Here is the first of three rejections I just got today from BS:

Lou OATES,

Sorry, but an image you submitted was not approved at Bigstock :

Quality Control: EXPOSURE ISSUE

Thank you,

Bigstock Approvers

The three that were rejected today were submitted OVER TWO YEARS AGO.
And, yes, indeed, all three were accepted back then at the other sites.

And when did the "inspectors" become "approvers"?

Bigstock.com / To pull the plug at BigStock or not...?
« on: October 14, 2011, 21:23 »
I'm determined to stay with a site only if it is worth continuing with my current level (very low) of uploads. So far I've deleted all but IS, SS, DT, and Veer accounts.   If Veer was older I would have pulled that plug a year ago but I've stayed with them longer due to some occasional hot streaks that, hopefully will continue.

Big Stock is just not selling for me and shows no improvement I can see.

Anyone here have any reason I don't know about that BS will suddenly improve?

New Sites - General / Yet another...
« on: September 29, 2011, 09:34 »
Dear Mr. Lou Oates

Hello.
My name is Momoko Nagai and I work for PIXTA, the company operates a micro stock photo website.
Now, about 89,000 of creators have been selling their about 2,000,000 of images on PIXTA (http://pixta.jp/).
Although our website is only in Japanese for now, our clients number is going up.
And English version will be released in this year, so after that, I think we could be able to get bigger number of client certainly.

Mainly we stock images created by Japanese many kind of creators for now.
However we also would like to stock all kinds of image to get more clients than now we have.
Could you let us deal in your images?
This is a great opportunity for not only us and you, because if you let us deal in your images,
your images would be conspicuous on our website since we do not have enough images like your taste.

And as the additional step, if you would be our content partner, you could
get so many advantages like higher commission rate.
If you have further inquiries, please check our guideline on our website, the
address is here;

http://pixta.jp/tool/pixta_cpguideline.pdf

And if you have any interest in our service or system, please e-mail us.
We will show you more information.

Thank you.

Best regards,
Momoko Nagai

In response to a tidal wave of negative microstock comments on another photography blog site I said that there were still thousands of folks who were making a living at microstock. This, of course, let loose a barrage of attack comments on all things microstock. I can't find any actual numbers to rely on to back up my estimates. I had said that I thought there were some 70-90,000 microstock contributors and that it wasn't a stretch to estimate that several thousand were "making a living at it".

What's your opinion?

General Stock Discussion / Yay -- At least one site with class
« on: February 28, 2011, 11:11 »
With all the negative comments about dealing with micro sites lately it was heartening to receive this email from Jan at Yay. It was in response to my email canceling my account there due to disappointing nearly non-existing sales from my portfolio. I also requested I be paid for the accrued commissions dating from the site's beginning. Within days my account was closed and my commission amount was in my PayPal account. Thought I'd pass along this happy feedback to start the week.

Hi Lou,

I'm sorry to hear that you want to delete your account. Before I can delete your account, however, I need a confirmation from you. That is just for security reasons. Please just answer this email.

Usually we don't do payouts lower that 30, but since you've been a positive contributor to us since the very beginning - I'll personally make sure you receive your earnings.

Have a nice day!

Best regards,
Jan

A year from now we all will look back on this thread and wonder how woefully shortsighted we were. Or how stupidly farsighted we were to ever think that THAT could actually happen.

Anyhow, here are the first of my predictions. Feel free to jump in with yours.

1. Lens-less cameras will either be on the market or hints will be flying in the blog-o-spheres. Sorry, lens makers, get your research folks working on those logarithms now if they aren't already.

2. The remaining film and chemical based school darkrooms will shut off their safe lights for good.

3. Kodachrome processing technology will return from the dead. Some entrepreneur will buy rights and equipment to continue the processing for another few years.

4. Micro stock photography will enjoy an upswing in sales due to the current upswing in the economy and the outsourcing of more image resources.

Just got this. Sorry I won't waste my time commenting further.

Hi lou ,

My name is Noah and I am the marketing manager here at AudioMicro. We currently specialize in stock music and sound effects sales and licensing. Over the course of the past 2+ years we have built a very successful business in this market and have just begun development on a new site for stock photos.

We love your work so just wanted to reach out to see if you would have any interest in contributing to the new site/platform? We will handle all of the ingest/uploading of your images and pay out directly to paypal once live.

The site is currently under full steam development and we expect to be in operation and ready to sell stock photos by February.

