I wonder if this has something to do with an issue I emailed them about on Monday. (Maybe others did too)  I uploaded 23 images on Oct. 28.  On Nov. 6-7 several of them were inspected but 7 of them were still left out there.  On Monday I emailed contributor relations and got a response back remarkably quick. (few hours)  Below is their response:

Unfortunately, there was a database error with these files which was preventing them from entering the inspection queue.  We have re-processed the files on your behalf and they will be back in the inspection queue by Wednesday at the latest.  If the files are not inspected by this time, please do contact us again.  We do apologize for any inconvenience.

I've been having problems getting into their site in the mornings.  Right now for example.  It's slower than dirt.  When/if I do get the page to come up it's only text with no formatting.  This happened yesterday morning and today. (8:47 am Eastern time)  Anyone else?

I only just found out about the Miz this morning.  So very sad.  His tutorials were very helpful to me and saved me hours of work.  I didn't always agree with his views but his posts were definitely entertaining at times.  He will be missed.  My sincerest condolences to his family.   :-[

Cameras / Lenses / Re: Canon 5d Mark II in stock at BHphoto
« on: September 25, 2008, 12:07 »
I had a bad experience when I purchased from Adorama. After ordering online they called me so that they could hard sell me on other things. I don't like it when someone tries to upsell me after I've already made the purchase and especially don't like it when the person doing the hard sale is lying to me in order to make the sale. That was just my experience and maybe it was a unique one but I don't think so. I've only purchased from B&H and Amazon since then.

I had a very similar experience.  I placed an order and received a call from a very rude guy trying to upsell me while lying to me in the process.  When I called the guys bluff he hung up on me.  Needless to say I canceled that order.  This was several years ago and I haven't been back since.  I understand what Helen is saying about how they have changed things but it's hard to erase that kind of treatment from ones mind.  Perhaps I'll consider them again if I can't find an item anywhere else but they won't be my first choice.

Helen,
Thanks for chiming in.  It is nice to know that there is someone we can go to if a similar occurrence happens.  Welcome.

Well, it looks like Chad is none too happy that several people have asked to opt out of BilderKing's service.  He posted the following message on that thread after several of us asked to opt out:

Quote
Please do not use this forum to create a list of people who want to opt out. Andre, I encourage you to speak with our CEO before you do anything further.

To the rest of you please do not post an opt out list on the Fotolia forum. You joined Fotolia for us to promote your images. This is what we are doing. If you are unhappy with how we do business then I am happy to discuss this with you. Please know that Fotolia is an open community you are free to come and go as needed.

I replied to the message asking them to filter me from this cr@p.  If nothing else Fotolia needs to know just how much this is enraging their contributors.  I'm sure they'll continue to ignore it but at least I got to have my say.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Tear Sheets - Post your finds here

Congratulations! That's amazing.

What camera did you use to get an image that size?   :o

Many thanks!!  It was taken with a 5D.  I assume they did some fancy upsizing to get it that large.

Adobe Stock / Re: Fotolia missing credits?
« on: June 25, 2008, 22:05 »
I just went through mine back to Nov. and have 2 sales that were reversed due to declined credit card.  On May 9th I had $1.85 removed due to "Buyer's credit card declined" on an original sale date of March 26th.  Again, on May 21st, same reason, for an original sale date of April 17th.  Both were different people.  JSNover, I'm about to PM you so we can compare notes on the names to see if any are the same.

Rating out of 10 is very subjective - where is 1 and where is 10. So maybe % might work better. Not sure though.

Ageed.  I like percentage better for this reason.

Well, I'll be d@mned, you're right.  I googled it and sure enough... :o Maybe I just need a new USB reader then as mine quite possibly isn't 2.0.  Thanks Sharply.

After sitting around and waiting for nearly 2 hours to download a bunch of raw images with my USB CF card reader I'm looking into getting a firewire card reader.  Anyone use one and have any recommendations?  Thanks in advance.

Lighting / Re: What do you use for backing?
« on: June 17, 2008, 11:34 »
Seren, what do you do with full body shots on the lastolite?  I have their stupid expensive vinyl floorcloth (waste of 150 bucks) and it looks just awful in the pix.  It's always grey or if I try to light it the lower limbs are overexposed.   What works for you?  I'd love to do it all in-camera, but the floor always adds too much time in post.

Maybe I should shoot no full body shots. ;)

I'd be interested in this as well.  I've been looking at the Lastolite HiLite but wasn't sure it was worth the $$$.  Any who have it, are you happy with it?  Any pros and cons you can share?  Looks like it would be good for partial body but how would you do a full body and maintain a seamless look? (or can you even do such a thing?)

This isn't entirely a "backing" response, but might readers of this thread might be interested.  Zack Arias has written the BEST tutorials on shooting on white that I've ever come across.

I've blogged several links to the chapters so I'll just point you to my blog:

Thanks for posting this Pixart.  It has some excellent information in it.

I've been using a roll of heavy, arctic white background paper from B&H but the Formica sounds like the ticket for sure.  I must try that.

Adobe Stock / Re: US Petition to improve FT subs model
« on: June 14, 2008, 07:43 »
Not really.  It's still less than the Shutterstock rates.

