Cameras / Lenses / Re: Opinions on lenses
« on: May 31, 2006, 13:45 »
Quick question for your Striker... do you find you still have the same focusing issues with the EX line of lenses over the regular Sigma consumer lenses?  I just want to make sure I understand what you mean by liking the EX lenses better.  I ask because I was seriously considering the Sigma 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6 EX DG APO OS (Optical Stabilizer) but just can't get passed that whole focus problem.  One would think it would be better for a $1000 lens but I know this is probably not the case.

I apologize in advance because my comment isn't about these specific lenses, but rather about Sigma lenses as a whole.  I have not had good experience with Sigma brand lenses in respect to good autofocus.  This could be due to them having to reverse engineer to get their lenses to work with Canon gear, I'm not sure.  I owned a Sigma 18-125 mm for a while and was never happy with it.  When it would focus properly it was tack sharp.  The problem was it would miss focus more times than not.  Shortly after buying it I found it had a front-focus issue as well so I sent it back to Sigma for repair.  Sigma put in a new chip and it came back with the front focus problem fixed but unfortunately it still mis-focused a lot.  I just couldn't chance missing a good shot due to bad focus so I sold it.  I saved my pennies and sold a couple of kidneys on Ebay and got a 17-85 IS and a 70-300 IS and couldn't be happier.  If you are on a tight budget and have no alternative than to buy third party then maybe sketchy focus is something you can live with.  It could be that I just had a bad copy.  Unfortunately I've read very similar opinions on DPReview.com as well so this is definitely something you should think about before buying.

Good luck to you.

I know that Bigstock won't allow you to remove any until 90 days has passed since you uploaded them.  I really hate this because I'm hardly making any money there and stopped uploading to them for this reason.  As soon as my 90 days is up I'm yanking all of my stuff from their site.  I'm not sure about the other sites.

General Stock Discussion / Re: What is your job?
« on: May 26, 2006, 09:32 »
I know this is a bit of an old thread but it's a very slow day at work and I'm bored.  I am a Programming Support Analyst - Computer Geek for short - for an insurance company in the US.  I'm not a programmer per se but assist the programmers in our IT department with troubleshooting and fixing problems with our in-house insurance claims system. I also do various other computer-geek related work here that's too boring to go into.   ;D  Microstock is a new hobby for me but one that is paying off nicely for only doing it for 3 months.  I also design and sell t-shirts and other products for female motorcyclists. (I too am a female biker)  With the combined income I receive through t-shirt sales and microstock I'm hoping to make my first photo equipment purchase soon to reinvest in this photography sickness I have.  I can't decide if I should go for my first L lens or some studio lighting.  Decisions, decisions.    :-\

Cool, thanks.  I'll contact them.

Anyone know if there is an easy way to change the extended license price for all your photos at one time?  I thought I remember reading something about that but maybe I made that up... ;D

207
For all you Firefox users (and if you don't use Firefox, you should!!) there is a new extension that gives you your SS stats at the bottom of your browser.  Check out this thread on the SS forums for details.  I installed it this morning and it works like a champ!

Speak of the devil, I just sold one for $10.  Now I'm thinking I might need to raise that...  Hmmm... :-\

209
If I remember the rules correctly, you can only start picking your prices (not only for extended licenses, but even for regular sales) once you achieve a certain number of downloads.

Regards,
Adelaide

I don't think this is true because once you upload your photos and you go to finish them off they give you an option at the bottom to enter a number between 1 and 20.  I don't think they would do that if you weren't eligibile. Seems silly to give the option if it isn't truly available.  I could be wrong though.

I uploaded about 90 files to them and got all accepted this past Friday morning. (5/19)  Here it is only Monday (5/22) and I've already gotten 8 downloads!  That's pretty darn impressive.  Wish I had uploaded to them earlier.  Live and learn I guess.   ;D

211
A good question indeed.  I just started uploading to them as well and after searching for info on how everyone was pricing theres and not finding much, I just decided to go with $10 on all of them.  I figured half way between cheap and expensive and I couldn't go wrong.  We'll see if I ever sell any that way.

