General Stock Discussion / Re: Check Out PicturEngine
« on: May 25, 2012, 20:32 »
Anyone remember Lucky Oliver?
There have been no shortage of new entries into microstock, most with some new wrinkle or other that promises a better outcome for contributors. I confess I used to join the flock in wasting lots of time uploading images with the hope that this is the one that will really be a winner.
I've since learned to limit the wasted time by sitting on the sidelines and checking back here occasionally to see if anyone is actually selling anything on the new sites.

52
I suppose I'm punishing all the agencies by not uploading to any of them any longer. I'm quite content to sit back, check my balances, and submit for payouts from time to time. More time to do more of the shooting I enjoy. My last image upload to microstock was about a year ago.

53
Yes, I uploaded them somewhat over two years ago and this was the first time I heard about what happened to them.  Maybe the cleaning crew found them under a desk.

54
Here is the first of three rejections I just got today from BS:

Lou OATES,

Sorry, but an image you submitted was not approved at Bigstock :

Photo Name:   Balloons_3d
Photo ID:     1414205
Your User ID:
Approvers Comments:

Quality Control: FOCUS ISSUE
Quality Control: EXPOSURE ISSUE

Thank you,

Bigstock Approvers

The three that were rejected today were submitted OVER TWO YEARS AGO.
And, yes, indeed, all three were accepted back then at the other sites.

And when did the "inspectors" become "approvers"?

I wonder why nobody has mentioned the constant maintenance of PCs with anti-virus fixes and third party system-cleaning software. Not having to worry about those issues is worth lots to me.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Fotolia Survey
« on: May 04, 2012, 12:19 »
I closed my account there over a year ago and have received no info or survey from them yet. I wouldn't have participated anyway. Wouldn't want to waste any more time with them.

57
Right on Race! Most of the folks who made money promoting non-payment of taxes to the slow-witted are in jail. Good for them.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Adobe CS6... How is it?
« on: May 02, 2012, 19:12 »
I just got the CS5 suite a couple months ago.  Can I upgrade just photoshop or will they make me upgrade the whole package?

Since I also use Dreamweaver often I hope the update is for the whole suite.

Will new entrants to this business with absolutely no unique selling proposition ever cease? At least they didn't email me with one of those "We love your work..." pitches.

PicturEngine is by Justin Brinson (http://www.linkedin.com/in/justinbrinson).

He also owns:

1.  http://www.pornstockphoto.com - Porn Stock Photo
2.  http://www.picturenginegroup.com - PicturEngine group
3.  http://www.gstockphoto.com - G Stock Photo
4.  http://www.thebrinsongroup.com - The Brinson Group
5.  http://www.cornerhousestock.com - Corner House Stock
6.  http://www.genericstockphoto.com
7.  http://www.mybigfind.com - My Big Find
8.  http://www.cornerhousestockphoto.com - Corner House Stock Photo
9.  http://www.picturesque.com/ - Picturesque

The interesting thing here is the marketing of various stock categories as separate web sites. May do well (scoring higher) in finding specific images through Google searches.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Strange refund
« on: April 19, 2012, 19:41 »
Hey, all you folks quit yer bellyachin', IS just refunded ME:

FileID         Amount Paid     Correct Amount   Difference         Date
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
0003740993          $00.23               $00.24             $00.01        1/27/2012
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Total Amount Paid: $0.01

Now if I could just figure out where to spend it all.

62
I would think you'd figure out a way to at least OFFER something for a price on a free site beyond the click-throughs.

1. Photoshop tutoring for a fee
2. Image editing -- customizing/optimizing the free image for a fee
3. CD with all your images for a fee
4. Other of your talents

My top seller is my best seller on IS, SS, DT.

Most veteran folks here as well as newbies overlook one of the great perks of microstock. I discovered it by accident simply by uploading less than six images in the entire 2011 period and less than 24 images in all of 2010.

The perk: THE INCOME KEEPS COMING IN just by sitting on one's fat behind. The only work I do is check the sites occasionally and request payouts when they reach the payout threshold. Common knowledge here is that your income would dry up rather quickly because of the new images streaming in by the tens of thousands. What I've found is that my best, say, 25 or 30 images (out of 600+ per site), keep pulling in about the same sales month after month. The mediocre ones (5-10 per year) keep plodding along also at about that rate. The lousy ones still suck.

