General Stock Discussion / More Micro "Diversity" Issues
« on: December 11, 2009, 15:34 »
Ha!  Another funny bit on poor photoshop skills and stock imagery:
http://climateprogress.org/2009/12/11/oil-lobby-adds-diversity-to-its-anti-clean-energy-pamphlet-by-photoshopping-minorities-into-stock-photos/

(Thankfully, they didn't notice the Photoshop work on the reflections! ;) )

Some interesting points and thoughts, some I agree with, some not.  Just FYI.

General Macrostock / Interview with Blend's Rick Becker-Leckrone
« on: November 02, 2009, 16:55 »
Thought this interview was sufficiently interesting to post here.  For some reason it's on a stock -market- board, which confunded me at first... :)

iStockPhoto.com / iStock Warranties All Content

iStockphoto.com announced today that they are warrantying that files purchased and used in accordance with the iStock license, will not breach any trademark, copyright or other intellectual property rights or rights of privacy.

This is a direct hit on the only other micro to offer this, Vivozoom:

Personally, I am very excited about the new buyers this will bring, from the many posts, "My employer won't buy from iStock because there is no guarantee".

... and I'm not speaking of her top.  Weird they allow this way of ripping off the buyer.  Guess it doesn't really matter on a sub site?

« on: June 24, 2009, 07:43 »
In case you hadn't heard yet, iStock announced its (formerly known as "Premiere" :) ) Vetta collection this morning of 35,000 higher priced hot shot style images.

Fotolia unveiled its new collection of 350,000 free stock images:

Theres a lot of people out there where even $1 is too much for images, says Patrick Lor, Fotolias newly hired president for North America, who oversees PhotoXpress.

If they can't afford them, why is there a perceived right they should get them anyways?  Weird.

General Stock Discussion / DMCA and License
« on: May 06, 2009, 09:16 »
Say I have found a web site using my content in a prohibited way as listed in the license agreement it was downloaded under.  They are being unresponsive in taking it down.  Can I claim they are using the content and infringing my copyright as I did not give them permission to use it in that way, and have the host remove it?  The host I can contact with no problem.

"the complaining party has a good faith belief that use of the material is not authorized by the copyright owner"

What do you think?

Saw this on a news site:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/04/22/AR2009042200900.html

"There's another online marketplace for buying and selling stock photographs in town, and its name is ClusterShot."

I like this line:
"Like Adography, the quality bar is intentionally set quite low. Basically, anyone is free to upload images, even amateurs willing to contribute crappy photos of their pets."

General Stock Discussion / "Royalties" on 1099-Misc
« on: April 03, 2009, 20:54 »
Leo brought up something on iStock:
http://www.istockphoto.com/forum_messages.php?threadid=86608&page=1

About whether stock royalties should be reported as income on Schedule C, or as royalties on Schedule E on US tax forms.  Getty is reporting the income under box 2 "Royalties" on the 1099-MISC, instead of box 7 "Non-employee compensation" which I think is where this is coming from.   I report all my stock income on Schedule C.

Anybody have any discussion with their tax professional on this train of thought?  C or E ?
