Hello,

Maybe someone from EU country can explain how work VAT if I create illustrations and sale on lot of marketplaces.

How do I charge VAT on Shutterstock and does it charge buyers? Or does VAT not apply to Shutterstok, Adobe stock since it is located in the USA? But on the map we see that there are also sales in Europe or does it not matter and the main thing is where the companys office itself is located and if it is in the USA then VAT is not charged? How do you do it, how does it work?

It would be great if someone from Romania shared their experience, but I think that the entire European Union has the same rules in this regard

Thank you.

Shutterstock charges the customer the applicable rate per country, and then pays it over to each tax authority accordingly. It is their responsibility, as they are providing the taxable service to the customer, so you dont need to worry about it.

I'm happy to report that I've had a quick response from Mat, and confirmation that the sales were from a legitimate customer.
Very good to hear that and grats for the sales :)

Thank you! It's good to know that it was all above board.

If you want to put your mind at ease, why not write to Mat?

Hundreds of files instead of perhaps 20 a day, is really unusual.

However, because of the way Adobe has been blocking ports, I can understand that producers are now scared to contact Adobe.

There really should be a more professional way in dealing with this problem.

Not sure what I would do, but if I usually had 20 sales a day and then suddenly 400 files get downloaded in 10 minutes, all for the same price, so probably the same client, I think I would want to know if I can safely payout the money.

Of course, please let us know what happens if you contact Mat directly.

I hope the sales are legit and you can enjoy your special downloads day.

I think I probably will, as your figures aren't far away from what happened. The sales were over the course of about an hour, all from the same image series and all the same commission value, so presumably one customer.

If it had been a random good day, with sales spread out and with varying commissions, I would just be counting myself lucky, but something feels possibly a bit 'off' about this.

It is better to never write to Adobe support regarding any issues. I once wrote, there was some kind of primitive question. In response, some Russian lady contacted me, who began to scare me with a ban and accuse me of not forming my briefcase correctly and she didnt like what I was uploading. She made some idiotic demands on me. In short, I dont write in Adobe anymore.

If your writing style and behavior is comparable to that in the "This should settle some different opinions" thread, Adobe's reaction is quite understandable. And of course it was a Russian Orc employee, what else  ;D ;D ;D

Of course you can write to Adobe support.

Thanks, but for now I will wait and see over the weekend.

If nothing else, I have reported the issue here and tagged Mat in the thread. I'm sure Adobe will act quickly enough if the sales are suspicious and, although I'd obviously be disappointed, I'm not attempting to withdraw the earnings at this stage, so the money is still with Adobe if it needs to be checked further. I'm pretty sure anyone wanting to behave underhandedly would act to withdraw the earnings ASAP.

Hopefully it's a legitimate and established buyer.

what issue?why report? :)

Whatever the reason why you sold 15 times more than usual in one day,I don't think it's your concern.

perhaps a customer needed a lot of content that he downloaded from different portfolios,or perhaps your portfolio was highlighted,in any case,if there is a problem don't worry,Adobe will contact you, there is no need to report anything.

then for goodness sake,it's your call and it's your choice! :)

Yes, maybe a customer did need a lot of specific content, and that's what I'm hoping. But if someone stole a credit card and used it to download hundreds of images from my portfolio, then I don't want there to be an assumption that I'm somehow involved.

Rightly or wrongly, I've read reports here of other accounts being suspended pending investigation for what is perceived to be suspicious sales activity, which is why I asked for some input. Of course it's ultimately my decision to report or not, but I wanted to make an informed choice based upon what others may have experienced.

@lima
thank you for lettings us know about the tax-form
Mine expired too this month - maybe they should give a hint to that, would make it easier :-)

I think they did?

We all had to submit a new tax form.

Here's part of the email sent out in November 2023:

Hi Creator,

We recently updated the Contributor Agreement regarding requirements to meet global regulatory requirements. Starting April 1, 2024, Creator payouts will be subject to additional US royalties withholding tax applied to the US-sourced portion of your income.

To meet these requirements, you will need to complete the following actions, otherwise we may withhold payments:

- You are required to re-register your payout methods
- You are required to submit tax forms applicable to you

right, good call, it was just regular stock back then.  i didn't realize ss did the levels thing a while ago, did they just lower the thresholds in 2020?

The old levels were lifetime earnings, and not this ridiculous annual reset.

You got 25c to start, then 33c, 36c and finally 38c. To get 38c, you had to have over $10,000 earnings.

Of course, this awful new system meant that those with $10k earnings were hit the hardest, with a drop from 38c to 10c per subscription download.

Back in the day, you also got $2.85 for an On Demand sale at Shutterstock, and $28 for an EL. On Demand sales used to be about every 7th download on average. These days, they hardly exist, and I recently got an EL that earned me $3 in commission, so the customer paid $10.

If I could turn the clocks back at Shutterstock, I would do so in a heartbeat, as it's become a shadow of its former self.

At least Adobe is picking up the slack, and has become the 'go to' site for both sales and service. Let's hope that lasts for a long time to come.

I've always found Adobe support to be very helpful - occasionally a bit slow with responses, but no other complaints.

