Actually, they belong to my wife. Just thought it was a funny headline. One of my bigger scores from Alamy. Love that agency.

Adobe Stock / Fotolia Gotcha
« on: July 19, 2012, 11:22 »
I was uploading today, and for the first time I see a new field called Choose Your Contract. The default is set to Exclusive to Fotolia? - Yes. And....If your file is declined by our editors, can we place it in the Fotolia free section? - Yes.

Anybody else seeing this?   Kind of presumptive on their part.

Dreamstime.com / Upload Problem at Dreamstime?
« on: December 29, 2011, 08:56 »
My last two uploads at Dreamstime have failed to show up un the Unfinished area. I've uploaded them several times and got the Upload Successful window. The first one finally showed up (once) after 24 hours. The second one has not shown up after 24 hours and three attempts. Seems like they use to show up within 2 hours. Anybody else see this?

Shutterstock.com / Limited Commercial Value Rejection.
« on: August 15, 2011, 08:58 »
I posted this on their forum:

I would like to call for an end to the Limited Commercial Value rejection. As a contributor and buyer for many years, that specializes in isolated objects, I know what sells. I know that everyday objects, isolated, and photographed well, are much sought after. I've done very well here and on all of the top eight microstock sites selling such objects.

Within the last few months, I've been getting this rejection for the first time, even when the same photo is accepted and sells on the other top seven agencies. Obviously Shutterstock has undergone a shakeup in the reviewing process. The rejection email gives a link to Shutterbuzz, that tries to explain "the most commonly questioned reason of all for submitters" It goes on to explain that the reviewers are well trained and that they are artists and photographers themselves. Therein lies the flaw for this kind of rejection. They are not in marketing. They may well know technical merits, but not have clue as to what buyers are looking for. It's a different side of the brain. Artistry versus Marketing.

Therefore, I respectfully call for the end of this kind of rejection, and stick to judging a photo on it's artistry and technical merit, and not speculating on what the graphic community is hunting for. As a buyer, I can testify that you just never know what the next project is going to require.

iStockPhoto.com / PNG Format: a Game Changer?
« on: May 10, 2011, 09:29 »
iStock has announced the acceptance of uploads in the PNG format in the near future. I anticipate that this will be a game changer for the microstock industry. Since the PNG format has the ability to contain an alpha channel, this will provide a whole new way to load isolations. The upload requirements are yet to be determined, but for designers looking to easily drop an isolated object into their project, this will be the way to go. If iStock is the only site to offer this format, I can see a large advantage over all of the other sites.

Another advantage for PNG, over JPEG, is that it is lossless. So even if your file doesn't contain an isolation, the quality will be so much better than sites that offer the same file only in the JPEG format.

I predict that this will be the way of the future. What do you think?

General Stock Discussion / Clipping Paths and Microstock
« on: January 11, 2011, 16:37 »
I include clipping paths with about 80% of my photo submissions. I also include that the photo is "isolated with a clipping path" in the title, and the description field.

I just got a note, from someone at Dreamstime, that clipping paths are only included in the largest size. That kind of makes my description misleading, and I intend to reword my descriptions to note that.

My question is what other sites (of the top eight) eliminate clipping paths for all but the largest size?

Dreamstime.com / Dreamstime Keyword Problem?
« on: November 19, 2010, 11:07 »
I notice that Dreamstime's upload window has changed. On my last upload, my keyword metadata didn't carry over and I had to manually re-enter all my keywords. Loaded fine on all other sites.

Anyone else have this problem?
I'm on a Mac.

I had a customer contact me asking why he had to buy my photos, when they are offered for free at a website called free-extras.com. Sure enough, there they were. I tried contacting the website, but the contact email is not a valid email address. Any ideas what my options are? These photos are for sale on the Big 7 microstocks.

These are the photos:

General Stock Discussion / Clipping Path Lie?
« on: March 11, 2010, 10:06 »
Can anyone identify if any of the top 9 sites remove my clipping paths? I include the term in my titles and descriptions, because I know designers are more apt to choose a photo that is less work for them to isolate. I've read that SS used to remove them, but now includes them.

I don't want to claim my photos have one, if the stock site removes it.

