It would kind of depend on what their intention with the shot is.  If its something that's going to be displayed on a large product run, then you should definitely charge more than for something that's going to wind up as a small graphic on the company's internal intranet.

As for how much, I'm afraid that I won't be of much help, but price it like a commercial shoot--figure in your time for travel, set-up & tear-down, shooting, and editing.  I've made more off of commercial shoots than I have off of stock.

Yes, you bring up a good point.  I guess what I'm most interested in is work that would encompass a standard rather than EL type license.  Web usage, church bulletin, etc.

Hi everyone.  I have recently been asked to do a few special request photos where the transaction will be handled privately between me and the customer and not through any microstock agency.  I have done this once before and since it was my first time doing it, I only charged a bit more than what the customer would have paid for an XL size image on IS.  It was nice getting all of the money rather than IS taking their rather large cut.  Now that I have had a couple of more requests I'm curious if I should be charging more. (or less?)  If anyone would be willing to share, what do you charge for special request stock photos where the transaction is being handled privately between you and the customer?  I know discussing money can be a bit taboo when it comes to this sort of thing but I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask.  Thanks in advance.

I am having a horrible May at IS.  This is, in fact, the reason I logged into to MS group, to see if others were having the same problem.  I guess it could be a combination of pre-summer slowdown and non-American holidays as others mentioned.  We're still unpacking from our move so I don't get out much these day. :)  Let's hope it gets better soon.  It pains me to look at my stats...

Here are mine.

IS - 56%    (344 images)  BME
FT - 16%    (355 images)  BME
SS - 14%   (419 images)
DT - 14%   (356 images)  BME

I'm still pondering exclusivity at IS but I just can't get past some of the decisions they make.  Every time I inch closer to it they do something stupid. (case in point, I am not happy about their current month-long sale)  A lot may depend on how much of a raise SS comes up with in May.

pixelbrat how did you got property release for figurines (toys)? i had a few nice images with toys (santa - velvet dolls actually) rejected with "no property release" rejection.

These were all approved without releases, believe it or not.  I have had a handful that were indeed rejected for that reason but I must have had a different inspector on the rest.  That's not to say they won't be deactivated later on given the new tighter standards they have been rolling out.

By the way, just wanted to say that I LOVE your work!!  I rated a few of your illustrations a while back when I stumbled upon your port.  Great portfolio!!  Hope things start to look up for you.  Oh and congrats on the new addition.   :D

But if I could ask the more experienced here, what is it about taking some time off that causes sales to drop after a few weeks? I mean, Istock alone was doing $100 days for me, and now I'm fortunate to see $50. Its still has a random up and down, but overall the trend is pointing down.

I don't know that I'd call myself "more experienced" but I am not seeing the same trend that you are as far as taking time off from IS.  (This is definitely the case at SS though)  I haven't uploaded anything to IS in ages, due in part to getting ready to sell my house, and I haven't noticed any significant loss in downloads from that.  I'm not sure what could have caused that in your case.  There are so many factors at work here that it would really be tough to try to nail that down.  best match changes, ebb & flow, Jupiter lining up with Mars... who's to say.  ;D

Also wanted to edit to say that actually my earnings have gone up slightly each month, despite not uploading any new photos.  Of course this could all change at a blink of an eye, I'm sorry to say.

Looks like you're right.  I must have snuck in when they came back up briefly but it's down again for me.  No octopus though.

Jsnover, I'll be watching this thread to see if you make any headway.  I noticed the new ID requirement last week when I requested a payment but wanted my money so just gave in.  I have to admit, it makes me feel a bit helpless when sites change their terms, offer big sales that make us less commissions or hold our payments hostage.  What to do... what to do.  Good luck to you.

It was an error

http://www.istockphoto.com/forum_messages.php?threadid=65367&page=4

I don't know if you all missed this post or not but the whole thing was an error on the part of IS.  The buyers got the images cheaper but the photographers get the commission at the higher price so everyone should be happy .

fotographer, I thought the same thing until I read a bit further into that post on IS.  As Seren mentioned, they are having a month-long sale.  See here:

The only goof apparently was that they let the cat out of the bag early.

Lovely.  I guess I needed this little reminder for why I'm not exclusive.  If they want to have their little sale, fine.  But give contributors their normal commission rate, not a discounted one.

Thank you so much, you guys.  Wow, I really love this place.   ;D

Just wanted to share some excitement... I reached gold cannister level at IS today with this image below:

Seems I'm in good company since I saw Sharply_Done reached gold recently as well.  (Congrats Sharply!!) Given my small portfolio I was quite surprised to reach it when I did.  I've been unable to shoot for the last couple of months due to home repairs in preparation to sell our home and move.  We've come a long way and the house is getting close to being done but given the home market in the US right now... it could take a while to actually sell it.  At the rate I'm going I won't be able to take advantage of the increased uploads for another 2 or 3 months!   :(

I found this blog very informative if you have the time:  http://www.soundadviceblog.com/?p=444

This was very cool!  Thanks for posting that.

I just found out that my mom won the grand prize for some sweepstakes.  The prize includes all sorts of stuff, including a camera, a wide-format printer, all sorts of scrapbook stuff and best of all.... an Alien Bees Beginner Bee set up!  My mom has no use for the lighting so it will be mine as soon as it arrives.  Woo hoo!! ;D I was actually planning on purchasing some Bees in the next year so this was great timing and luck. :)

Welcome Precarious!  I just wanted to add my 2 cents and reiterate what a few others have said.  Like Leaf mentioned, do some searches on the big 6 and see which subjects need some filling out, or even see what you can do better than what exists.  Coming up with creative concept imagery is also a good idea.  I know many mention that you'll need between 1000-2000 images to reach your $1,000.00 month goal but that isn't necessarily the case.  If you can find a good niche and capture some much needed subjects you can achieve that goal on much less.  I didn't think it was possible but I reached that goal last month with my portfolio of between 345-450 images, which varies depending on the site. (I'm still doing the happy dance! ;D)  Good luck to you and hope to see you more around here!!

General - Top Sites / Re: January 2008 earnings breakdown
« on: February 03, 2008, 09:56 »
Here are my stats for January:

IS - 56%
SS - 17%
DT - 15%
FT - 12%

I reached a major milestone this month.  It was the first month that I broke the $1,000 per month mark!  I'm so excited!!   ;D

I have to admit, seeing how much of my earnings come from istock and the fact that I'll be at gold in a few weeks, I'm seriously considering going exclusive.  Granted, I'm tied down for the next few months at DT  >:( which will give me plenty of time to think it over more but it could be in my future.

72
Thanks Sharply!  The scenery will certainly be an improvement!   ;D

My hubby and I are preparing to sell our house and move to the mountains.  This means most of my studio is all packed up.  :(  When I'm not at work or taking a peak at these forums I'm doing home repairs and painting.  Ick!  I can't wait until this is all over and I can unpack the studio again and get back to shooting.

Yeah, their support is pretty deplorable.  I've got one image that has been waiting in the Executive Queue since October 15th and another since November 19th.  I guess I need to give up and submit them again else I'll grow old waiting on them to be reviewed.

Thanks, Sharpshot!  I was wondering what the heck was going on.  Thought maybe my math skills had seriously deteriorated overnight or I had started hallucinating!  ;-)

But...it looks like IS is rolling back the prices for buyers in the UK and Euro, so I'm assuming the great commissions will be coming to an end soon.  :-(

Thanks for posting this Karimala.  I wouldn't have seen it otherwise.  It's going to be a bummer seeing those higher commissions go but I can understand why they did it.