212
Yeah, I had one of mine go in there as well for copyright concerns.  Get comfortable because it took almost 2 months for them to finally accept my image.  ::)  Good luck to you.

GeoPappas dont you use IPTC data? its really a time saver

I second that!  IPTC data saved me a ton of time.  I really hate keywording so having the ability to only have to do it once for all my photos was a life saver.  I just wish iStock would get with the program. (It doesn't seem work on their site.  At least with the program I use.)

214
I'm in agreement with GeoPappas.  I will be removing my images from BigStock as soon as that 90 day thing is over.  (I believe they say in their agreement that you must keep them up for at least 90 days before you can remove them.)  They were one of the first sites I submitted to and my images have done very poorly.  I've only made $4 there compared to $130 at SS in the same time frame of 2 months.  Of course, to each his own but I'm not going to waste my time with them.

I like to do the big 3 (SS, IS, DT) all at once. Unfortunately it usually works out to being only SS and DT first because they take FTP uploads and IS doesn't.  It takes so * long to do IS, even using multiple Firefox tabs, that it ends up taking me a couple of days to finish if I have a large grouping.  I just started submitting to Fotolia this week so they will be added to the list of the ones I upload to first.  I sure wish IS would get on the FTP bandwagon.  I tried that ImageManger app they offer but lost my patience with it.  I don't bother doing one at a time since they all seem to have different ideas of what should be rejected.  Just my .02.

General - Top Sites / Re: Top Producing Site

Shutterstock is my top earner by far with iStock a bit behind.  I get more images accepted at Shutterstock so I assume that's the reason.  I've got 67 images at Shutterstock and 44 images at iStock.

You've really got a great site here with lots of good information, especially for the newbies.  I really wish I would have known about this site when I first started in the stock world.  I would love to see you get more coverage but I know most of the site specific forums probably don't allow it.  Luckily Shutterstock doesn't seem to have a problem with it because that's how I learned about this place.   ;D  When I get back from vacation I'll see about putting a link to you on my website/blog.

I don't think I'll bother with them just yet.  I found out about them by getting spammed by them, which didn't rate too highly on my list, if you know what I mean.  For now I'm just sticking with the 4 I'm uploading to.  (IS, SS, DT, and Bigstock)

« on: April 27, 2006, 16:00 »
I highly reccommend Shutterstock.  I get twice as many downloads using them than I do with iStock and I've never had one rejection from them.  They are a heck of a lot quicker on approvals too.  Usually less than 24 hours.

General Stock Discussion / Anyone heard of Crestock.com?
« on: April 27, 2006, 09:24 »
I found an email in my inbox this morning from someone with Crestock.com, saying he'd been to my website and liked my stuff and  invited me to submit my images to their site.  I found this a little odd because the gallery on my website hasn't been updated in years so it's not all that great. They seem rather small so I doubt I'll bother but wondered if anyone else had heard of them or gotten one of these emails?

Well, I guess I can't complain too much because late this afternoon I just got 15 approved by Bigstock.  Go figure.  I'm not gonna sweat it I guess.

Yes, iStock loves to reject my stuff as well.  I'm always more surprised by getting approvals from IS than by getting rejected.  No big deal to me since SS snatches all those up and sells them like crazy for me.   ;D

Well, I just got a huge batch of rejections from them this morning and it only took a little over a week so like Leaf said, maybe there's something wrong.

On a side note... the majority of the rejections all said "General low interest subject, not enough demand / selling potential for this photo" or "We have enough of this subject already...sorry".  Admittedly I'm quite bitter about this as all of these shots are selling like hotcakes on both SS and IS.   ???  I know I shouldn't take this personally but it's hard knowing how well these are selling elsewhere. Oh well, their loss I guess.

How are the downloads there?  I'm already submitting to 4 sites right now and was sort of hoping to stick with just them... however if you guys are getting good downloads at this spot I may just jump on board.

Holy cow... 20 days??  That's horrible!  I just finished submitting a ton to them so I guess I can just sit back and wait.... and wait.... and wait....
