I am about to bail on FP. Their business model makes no sense, especially for myself in that I do a lot of RM. I have found RM images on there for $14, which does not make sense at all. It's an uneducated contributor maybe, but also lack of proper steering and guidance from the site principals. The marketing also seems to be non existent. Gave it a try, no sales in over 7 months there, even with a lot of low price RF included. And I can't compete with those dumping 3000 images in because most of my work is illustration these days.

Not total sour grapes though. One day I uploaded a batch of 30, and marked one of them Photo in error. Emailed their support, and not only did reply (in about 15 minutes) and thank me for emailing, but fixed my classification error, then went ahead and approved my whole pending queue.

So great customer service, I just don't know if they have the business expertise to compete properly in a confused marketplace. Have been having problems with the site since their server throwover too.

Doomed to failure, or doomed to attract only the stuff rejected elsewhere.  Sorry.

Very true. There is such a thing as "too cheap".

Yay! have just signed up as I am going to pull the plug on a couple of no hopers!
It can never be worse than Albumo.
And they pay in Euros.

Albumo :D :D :D  5 months and 50 cents in sales with 300 images. I let them have the 50 cents and jumped ship. Didn't care about their "upload bonus" either. I'd be waiting until 2012 for any payout with the traffic they get. I dunno, there was just something that bugged me about that site. So being out is one less thing to worry about.

Yay Euros!

Who knows what goes on in their minds sometimes? Just over the past few days. I had 4 3D renders of cocktails I submistted. In my mind, what was the best one , which is 2 martinis with olives against city lights with awesome reflections, a 3 hour render in radiosity, was rejected for type of photograph.  I already have an order from a local bar for this piece to do wall art with it. The other 3 "similars" (one is one martini, similar lighting, and the other 2 are champagne in a different but similarly lit scene) all went through no problem.

Otherwise, my acceptance there overall has been good. The 2 martini one though, which everyone pretty much gasps at trying to figure out if it's a real photo or digital art, perplexed me. Go figure. Will probably do a re-sub in the future.

Good luck Unce Gene. Onward and upward.

Just checked again - new agency you know, so will check it a few times a day for the first week to get a feel for what goes on there. It's now 2 views, 2 sales  :) 18 files total are online. Well that's certainly never happened before.

So far very good things to say about them, and my approvals have been very quick.

I just started uploading a few to FOT a few days ago. There is one I just uploaded on Thurs, already approved, has one view, and already one sale! Has to be a new record for me.

It is am image of a splash on a pool of chocolate.

Just a note of encouragement for everyone out there. It does happen.

« on: March 21, 2008, 09:44 »
yes... this is what I need. Soon will post some images here.

How do you triger remote flash? With pop-up or another flash unit? I have Nikon SB-600 and do I need another Sb-600 or Sb-800?

You will need a SB 800 to trigger the SB 600.

Also see this link for another diffusion opton

http://www.abetterbouncecard.com/

Do not know what country you are in, but here in the USA the material is called "craft foam" and is readily available in craft stores. My total investment to rig 4 flash units was about $3.
For me better that walking around with a silly sald bowl on top of the flash. Hope this helps.

All of the agencies are tightening up. I noticed the change at IS just about in tandem with when Getty got involved. The rest are beginning to follow suit in drips and drabs.

Similar thread going on at the Fotolia board. Photobucket and Flickr users as the primary offenders.

As a former image buyer for clients, a lot from microstocks, the window dressing is of little value. The last thing I want to do is load yet another plugin. Just give me the stuff upfront, and a search utility that finds stuff quickly and easily.

Serious image buyers and designers, especially under a time crunch, really don't have time to play, or ooh and aah over a fancy slide show.

Not trying to rain on your parade or slam the concept, just my opinion from experience. Hopefully you will retain "standard viewing options" without having to DL a plugin.

My initial app submitted 3/8 accepted today. Now it's time to try and get around their upload process. Seems a bit wonky, but will get through it I am sure.

My initial app submitted 3/8 - still no word. 4 are illustrations and one is a photo in case it makes a difference.

No problem to the regular account for me, but it seems since their server moves a few weeks ago I can't FTP. I only upload small batched so FTP not a huge issue for me. But I have heard others can't log in, or worse yet, get bounced to another account page. There are some notes on the site (look in the left sidebar) about using the flush dns command. Also check their forum.

Shutterstock.com / Re: Flashback of "no flowers"?
« on: March 17, 2008, 21:52 »
UncleGene you've got a point there  :)

"I see the same policy on several sites, does it mean that soon nobody will be able to get flower picture that is not couple years old?..."

A better policy would be, or at least that I would adhere to if I were an editor, is that a great shot is a great shot, period.

