They tried that for a few days once before where buyers had to leave a comment. I had all sorts of random one word comments from buyers that just put in anything so that they could proceed with the download.
Yes, I remember that. But if done right, it seems to me that ratings and reviews could be a good thing. They work pretty well on Amazon.

Anyway, it's good to see DT trying something (sort of) new. And as for DT going downhill, as mentioned in a couple of posts, not in my book. DT is about the only site where I still get a BME once in a while.

EL or ED who cares - but they have been stingy with E's of late...
Yes, I used to get several ELs per month but I have had only one since August.  In the SS forum thread linked to by ruxpriencdiam, Susan wondered if OFFSET could be competing with SS and hurting our sales. People posted that they didn't think so. But if the onset of OFFSET is going to hurt us, it would seem that maybe the ELs are the first place we would see a decline?  :-\

Illustration - General / Re: What is best program?
« on: October 03, 2013, 23:51 »
I started with Inkscape, learned the basics of vector by using it then moved to Adobe Illustrator.
Good advice if you want to do vectors. I learned vectors by using the pen tool in Photoshop, then I moved to Adobe Illustrator.
If you want to do raster 3D illustrations instead of or in addition to vector, you will need a 3D program such as Blender, which is free, or Autodesk 3DS Max or Maya which are very expensive but are the choice of most professionals.

I suspect that ppl are more likely to vote in the poll when their results for the month are better than expected. But when results are disappointing ppl don't feel like voting. This could cause swings in the results to be more drastic, but the poll would still reflect the up and down trends.

Veer / Re: Veer's New Direction
« on: September 26, 2013, 23:24 »
I  feel I should put in a good word for Veer, as I am on a pace to have my second best month ever there in Sept, and Aug was good too, earning over $100 for me. Whatever Veer is doing that's new, I like it.  ;D

For multiple hundreds of dollars per sale I might be ok with the borrow before you buy, but no for 38 cents or a handful of dollars.
Yes. Maybe I am misunderstanding something, but if a big company wants full-sized comps from a microstock agency, wouldn't they just buy a subscription?  :-\

General Stock Discussion / Re: Fonts and microstock..
« on: September 12, 2013, 21:43 »
...Normally you are not allowed to redistribute the font or present it in editable form. Obviously that does not apply to photographs or 3d renders but may apply sometimes to 3d models and editable vectors.

There are lots of great font sites including Font Squirel, Font Spring Etc etc. Typically you will need to read the licence conditions for the particular font you are
This is correct.
You can use fonts in your stock images if you have a license to do so.
If you have a legal copy of Windows, you can use the fonts which come with it, such as Arial. But remember that these fonts are designed to look good in documents on computer monitors. They don't look so good in graphics.
If you have a legal copy of an Adobe software which includes Myriad Pro, then you have a license to use it in your stock images. But, as bhr says, you must convert it to outlines if you are doing vectors.

Fontsquirrel.com has lots of fonts which are free to use in your commercial images. So does dafont.com.  Just remember to see what licenses you get, some fonts are not free for commercial use.

fonts.com myfonts.com fontspring.com veer.com all sell thousands of fonts. So does Adobe. Also check out cheapprofonts.com where fonts are $10.

As for the font faces themselves, I get a lot of use out of Minion pro for a classy book-like look. Garamond is good too. Bodoni has a 'money' look to it.
I use Helvetica for signs. There are so many thousands of good fonts it's hard to pick out a few. IMO it is worth it to spend a little money to get a good font, instead of a free one which doesn't look good and is hard to work with (although there are many good free ones). Font foundries are creatives like us and they should be paid for what they make.

Yes, the bad 'similars' rejections have been costing DT a lot of money for a long time. I wonder why they don' fix it.
What I really don't like at DT is their well known "similars" policy...
...In one of the batches, they accepted a calendar in English but rejected 3 in German, Portuguese and Turkish languages. All four were completely different designs. Resubmitting didn't change the result.

Strange...

Veer / Re: Veer contributor upload tool updates
« on: September 11, 2013, 22:36 »
I just uploaded a few images (some vectors, some JPGs) using the browser upload and it went fine, like normal. (And maybe I am just lucky, but my sales at Veer have been good lately.)

186
I too quit uploading a few months ago after they rejected around 90% with the reason "Though technically sound we don't want it" <--paraphrasing.  My upload limit never increased when they took it down to 25 a week.  Though I remember someone saying recently that theirs went up.

I don't know what's going on there but it's not good.
I wouldn't give up on them yet. Like with you, they suddenly started rejecting most of my images, and I stopped uploading. Then after a few months I submitted a few, and they were accepted. So I started uploading the backlog I had from the months of not submitting, and most were accepted.

