I do have friends.
Those friends are spread out and some in key positions.
These friends are good friends.
Some owe me favors.

Your attempt to bring negative attention to me has been successful.

All of you have ruined my career, and dashed my dreams of becoming a productive
citizen of the microstock community. You have all managed to bring up my past, take it
and smash me right in the face with it.

This is what is commonly called and referred to as "Character Assassination"

I wish to extend my heart felt thanks to all 5 of you. It's good to know where I stand with you all.
I have done nothing to either one of you to deserve this and don't know why you did this to me.

Would you like a tissue???   :'( :'( :'(

Would your lifestyle change if you suddenly lost ALL the income from microstock?
My retirement pension is still adequate to allow me to live comfortable, and so most
of what I make is just found money "Mad Money" "Crazy Cash".

I am interested on how others would fair if all of a sudden the income stopped dead.
Those who work full time in the field are obviously making a living and so they don't count.

But if your like me and this is just a hobby, I would like to know how your lifestyle would change.
Rather than talk about myself, I am genuinely interested in hearing from others.

Cranky MIZ
The voice of reason

My life would change drastically, but not financially.  I would just have tons more free time!!! :D  The financial loss would not even be noticed.  I wouldn't, however, be able to justify buying new photography toys as often.   ;D

Earning potential for my image style    3

Geez people. Give the guy a break!  He stated right up front that IS doesn't care for his image style.  That would certainly lead to lower ratings in the other areas.  Everyone has different opinions about each of the sites.  There's no need to pound on someone because their opinion doesn't match yours.

I might have to try this method.  I still have about 250 and deleting one a day is getting very tedious!  And of course there are days I forget so it's going to take me another year.  lol

No problems in Colorado.  It's probably a DNS issue and will magically clear up (eventually).  :D

I was opted in until yesterday.  After I heard about the micro prices, I opted out.  All of my images are RM with the exception of 4 RF.  All of the RM images are also on PSC.  If any of the RM images sell as novel use, I'm going to have to either pull them from PSC or add restrictions.  (I haven't sold any at all yet so I'm not totally clear on how that works.)  Either way, I really don't want the extra headache for a sale that will earn just a few cents.

Are fractals really art? Do they have a place in the stock industry?

If stock buyers buy them, then they belong in the stock industry.  If art buyers buy them, then they are art. They could easily be both.  It's all in the eye of the beholder.  ;)

The point:  I shoot what I want which is primarily landscape & nature, and I get paid to do it  and I am still doing what I enjoyed doing when I shot my first 35mm picture  47 years ago.

I'm a lot like you in the sense that I shoot what I like and upload it.  If people buy it, great.  If not, oh well.  I am not really into photographing people.  But I love hiking and nature. :D

I agree with both of you!  If either of you are ever out this way, give me a shout and we'll strap on a backpack and head out on a trail. :D

General Stock Discussion / Re: Life After Microstock
« on: June 06, 2008, 18:01 »
If microstock went belly up tomorrow, my life (well my income) wouldn't be affected since I make very little with it.  My life would definitely be affected because I would have lots more spare time! :D

My plan is to always keep my day job that pays well until I can retire (hopefully not more than 10 more years).  If microstock and stock in general survives, it will be a nice extra retirement income.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Are you professional?
« on: June 06, 2008, 17:07 »
as for me,  I don't take it personal.    I thought my comment made it perfectly clear.   I couldn't care less.   I take pictures because I love to do it.  I enjoy it,  I spend many hours playing with my work in post production....      and there are those that will buy my product.

I really don't care if  I am considered a professional or not.  What I am labeled has nothing to do and does not affect how much money I am making doing something I love.  I have no doubt that I make as much or more than many who do this fulltime as their first and only job and who call themselves  "professional photographers"

It  ain't no biggie to me.  Please don't take it that,   I take it.. personal.  I don't.

 :)=tom

Well said, Tom!  I'll be writing off a trip to Australia this year because I have my little photography business on the side.  I couldn't care less about the title of professional either!  At my "day" job this year they gave me a new title of "senior programmer."  Big deal.  All I care about is how much they add to my paycheck.  They can call me anything they like as long as my paycheck is never late! :D

TFP or TFCD is actually quite a common practice.  It's a fair trade for individuals who want to build a modeling portfolio.  There are plenty of parents who would like to build a modeling portfolio for their child.  Trading a model release and time for free images is a good bargain.

That may very well be, but most pros (certainly accredited ones) only use TFP/TFCD non-commercially. The proper place for this sort of arrangement is when the photographer needs test shots and/or is building a portfolio.