We have a vast amount of experience in SEO, developing web traffic etc,
and are confident that if we get some great contributors we will build a very successful stock photos site.

Let me know your thoughts/if you would be interested in contributing to a new stock photo site, and at any rate thanks a bunch for taking the time to read this. I hope all is well for you and yours.

Cheers,

NB

Veer / Finally...some decent sales
« on: October 08, 2010, 16:51 »
I've been very negative about Veer this last year due to horrible sales, at least for my images. But the last few weeks have brought some very nice sales. Not up to SS or IS but certainly more than I expected. So, whatever they're doing lately I hope they keep doing it. I've even started to upload there again.

Us micro-stock folks aren't the only photographers being scammed.

A friend of mine sent me this link to his site that deals with how thieves are stealing from other photographers via email. Nice outline of danger signs:

Newbie Discussion / Odd huge view count on IS...??
« on: July 01, 2010, 10:04 »
I hate to start a string on such a minor (I think) topic but I just had an extraordinary view count on an image I just uploaded to IS. Normal views for my images are around, maybe, a dozen to two dozen the first week. This one had 317 views the first TWO DAYS!! And it's no big deal, super unusual shot. Item 13434843 if you really want to see it.

Anyone else had such a large view count the first few days? And did it result in good long term sales?

I've had no sales so far with this one.

??

Veer / Dash for what???
« on: June 27, 2010, 14:20 »
Last 3 months, 300 of my best images on line = 0 sales.
What's not going on here?

Just a rant on my part that IS still can't read my IPTC data via Mac OSX 10.6.2  and CS4 Photoshop. They sent me nearly the same response as they did over a year ago:

Thank you very much for your message.

We appreciate the frustration of the meta data not being read consistently. The error is not happening for everyone, even when they use similar processes and software.

Our team continues to work on this issue.

Sincerely,

Tina

It is truly not worth the effort for me to re-enter all the data...even for IS.

Shutterstock.com / Up surge in your SS On Demand sales?
« on: July 24, 2009, 12:45 »
For some reason my On Demand sales have spiked to over half of my sub sales this month. Anybody have the same "problem"?
Maybe new marketing there? Or just a bump in the road? I hope it keeps up.

Dreamstime.com / Spelling rejections very strange
« on: March 25, 2009, 09:51 »
Is this a new rejection for anyone?:

Reason: - There are misspelled words in the title, description and/or keywords of your image OR the info submitted is in a language other than English...

Example: File named "FerrisWheel" was rejected although all the spelling was correct in the description and keywords.

This could be a major problem for all who upload to DT with abbreviations or numbers in the file titles. I haven't heard back from DT support about this new wrinkle.

StockXpert.com / Better check your new images: Search still broken
« on: December 10, 2008, 19:21 »
I've had 0 views on new images accepted after November 8. Plus the images can't be found with keywords. They just show up in my image portfolio.

They said they were "working on it" last week. So far, no workie.

Better check yours.

Yaymicro / Any news at all about this sales-challenged site?
« on: September 26, 2008, 16:45 »
Yay has been strangely quiet in the news/promotion area for some time. Looking at my best 270 images with zero sales in months I'd have to conclude that someone has pulled the plug on this site. Yet their blog and forum are both active.

Has anyone received any news at all about Yay?

iStockPhoto.com / Keyword craziness at iStock?
« on: September 23, 2008, 16:08 »
Can anyone make sense of this keyword rejection with this image of a lone football goal post? I can't. I've had several goofy keyword rejections lately but none to top this one.

We regret to inform you that we cannot accept your submission, entitled Football goal post ( http://www1.istockphoto.com/file_thumbview_approve/7226776/2/istockphoto_7226776-football-goal-post.jpg) for addition to the iStockphoto library for the following reasons:

The following keywords used for this file do not appear to be fully relevant to the subject.

{[ American Football (Team Sport),  Sport,  Competition,  Competition,  Sport]}

The keywords used for this file do not appear to be fully relevant to the subject.

Under the new controlled vocabulary system that we now use, images need fewer keywords to do well in searches. The site handles translations and synonyms, so you do not have to.

General Stock Discussion / Another new micro site...

General Stock Discussion / About to SNAP awake?
« on: March 15, 2008, 10:57 »
You might want to check out SnapVillage's blog about their new marketing. Seems like the giant in the room has wakened.

I'm glad I spent some time last month uploaded 200+ images. The advertising that they're talking about seems to dwarf most of the efforts of the sites on the right.