Veer still rejects some - inexplicably and at random - but I had a very good August there, probably because I have so many new images.

187
Only thing i've noticed is DT increased the upload limit.
I suspect this is due to so many ex-IS exclusives uploading their ports.

Just a normal weekday at SS for me. Although my sales have been up by about 15% in the last 2 wks, as summer comes to an end.

One new thing: On my Earnings by Date page and my Earnings Summary page, ads are appearing in the margins. Some for banks where I have credit cards, and one ad for Veer. I don't remember that happening before.

189
This is always a difficult question. Some good answers here but I guess no one knows the best answer, including me. I make illustrations for niche concepts, so I expect my images to be found over the years by keywords, so their getting buried isn't as big a problem for me as for others perhaps. So I tend to just submit them as soon as they are finished.

One thing, in the years I have been doing microstock (since 2005) the official end of the summer slump seems to be the first week after school starts back in the US. IMO that would be the time to start uploading again if you have been waiting.

GLStock / Re: Somebody get the crash cart - GL has flatlined!
« on: August 09, 2013, 23:21 »
I just requested a payout at GL. Made about $30 each in June and July. So it's definitely still worth submitting their IMO. Microstock has a lot of ups and downs, who knows when something might come along which helps GL as much as the Google image search hurt them? In the meantime, I'm not giving up on them.

191
123RF and Bigstock are not really low earners for me. Of the sites which are 'Low Earners' in the Microstock Poll Results, CanStockPhoto is by far the best for me, although sales there were way down last month and, like sales at Veer, GL and CC, have been down since the Google image search change.  :'(

As for VS, I would like to put my whole port up there but I agree, prices are too low.

Maybe he is just telling us that they are aware of the problem so we shouldn't email them about it. I just submitted 5 jpgs and it seemed to work ok. But if I were SS, I would hesitate to come on here and say, 'It's all fixed.' Because you never know.

New Sites - General / Re: Instagram Stock Photo Site
« on: July 30, 2013, 23:41 »
In a WSJ article a while back a US official was quoted saying that China's theft of US technological IP is the biggest illegal transfer of wealth in the history of the world. Second biggest is probably google using the content of millions of copyright owners' to make billions in profits for itself.

Google wants to destroy our copyrights (while defending its own patents and trademarks, of course).

it's the new fad in startups : monetizing any possible user generated content no matter if it will infringe copyright or cause legal troubles.

youtube is the undisputed king in piracy and it's still there, untouchable, and actually making some small profits too.
yesterday i've seen videos with whole albums of a famous band and nobody complains, it seems even the majors gave up the fight on youtube, and what about entire movies being available there at decent resolution ?

if google can steal with impunity, why should everybody else play a fair game ?

194
I agree with many of the posts above, and I would add:
-They treat all of their contributors equally
-When something goes wrong, they admit it, tell the truth about the cause, and fix it
These things can also be said about some of the other good sites, no doubt. But they cannot be said of that site which used to be number one and now looks to be in the process of completing its self destruction.

Shutterstock.com / Re: Is it just me?
« on: July 13, 2013, 00:47 »
The first 12 days of July should not have been typical. For one thing, so far July has had 10 weekdays and only two weekend days, which should help the sales total a lot. On the other hand, the first week included Independence Day in the US.

As for me, so far July at SS is a little down  :P

« on: July 13, 2013, 00:41 »
My story is quite boring and I am not a video maker...
Unfortunately, this describes me also. But $25k is tempting and SS's video promoting the contest is inspiring. However, the first person to comment on the post and announce his intention to compete is Mike Ledray. I would have no hope of topping his story.

123RF / Re: Uploading not working???

Today I submitted 5 eps images and 5 jpgs to 123RF and it seems to have succeeded perfectly, no problems. And I like the new interface.

Savadee kup. I just logged on to Fotolia and contacted support about your problem and gave them a link to your post. You might post here when your problem is solved so that more people don't send them messages. Good luck.

Dreamstime.com / Re: Have DT sales slumped?
« on: July 05, 2013, 14:34 »
...summer slump does appear to be a factor everywhere.
Yes,
-the onset of the summer slump
-the changes in the Google image search
-the exodus of ex-IS exclusives to SS, DT, etc
seem to be making for a year-over-year bad month. Remember the old days when everyone was active on the IS forum, and all changes in sales trends were always caused by 'ebb and flow'? Maybe we will have more flow and less ebb in the autumn, I hope so.

...Is there a specific copyright purchase form anyone knows of  :-\
A copyright purchase agreement is a very simple and common legal form. Just google "copyright purchase agreement" and you should find where to get one.