Mat Hayward is usually willing to clarify things on here as well, but I get your point about not rocking the boat unnecessarily. I certainly don't want to take any actions that instigate an investigation. Sometimes I think the sites have a bit of a knee-jerk response that serves them well, but doesn't do the contributors any favours. I guess that's the nature of the beast we are dealing with.

yesterday was a strong day for me too,you have nothing to worry about.

a few months ago I also had a spectacular day where I sold practically every kind of content in a few hours,I think these are normal fluctuations in Adobe's sales system, occasionally even for a few hours or just a day, your portfolio can be highlighted, and you start selling a lot more than usual.

when it happened to me I sold 30 times more in one day than usual, but I didn't worry in the slightest, because I know I didn't do anything wrong.

I'm glad it happened to you, because in my opinion it means it will happen to me too again! :D

Thank you, you've helped put my mind at rest a bit. My download numbers were about 15 times my daily average, which was wonderful and alarming in equal measures!

but should I be reporting this to someone just in case?

Wasn't there actually a case here recently where a contributor noticed suspicious activitis, reported it to Adobe and then got his account banned? Considering this, reporting the issue to Adobe seems like a risk.

Thanks for your input, and you may well be right.

I've read some real horror stories on here over the last several months but, as we only have a somewhat one-sided account of events, I've no idea of whether any action taken by Adobe has been heavy handed or not. I certainly can't afford to lose my account, or even risk it being suspended pending an investigation, which is why I thought reporting and preempting a problem might be advisable.

From what you say, it seems that I am potentially at risk either way. I guess I will wait and see what happens next, and hope that the purchases are from a legitimate customer.

I've read a lot recently about people getting their accounts suspended for 'irregular sales activity', so it's actually made me worry that a great sales day could end badly.

I've had a large series of images downloaded and, although this has happened before on other sites, it's the first time it's happened to this extent on Adobe.

I'm assuming the sales are legitimate, and I'm not looking to suddenly cash out the earnings, but should I be reporting this to someone just in case? Maybe @MatHayward could advise if there is anything I need to do?

Received $60.97 for the Contributor fund today.
I'm not complaining about the extra money, but my choice actually looked like this:

Maybe it's some sort of recurring usage from prior to when we had an opt-out option?

I have the same problem. Some photos that have been sitting in the queue for a couple of months have suddenly jumped from 'Submitted 2 months ago' to 'Submitted 1 year ago'.

Hello all, i am opted in for data set contribution for rejected images. But i have had several rejections which are easily passable after tweaking. But since 2 weeks, the images in the data set collection won't delete, no matter how much i try. Do you encounter the same problem? Ty

Yep, same problem. I thought I'd deleted one, as it said something about 24 hours to remove, but it keeps coming back. I've been trying for several days, but it just won't go.

« on: January 19, 2024, 05:25 »
I've been having an issue related to payouts. I tried to contact them using the form in Support Center & Contact Us seciton but I encounter an error (a generic message just saying there was an error) every time I hit "Submit".

It's been like this for the past two months and I missed receiving my payout two months in a row.

Is there any other way to contact them? Perhaps an email address to which I can directly write?

Send an email to [email protected]

Judging by those who smugly announce their earnings on FaceBook groups, I'd say that plenty make some decent money before being shut down. The fraudsters also recommend setting up multiple accounts in various family member names, so that if one gets shut down, everything is not lost.

And you believe them?  :) SS has shut down family members because of IP address, camera data and computer sharing. It's not as easy as some FB brag.

...

What FB group, I'd love to go read what they have to brag about. I can't understand how thieves, with collected images, make more than people here who are smart and work hard?

Family members don't necessarily live at the same address or share an IP, and I know for a fact of some contributors doing this. As I also know of legitimate contributors  running two separate accounts from the same IP.

The thieves make money because they skim off better content. We all know that, as a general rule, 20% of the images make 80% of the money, but if they are selecting the best images, then they can certainly increase the sales percentage in their favour. It's always been quality over quantity, so if you steal 50 spectacular images, then they are likely to make more than a beginner with 50 snapshots of his back yard.

I'm sure people wouldn't keep contributing if they weren't earning anything as, even with stolen content, you still have to upload it. If you only make a dollar a week, then people wouldn't bother.

If you then add on the number of 'free trial' accounts that only download this content, then it doesn't take long to start earning.

Bottom line, I don't care whether it is lucrative for them or not, but I care about a database being flooded with stolen content that heavily competes against the legitimate stuff.

As for the FaceBook group, search Shutterstock Contributors, Shutterstock Contributors Worldwide, etc. There are loads of groups, and they all have a smattering of crooks bragging about their successes.

It's a cat and mouse game.  Probably many of the same repeat fraudsters keep doing this again and again somewhere in the world where cost of living is low.

True and some of them work harder at it, until they get shut down. I still wonder if they ever make payout, or if it's just a stupid cat and mouse, and the only ones who lose, are the artists whose images are stolen?

Judging by those who smugly announce their earnings on FaceBook groups, I'd say that plenty make some decent money before being shut down. The fraudsters also recommend setting up multiple accounts in various family member names, so that if one gets shut down, everything is not lost.

Once you start looking for similars, it's a rabbit hole, and you might find the same image, with minor changes, in several different accounts. It becomes difficult to figure out where the original has come from, but each account that gets closed is just the tip of the iceberg.

I'm sure those with only a page of images don't make much, unless they get a lucky large sale, but some of these portfolios are quite big, and have been online for some time.

This, for example:

https://www.shutterstock.com/g/Dairvi

Over a thousand quality images covering major holidays and events, and from the ID numbers, the first were uploaded in March 2023. The 90 day wait period has long since passed, so even at $100 a month earnings, this contributor has potentially made $1000 or more.
