If, as they have said, they move non-selling images down into main, and at the same time move better selling images up from main, then they will still be able to say that half their images are at 1/2 price.

They haven't said it will be the same half :)

WordPress causes it; it's standard behaviour on the first login, but shouldn't happen again. Agreed, it's a bit strange if you haven't seen it before.

There's probably a way to stop it - check the wordpress.org support forums.

Well that's the beauty of Sym - we don't have to all do the same thing.

However, thinking about it, I'm still keen on the hub idea. I can see a group of hubs - lifestyle, food, travel, where those interested can put their relevant files. We'd all have the same EULA and a centralised shopping cart, possibly same prices? I don't know about prices, I've got files I'm happy to sell for a dollar or two, others, not. Whether the cart would be individual to the hub, or sit above all the hubs, I don't know.

Hopefully, more people will be interested and join in with ideas.

I like the sound of this.

I have been thinking about splitting our site - we could have 3 seperate sites for our different subjects of food, travel and other, and each could be part of a different hub. Is there an easy way, Leo, of getting stuff from one site to another without having to re-do the metadata?

edit - Colin has just suggested that we do two copies of PictureMojo, and delete what we don't want from each of the three sites, this would work.

Anyway, the Pacific Rim is open for business and we are going out for a while, but will be thinking about this.

Symbiostock - Technical Support / Re: Paypal IPN Errors
« on: July 16, 2013, 20:41 »
Ok, found the setting, I'd updated the sandbox but not the live account. I've put the URL in so it doesn't fault on non-Symbio payments, such as agency payouts. It doesn't seem to like going through the redirect.

Thanks, Leo!

Symbiostock - Technical Support / Paypal IPN Errors
« on: July 16, 2013, 18:49 »
We've just had an email from PayPal to say:

Please check your server that handles PayPal Instant Payment Notifications (IPN). IPNs sent to the following URL(s) are failing:

http://photo.travelling-light.net/wp-content/themes/symbiostock/ipn/paypal_ipn.php

First, that domain and subdomain are out of date, although the address forwards to the correct PictureMojo address, and I can't find where that one comes from.

Second, the server PHP error log is showing errors like:

Code: [Select]
PHP Warning: require_once(/home1/xxxxxxxx/public_html/picturemojo/wp-content/themes/symbiostock/ipn/../wp-load.php) [<a href='function.require-once'>function.require-once</a>]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home1/xxxxxxxx/public_html/picturemojo/wp-content/themes/symbiostock/ipn/paypal_ipn.php on line 3
PHP Fatal error: require_once() [<a href='function.require'>function.require</a>]: Failed opening required '/home1/xxxxxxxx/public_html/picturemojo/wp-content/themes/symbiostock/ipn/../wp-load.php' (include_path='.:/usr/lib64/php:/usr/lib/php:/usr/share/pear') in /home1/xxxxxxxx/public_html/picturemojo/wp-content/themes/symbiostock/ipn/paypal_ipn.php on line 3

and I'm not sure about the path in line 3 of paypal_ipn.php - doesn't look right above or in the source code. wp-load.php is in the WP root.

A test purchase from the sandbox worked perfectly. I have the return URL set to the one in Symbiostock  > Settings.

Any bright ideas?

It's Paypal, Jens, not credit card, not Western Union.

Keep the objections coming though, I'm definitely interested in what you're saying.

As an aside, we had a Photoshelter site from June 2012, we have had more sales on Sym than on Photoshelter in the first 3 months, when Sym is completely unknown. Numbers are small, for sure, but I'm optimistic.

I'm seeing this as a long term project. I don't expect it to compare with the big agencies in the first years.

I do think it's a good place to put those niche photos that sell only once a year on the likes of SS and IS, and I'm putting them exclusively on Sym.

Symbiostock - General / Re: Backing Up to DropBox
« on: July 15, 2013, 20:33 »
On the database backup front we use the WP-DBManager plugin on all Wordpress sites. This not only backs up the database on a schedule (we use a 3-day cycle) to a nominated folder, but can email you a copy so you have it locally.

All child theme modding and the little core WP hacking we do is done locally in Dreamweaver and uploaded, so we can recreate the site very quickly. Dropbox might be worth considering for images at $9.99/month for 100GB, in case Bluehost disappears completely.

I agree with a lot of what Cathy says, but I also think JPSDK has some good points. I said right at the start that everyone should use the same licence, and I hadn't realised that some were not doing this.

As JPSDK says, think about it from the customer's point of view, and ask yourself why you would want to make things more difficult for customers? If you were a customer, would you really want to read all those different licences? I think a licence should be imposed on Sym, and it could even exclude those explicit photos which Leo and some others want to keep out.

If we are ever going to progress beyond the occasional sale to individuals, we do need a centralised shopping cart. This could actually work out cheaper than individual sales, certainly for us, as Paypal charge us 50 cents for every transaction.

It would be really great of some of the members of MSG who are also customers of the agencies, would look at Symbiostock and give some honest feedback from the buyers point of view.

We've seen what CogentMarketing thinks - not impressed! But that is what we really need to hear, so we can make things better for customers.

Just a few thoughts off the top of my head, please can others join in and point out what's wrong with these ideas, and suggest alternatives.

Symbiostock - SEO & Marketing / Re: Symbiostock Alamy plugin
« on: July 12, 2013, 15:09 »
If you have your method already working, maybe there is no need to edit now?