I'm with sjlocke - if you're going to require a model to sign a release (i.e. you're going to use the images to make money), the ethical thing to do is pay the model for his/her time.

I see your point, but it seems calling the practice "unethical" is a bit strong.  If the model agrees that it's a fair trade, then I guess I don't see the problem.  That is as long as the photographer is up front about what he/she intends to do with the images.  If the photographer tells the model he/she intends to only use the images for a portfolio and not for stock, then I would certainly agree it's unethical.

"Recruiting models" implies that you are paying them, which I would.  Offering a couple of shots for people to give you their time and likeness is unprofessional, imo.

I've never done well there.  I've not even reached my first payout after 18 months.  But I had a $5.00 sale today!  Every time I get ready to dump them, I get a couple of downloads and I change my mind.  lol

I don't see this as being similar to the manufacturing industry.  What about the music industry?

My comment was in jest, mostly, but what if they were to drop prices to say 5 cents per download? The people who derive a the bulk of their income from microstock would no longer be able to support themselves.

Is there really that many people who derive the bulk of their income from microstock?  I'm guessing this is a fairly small number, but I certainly don't know for sure.  If the prices were to drop to 5 cents per download, I think the industry would collapse.  I would think most people that currently submit to micro would then stop.  The industry would be left with noobs trying to get rich quick.  They would quickly learn it's too much work. Just keywording and captioning alone (not to mention set up, shooting and post-processing) is not worth 5 cents per download.  I know I'd quit micro if that were to happen.

Where did they hide acceptance rate?  I thought it used to be in the "Portfolio" box right under Files, Downloads and Rating, but it's not there any longer.  I didn't get the email and I'm bronze so I'm guessing my acceptance rate is under 50%.

I had a problem finding it the other day - turns out it was starring me right in the face. Just click the "Upload" button (in the lefthand navigation), then at the centre-top of the page are a load of "Misc stats"  including your acceptance rate.

Ah...that's where I went wrong.  I haven't uploaded in a few weeks so I didn't see it!  Thanks!

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Resubmitting rejections
« on: May 23, 2008, 12:28 »
I never bother unless I feel strongly about an image and the problem is actually something that I can correct.  It's rare though that I resubmit.  I'm not sure that's the correct tactic though.  On one hand it seems like a waste of time. And in the case of IS, if it gets rejected yet again, I've wasted an upload.  On the other hand though I'm potentially losing sales.

I can't answer your question about a point and shoot for UW, but I do have some newly gained experience with UW photography.  The biggest challenge for me is maintaining my buoyancy with the camera in hand.  I have a Nikon D70 with an Ikelite housing and two external strobes.  It's quite a handful.

Light is the number one factor in getting a decent UW image.  If you're not shallow with the sun shining brightly, you'll need a flash (two would be better).  Remember that you start losing color at just 10 ft so you need the flash not only for exposure, but to return color to the image.  Another thing I've learned is to get CLOSE to your subject - as close as possible.  Otherwise, you end up with a tiny subject and your image won't be usable as stock or anything else (unless you like pix of blue water).  :D

I was a bit leary of the EWA bag so I went with the Ikelite housing.  I think the EWA bag would be great for snorkeling, but I'm not sure I'd trust it for scuba.

The biggest thing to remember is it will take time to get good at UW photography.  Hopefully you'll be able to go out either diving or snorkeling several times and checking your images between trips.  We went to Australia in February and stayed on a live aboard for a week.  We managed 23 dives.  This was our first attempt with two strobes so we were still learning a lot.  We did end up with some good images, but it's obvious there's a lot yet to learn.  It takes lots of patience and practice.

Since you're new to photography, do your best to get good above water first.  I've been shooting for 25 years as a hobbiest, but I know a lot (not that I have any talent mind you!).  UW adds an entirely new dimension.

Have fun and good luck!

I can't get anything to work on the site this morning - my daily routine to log on and delete one image.

First I got a long XML error when I tried to log on. I reloaded the main page and tried again, and it worked.

Then I tried to go to the "Sell" section to get to my portfolio and got an error that the page was unavailable or access was denied.

I guess that's one way to stop people from deleting their one a day :)

Is the site misbheaving for anyone else? I use Firefox Mac, but tried IE7 on XP and couldn't even get to the front page to log in (Page not found/access denied)

I just went in to delete my one a day too and found the same problems.  I was, however, able to get in and delete one.  The home page came up with the errors you mentioned, so I clicked on login.  I was able to login and get to my portfolio.  When I clicked to delete the image, I got a big XML error.  I cleared it and tried again.  I think it took three attempts, but the image finally deleted.