The reality of things though is that the flowers are readily available to most, and a very high percentage will be submitted especially by those starting out. To be competitive in the microstock model, the agency needs to offer a variety of goods with a good portion of that subject matter being beyond the bounds and/or capablities of the "company guy who has a camera". The flower shots need to be technically perfect, and should also have that "little bit extra" that makes it unique. Not bashing flower shooters, because I love to do it myself, but I only send in the very best, and even some of those are bounced, so I delegate them for greeting cards etc which I offer to some local stores and some other uses.

One of my orchid shots bounced by shutterstock last year just took a $500 prize in a competition over last summer. Oh well, I guess their policies aren't perfect!  :)

Can anyone share any insight about waiting time initial application reviews at StockXpert? I submitted the requisite batch of 5 last Friday. Nothing back yet except for the boilerplate thank you email.

As a note, I submitted 4 illustrations (not vector) and one photo. In case this makes any difference. Not whining, just wondering so I can do some planning regarding future strategies. Thanks!

I can't guarantee this list will be of specific help, but here it is anyway, since every is always asking for lists.

http://aphotoeditor.com/2008/02/27/stock-photo-agencies/

I don't know of any micro that specializes in nature. In the MS game, nature is not their bread and butter, it is the smiling girl with the telephone headset, the blank house for sale sign, etc. Nature is a tough gig. It is easily accessible for shooters, and the market is flooded. So unless the work is unique, it is a tough sell in micros.

But perhaps this list can get you exploring other options, such as selling choice photos as RM if you find the right place and not even offering them to the micros. Do note, that some of the links are for photographers housing their own inventories. So if anyone here is thinking in that direction, there are some good examples. From these photog sites, they'll usually have their best up front, so you can get a good idea of what is selling in the market.

About the list author - he lists the mcros as "crap" - take it with a grain of salt. It's his opinion is all.

Also do some deeper searches on Goog. I shoot food mainly, and I recently came up with a smaller specialist food agency that I have marked for my own future reference.

I recently disabled an img on DT wanted to delete it as it has been designated for another project. Although the image is out of public view, they still "hold onto it" in what they told me was "liability reasons" or something like that "for a couple of months". No specific timeframe was given to me.

On FP, I have been doing some gallery cleanup there. Deletion takes about 1-3 days, and it's just simply gone after the request, no holding in any of their queues.

On the link the OP supplied, there is at this writing a photo of a solitaire cut diamond with IS watermark. So apparently it is still going on.

Sorry don't know anything further, but the revival of this post was a good reminder for me to get all of my images cleared off of Imageshack. I deleted everything off of my Flickr account a few weeks ago because I just got tired of finding stuff elsewhere even with full watermarks intact. Apparently the unwashed masses do not understand the concept of "no, you can't".

The imageshack stuff was kind of junk really, mostly for old forum posts, but still, ya know?

As far as their users reading and understanding TOS, well, did I mention unwashed masses?

Software - General / Re: Photoshop CS2 or CS3
« on: March 08, 2008, 20:58 »

Aren't updates to the ACR supported cameras available well after the fact?  For example, I got CS2 about 6 months ago, though my 350D was supported by it from the get go, several cameras were not, though the update done while registering brought the product up to date with all the RAW formats on the market.
[/quote]

Not really. The newest cams like Nikon D3 and D300 are only supported in the ACR 4.x versions, which can only be handled by CS3. To me this is stupidity and personally I'm through with the upgrade mania. Keeping CS2, and have switched to Bibble for Raw processing. As I sometimes do retouch for other photogs, it is important for me to keep current with raw processors.

Another cost effective option for those starting out is to just get PS Elements. Current versions will support the new cams, and Elements has grown up a lot as far as features. Although I would just personally like to do what I want to do straight away instead of having to be asked stupid questions by dummied up software.

Lightroom another good option for RAW currency, although have not used it since the inital release.

As fas as having to upgrade to CS3 for features, there is little if anything new that I want or need.

I recently got an account cancelled at Albumo without any hassles. After rereading their terms and seeing that an account coud in theory be cancelled at any time, I just wrote them a polite email, saying I just did not have time to maintain. They never replied to the request, but on random checks of the account, I found that after about 4-5 days my login no longer worked, and all of my blog links promoting my pics showed blank pages.

I was just not happy with the traffic there. As I shoot mainly food, I was dismayed that the top selling food image had 53 downloads in Sept and still had 53 downloads in January. With about 280 images online there, I had one sale for $ .50 in Feb.

My time for micros is limited, and I would really just reather stick with a few select places that are worth my effort. Albumo just became another upload and check chore with little benefit to me.