The advantage with yours is that we can put the 'Similar Images' at the side rather than the bottom of the page; the referral links block goes to the bottom of the sidebar, so it's out of sight if we put similars in the sidebar.

Excellent! Tidier than the method we've been using, so that's a couple of hundred images to edit...  :(

137
I did a search on google images and I saw few of my photos but the problem is that when I click on the image it takes me to a different image on my website. Any idea what can be the issue?

Google probably found the images indexed as 'Similar Images' further down your page.

Is anyone planning to delete their portfolio or deactivate files because of this? I'm considering deactivating some of my best sellers in response to this, but I'm wondering what others doing, if anything.

I've deleted about another 150.  Not big sellers, but ones I've noticed people are prepared to pay a few dollars for.

You should have a page called 'Image Categories' in your page list, which is blank, using the 'Categories Page' template. If you don't have one, just create it and that should work.

140
Well done Ron! We have had a couple of small sales this month, very happy with the way things are going!

141
The more I read the more I start to believe there is a bloody great elephant in the room and IS are trying desperately to cover it up with a pot plant and a chintz tablecloth.

Isn't it depressing and hugely sad that every time IS write something, be it about technical issues, collection changes, pricing overhauls etc, contributors feel compelled to try and read between the lines - because we have lost all trust in our agents these past 2-3 years.

Yes. I keep wondering what they're up to with all the new work that never gets viewed.

Off Topic / Re: Capitalism is the crisis

I caught a bit of this programme and this 3 minute clip is worth watching.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p00z0yb2

I couldn't get this to play, but I like this sentence from the front page:

The crisis comes when the workers dont have enough money to buy what the bosses are trying to sell them.

What puzzles me is why the bosses don't see that, and the inevitable consequences.

I looked at smugmug (and 500px, zenfolio) they just seem overkil and besides I didnt like their pages..i just need a locked gallery where people can like that favourites and I can see which ones they liked.

Purchasing would be nice, option to share on FB/twitter also nice, but mainly just want a nice simple plain proofing page.

How about Coppermine ( http://coppermine-gallery.net/ ) or Zenphoto ( http://www.zenphoto.org/ )? Free, self-hosted and about on a par with Symbiostock for ease of setup. Commenting, rating, password-protected galleries.

Agreeing with others, the site looks excellent! Very nice design.

145
Leo I think you are right to get these systems in. Although I agree that most of our buyers will come in through Google, I don't want explicit images to come up on our site when for instance I put in the keyword beautiful. I don't want to see them myself, and I'd rather they weren't pushed onto potential customers who may just happen to browse. I haven't seen anything yet that bothers me, but the day will come.
As for the quality rating, I quite like that idea. I don't think it's a biggie, but quite nice to have it there, just for the potential browsers.

While we're discussing these matters, it seems to me that it would be good to be able to add a custom header block as well as the current bottom-of-body text to the 'Thank You' email, sufficient to make it a tax invoice. The New Zealand IRD have this to say:

For supplies worth between $50 and $1,000 (including GST), a simplified tax invoice is acceptable. It must clearly show:
  • the words "tax invoice" in a prominent place
  • the name and GST number of the supplier
  • the date the tax invoice was issued
  • a description of the goods and/or services supplied
  • the total amount payable for the supply, and
  • a statement that GST is included.
This could be met by adding a text block at the top of the body and the date of the sale. Sales under $50 need no special documentation but the above would be welcome there as well. Anything over $1000, we'll be happy to raise a manual invoice!

No doubt these additions would be useful for some other countries as well, so if anyone wants to come up with a paid 'customisable email' plugin...

Symbiostock - Technical Support / Customising emails
« on: June 28, 2013, 17:51 »
Has anyone been able to customise their 'Thank You' emails beyond the added text in Symbiostock > Settings ?

I've done some customising to the pre-header area in purchase_thank_you.html but it doesn't appear on the sent email. I want to put enough info on it to make it a legal GST Tax Invoice.

ETA:
Never mind, it's the welcome_template.html that needs to be modified! Next question, how do I make the extra 'Tax Invoice' header appear only on the 'Thank You' email?

148
Just did a sandbox purchase, worked OK with instant emails and successful download..

149
Try out the new version 2.4.6
Also toggling the theme should definitely fix things like the IPN. Please update me on that. There is literally no reason the path should not be updated.

No crash on new page now, but the IPN isn't changing. I set the theme to Twenty Twelve then back to Symbio.

Done with changing the logo. EULA copied. But I am unable to create menu where if I bring my mouse a drop down should popup and I should be able to select the category.
Need further help on
1) I need to create page where all the pictures are listed. basically my portfolio.
2) create a page where all the categories are listed in the form of folders/sets similar to what we see in Flickr etc. I saw few Symbio sites have done that.
3) in the setup, Tinny has mentioned that we need to select "Post" in the settings but I don't see just "Post"
I see post page. I have selected that.

I really like the websites that everyone has created.  Looks so professional. Mine looks like done by 10yr kid. Maybe they can also do a better Job that I

1) is easy, you don't need to create it, it's automatically generated at www.yoursite.com/image/ so you just need a link to that. For an edited portfolio, create a category, say 'portfolio' and assign a bunch of your best to that, then call it from the menu.

2) If you mean something like the front page at http://www.picturemojo.co.nz then that's a set of individually prepared index pics arranged using the Visual Composer plugin with links to categories.

3) Not sure what you're after here.

Keep going, you'll get it sorted in the end!