Veer / Veer Lapse in Security
« on: December 13, 2009, 15:31 »
I went to upload a photo on Veer, and was suddenly taken to another member's Homepage. My upload appeared on his Workspace, so I clicked on Put Back. But I also had access to all of his photos, settings, & secure information. Of course that meant that I no longer had access to my Homepage. So I decided to Sign out, and then Sign in again. Now everything seems to be back to normal. While I had access to the other member's info, I got his email address, and notified him of the problem. That was weird!

General Stock Discussion / What Happens When You Die?
« on: August 24, 2009, 07:57 »
I know....you go to heaven. But what happens in regard to your microstock accounts? My wife knows how to check the numbers, and what steps to go through, to request payments. but what about taxes? What happens when a microstock site tries to withhold taxes, and is informed that the contributer is dead? Are there any steps I should take, to insure my wife can continue to collect payments. BTW, my wife's last name is different than mine.

General Stock Discussion / Proof of Ownership
« on: August 04, 2009, 13:26 »
I was driving by a restaurant, in my area, and noticed that one of my stock photos was being used on banners, and on the menus as a logo. It's a picture of Guava, and the name of the restaurant is "Guava". I asked the owner where he got the image, and he said that his designer found it on the internet. I informed him that I was the photographer, and he agreed that if indeed I was the photographer, he would be willing to pay a licensing fee. I have since sent him a contact sheet of the original photo shoot, along with photos of the layers of the stem and leaves used for the photoshop composite.
He has now sent me an email stating that he received the prints, but still has not received any copyright documentation constituting ownership or the ability/right to sell the artwork. I'm stumped. How do I prove ownership?

Having just watched some of Yuri Arcurs' amazing videos, I am struck how anybody can make a profit shooting models, for microstock. Doing the math, you pay a professional model around $200 an hour, and that doesn't include makeup and hair. And, a lot of shots include 4, 5, or 6 models. So say 6 x $200 = $1200, plus the cost of hair and makeup for 6 models. Plus , a lot of model agencies require at least a 2 hour minimum. So now, the cost doubles to $2400 for just the models. And then one photo only sells for $1? How many photos do you have to sell, from that 2 hour shoot, before you start showing a profit? 2400? It's not adding up!
Can somebody, who shoots professional models for microstock, explain how they show a profit? Is my math completely off?

Shutterstock.com / New Login Stinks
« on: May 19, 2009, 07:14 »
It looks like Shutterstock has incorporated a new login procedure that forces us to type in a worded code. (13 letters long!) This stinks, and is completely user unfriendly. I'm on a Mac, and have the ability to automatically log in, to all of the stock agencies on my keychain. But Shuttersock now prevents that. Come on Shuttersock, what's the  point? What's next? Provide a photo ID, at log in? A fingerprint? In my opinion, this is security overkill.

iStockPhoto.com / Pay as you go?
« on: April 15, 2009, 21:00 »
I was doing a search for Granola, on iStock, to see if one of my photos showed up. it showed up on about the 4th page, but there was a little flag above it. When I moused over the flag, it said "This photo available as pay as you go only". What does that mean? I don't recall checking any box like that.

Crestock.com / Crestock Search Engine?
« on: January 22, 2009, 10:13 »
I posted this question to Crestock, but maybe someone here, can answer it.

I'm surprised that some of my best earning images aren't doing as well here. So I started doing searches of some of the foods that have been in my portfolio, for a year, and found that none of my photos turned up. Searches for "peach", "rosemary", and "red onion", "tamarinds", "toy blocks", and more, are not revealing any of my photos. Is this a keyword issue? For instance, when an obscure food like Tamarinds, is searched the result is "0 matches" even though that's the title of my photo. The word "tamarind" is not one of my keywords. So, it appears that your search engine does not include the title of the photo. Is there a way to go back into my keyword selections and add the title of photo?

Newbie Discussion / Payout Requests in General
« on: December 17, 2008, 08:26 »
I see that some sites pay out monthly, and some require that you request a payout. So what happens if you never request a payout? The reason I ask, is because I neglected to monitor my earnings at FeaturePics,  and they went ahead and sent my earnings to my PayPal account, once it reached over $250.

Do any other sites do this? Are there any sites that will never send money until a payout is requested? At what limit do they automatically  send money, just to clear the books?