Fotolia have really shown their true colors to contributors in this debacle - is it really the case that two weeks of experience in the subs market gives them the knowledge needed to raise commissions?  What absolute bollocks.  No businessman I know would make a judgement based on two weeks.  No - Fotolia set out to screw their contributors, destroyed three years of goodwill and are now backtracking and making excuses.

And its appalling that no word has been heard from senior management depite all the upset and petitions - they've left the job to a junior lacky and hidden behind their Mercedes and Armani suits.

Once a screwer always a screwer.  It will take a very long time indeed for confidence to be restored.  If ever.

I completely agree hatman!!  In my opinion 2 weeks would never be adequate in the business world as true experience for something like this.  What they're doing is called damage control.  Am I happy with the new rates?  No, not really.  Sure, they are better but it's still lower than SS.  I stick by what I said before, I will stick this out to see how FT sub sales effect my overall bottom line.  As of today I have yet to receive any sub sales. (knocking on wood that I won't!)

And another thing... the way Chad's post on the yahoo group was worded sounds quite condescending to me.  Particularly the 4th paragraph.  (here's a direct link for those who missed it: http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/micropayment/message/20539) Compare it with the way Alamy handled their recent contributor backlash.  They sent a very lengthy newsletter explaining more about the new program and gave contributors the option to opt out.  They also announced the opt out on the blog.  Chad posts his in a 3rd party forum that not all FT contributors read, insulting the protesters in the process. He then posted a quick 3 sentence blurb in the FT forums with no explanation or anything close to what he put in the yahoo forum.  Nothing on their blog either.

Sorry FT but you're name is still mud in my book.

Hi Lee, do you have a different link that doesn't require a paid subscription to read it? (or am I doing something wrong?)

Alamy.com / Re: Alamy now offer a micro license
« on: June 09, 2008, 11:40 »
I just signed up at Alamy so was pretty interested to see what this was about.  I'm quite surprised they are doing this without giving contributors the option to opt out until April.  Seems to me they are changing the terms of the original novel use scheme quite a bit.  Pretty sleazy of them, especially after specifically saying novel use "shouldnt be confused with Micropayment" back in Sept when they announced it.

45
I haven't uploaded to FT in a while but I have no intention of doing so after this subscription fiasco.  I do plan on hanging around a bit to see if they will come to their senses but if not, and if I see a significant number of sub sales coming in, then I'm pulling my portfolio.  Any of you who plan on staying around are welcome to any sales I'll be missing.  At least I'll be able to sleep at night.  It's not all about money when it's something you feel strongly about.  That's just my opinion.

Oh, and on another note, when I found Chad's post on the Yahoo micropayment group showing that quote of his I just about lost my lunch.  What a * turncoat.  In case you guys missed his full post that includes his quote you can see it here if you have a Yahoo account:

Adobe Stock / Re: Fotolia subs...
« on: May 30, 2008, 21:57 »
On top of the subscription issue, May was really slow at FT for me. Although it's not a huge earner (8% average) it's the lowest earnings I've had since November. Seems like every time they change something (V2, search engine, etc) contributors suffer.

They were showing promise but this is just another push for me toward IS exclusivity.

Agreed.  Quite frankly, even if I don't choose to go exclusive at IS, I feel my work is simply worth more than .23.  Even if I reduce my overall earnings slightly by removing my Fotolia portfolio, I will be able to sleep better at night knowing I'm not giving my work away for such a paltry amount.  I posted a message on Chad's thread but suspect it will get removed.  Hopefully he will still see it regardless.

Well as far as I'm concerned, this is an insult to contributors.  I'm not sure when this will actually be implemented, thanks to Fotolia's piss-poor communication, but I will be removing my portfolio when it does go into effect, if not before.

48
I got it and I must admit, it intrigued me quite a bit.  Since 60% of my income comes from IS, along with me being a gold canister, their new teaser could push me over the edge if they do it right.  Especially after reading about Fotolia's insluting subscription plan.  I'll be eagerly awaiting the outcome of this.

49
I had a nice little surprise in today's IS Contact Sheet newsletter... they used one of my best sellers next to the section about video FTP server.  ;D I never thought I'd see one of my pics in one of their newsletters so this sure put a smile on my face.  Here's a link to the web version of the Contact Sheet for those who aren't subscribed. http://recp.rm05.net/servlet/MailView?ms=MTA4MjY4OQS2&r=MTM0NTQ1ODA0OQS2&j=MTA4ODUxNTcyS0&mt=1

This is the image they used.

I would charge the same as I do for my non-stock work.  So much an hour/half-day/full day allowing in this for travel, expenses and editing time and whether you are providing hard-copy or digitial prints.

I don't really have a regular hourly/half day/full day rate that I charge since I am fairly new to the special request thing so this really wouldn't work for me just yet. Thanks for the suggestion though.

I get this type of stuff regularly, and charge $100 for high res (17MP) and $20 for small (< 2MP). Nobody has ever balked at the price, and one customer even paid me substantially more... <snip>

Excellent information Sharply!  Thank you.  Anyone else?
