2 non-exclusives in the top 50
- many files with even 0 downloads, all exclusives
- even some old files with 10 downloads or less, all exclusives
- my file has a DL / view ratio of 294/3550  lilliboas file : 821/17013, which is much less.

What do I want to say with this ?

It's obvious to me why my downloads stopped drastically in January for this file.  To non-exclusives this mean that you need to have a very unique file if you want to float to the top.  With average files you'll be burried under photos of exclusives

I'm glad IS dropped to 4 place for income, they deserved it :o) :o)

Different search engines, that is how it looks to me.

true.  I'm sure IS plays a lot with their search engine.  The surge in January isn't normal imho.  So I'm sure they tweaked it in my favor at that moment.

I had also one month at IS (I think it was March07) were I suddenly started to get much more downloads. then the months before.  This continued for about 3 or 4 months ... and then suddenly downloads decreased.  This can be easily seen in the charts.

Also very interesting to note, the spike in my second month at SS.  It's a common secret that SS favors newcomers in a big way.  It took me almost 8 months to break my BME at SS.

I'm sure the search engine tweaks are much more important than we often think.

General Stock Discussion / 8 months without uploads
« on: July 03, 2008, 07:18 »
Hi all,

I'm already almost a year away from the micro scene (8 months to be correct).  When I stopped uploading I thought earnings would drop to almost zero in 6 months or so.  But in fact this isn't the case.  After 8 months without any uploads I still earn 50% of my BME.  I find that pretty amazing.

I've put all in a little page on my site, together with some charts.  Just for the fun, nothing scientific  ::)

Perrush, I'm just curious: why did you stop uploading?

I guess it was just time to move on.  I sold all my equipment and focused on other things.

I quit uploading in November last year.  Since then overall earnings are down less then 50% from all time highs which I find pretty good.

While most agencies hold pretty good, IS literally dies on me.  Just look at the graph underneath.

I'm down 10% from last month but given that I uploaded only 18 images in the beginning of this month I'm happy.  I don't plan to uploaded any images this month, so let's see how my downloads evolve.

Congrats, guys.  I'll definitely take a look there - I never pay much attention to this.

and probably more don't care ... if something happened to my sales there, it's a decline  :P  No such a mention didn't cause a boost in my case