I scratch my head at this continuing income stream. Must be my superior shooting or flawless key-wording.

Your time is valuable.

We spend hundreds of hours of our time screening and selecting only the most dramatic, eye-catching, interesting images.

You save not only money - but time! - at UnusualStockPhoto.com.

We don't have the same boring day-to-day images you will commonly find on other sites.  Looking for a "Wow! Look at that!" photo for your latest project?  Save time.  Save money.  Get results with our attention-grabbing images.  Register for a Free account today and get started!

It's odd to see that "hundreds of hours" yielded 45 images. Not that's a tough inspector!

I love the name of the site. But to launch a site publicly with so few images makes you wonder about the marketing.

66
Knowing the way government operates I fear that photographers will soon need to submit a psychiatric release proving that selling images for pennies is not a mental disability that buyers are taking advantage of.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Online Backup
« on: February 20, 2012, 22:48 »
I have a 4TB HD on my desk as a Time Machine backup disk plus another 4TB HD in my safe that I update every few months. Super fast, easy, and cheap. I would never rely upon anybody else for backups. Maybe I'm just paranoid.

General Stock Discussion / Re: How things change
« on: February 15, 2012, 18:23 »
Sales for me are declining rapidly at IS but much less so at SS and DT. Considering that over the last two years I've uploaded LESS THAN 12 new images to those sites, I'm pleased with the income per hour spent.
I can't imagine anyone putting much effort into uploading with the track record and site antics I've seen over the last few years. Happily I don't need income from this segment so I'll be just sitting here watching the revenue from past work roll in. Maybe someday the income return on the work invested won't seem too bad.

Since I'm the only model in my ports I'm not too concerned about the sensitive part. I've been used on prison matter websites and foreign non-prescription steroid websites for years. Once in a while a relative or friend will mention that they saw me as a doctor or dentist somewhere. But no dire consequences so far. I'd probably opt out if I had other models as I wouldn't want to subject them to any of the potential problems mentioned on this subject.

I agree that current quality is FAR better than when I started in microstock about six years ago.
I attribute much of my improvement in image technical quality to the microstock industry. As nutty as rejections often are they catch, reject, and therefore educate us in ways not so obvious to those without such experience.
I rarely upload anymore due to my increasing work load supplying my galleries and to the decreasing revenue from microstock. But I'm still appreciative of microstock for the education.

72
The best way is to do your own homework. See what's in the galleries in your area. Ask questions there, not here where we have no idea what's good in your location.

73
I got this email this morning also. It looks like they probe the other sites mentioned by WaterView for potential participants. I'm just not interested in another possible, possible, possible, potential, maybe, maybe outlet. I may be just a bit jaded after getting so many invitations from new micro-stock ventures.

Hi,

I had a look at your fineartamerica-portfolio site and your website
and would like to get in touch regarding a print on demand
cooperation for our second premium art print site

ARTFLAKES .com.

We are located in Berlin and sell art print reproductions mainly in
Germany, UK, France. We are not a service for designers,
illustrators, photographers, we are only interested in a license
cooperation with you.
Means: partnership doesnt cost anything, we only earn money when
you earn money (from us).

Could this be generally interesting for you? Then I would send some
further information.

I am looking forward to hearing from you!

Have a nice weekend!

Best from Berlin,
Martin Thesen

I can't imagine a worse idea than lawmakers getting involved in any internet protection scheme. Next step is probably taxing internet traffic to "pay" for the huge bureaucracy necessary to enforce whatever transgressions are imagined by politicians.
Leave it wild and wooly. I'd rather gargle razor blades than see nanny-state protectionists involved.

I've come to the conclusion that I can never organize my hundreds of thousands of digital images any better. I know they are there, lurking somewhere in four different 4 Terabyte external drives as well as in three internal hard drives. I have a few dozen folders that hold all my current best selling images. And I do name each image descriptively such as "Superstition Mountain 64x16 OptShrpMat".  So with a Mac Spotlight search I can type part of a file's name and find most stuff fairly quickly. And don't get me started on DUPLICATES!!!
