Building a personal site is easy using Photoshelter or Smugmug. They have templates, and you just upload your photos.

Driving traffic to your site..That's the hard part!

I've played with it a little. You can open a layered PSD file in it and all of the layers are there. Pretty impressive. It performs most of the key functions of Photoshop. The problem for me, is I've spent the last ten years learning Photoshop, and there isn't room in my brain to relearn the idiosyncrasies of a similar program.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Distortion acceptable

Shooting tabletop with a wide angle will produce distortion. I shoot all of my tabletop stuff with Canon EF 100mm, f/2.8 Macro lens. There is zero distortion. Here's an example of something shot at a similar angle to your shot:

Latest email:

Dear Danny,

In a continuing effort to improve Shutterstocks experience for our contributors, we launched an updated version of the automatic email that informs you of the review results from your last batch. Unfortunately, some of our contributors may have received the email more than once or not at all, which might have caused some confusion. Additionally, we found an error that also caused some of our contributors to receive this email for batches that were submitted in 2014.

We are working to quickly resolve this issue, and we appreciate your patience in our ongoing effort to improve your Shutterstock experience.

Best regards,

I've spent a half hour with it just learning my way around.  Very impressive!  I do miss Auto-Align Layers and Auto-Merge Layers, so useful for stacking, which I use a lot. I put in a feature request.

Do you covert the highest res JPEG version to TIffs, if we want to sell TIFFs.
Or, are we supposed to upload a Tiff version and you convert them to different size JPEGs?

If you want to sell Tiffs the original Tiff file must be uploaded. From that it's converted to different resolution Jpegs.

Okay, but it looks like the metadata doesn't travel with Tiff uploads. If I include a Clipping Path, with my Tiff, will it still be there for the downloads?

Good news!

"Thank you for all of your questions regarding submit notes. We are working on providing the answers in one post that will go up tomorrow.

Prior to that post going live, we wanted to address one of the specific concerns regarding the resubmission process. If you received a rejection (pertaining to quality, metadata, releases, etc) and you would like to resubmit a corrected version you are welcome to do that without contacting our support department prior to resubmission. If you are continually receiving rejections that you do not agree with then you should contact support prior to resubmitting any further. Our support department will look into your inquiry and respond accordingly."

Thanks,
Paul.

If you've made corrections couldn't it be considered a new submission?  Has anybody been scolded for resubmitting without getting permission first?

From Shutterstock:

Possible Reasons for Receiving Warnings
1. Submitting more than one of the same exact image

2. Keyword spamming (using the same keywords for unrelated images)

3. Frequent miscategorization

4. Large amounts of out-of-focus or noisy photos in a batch

5. Submitting an image that has already been rejected without writing a note to the reviewer explaining why the image(s) is being resubmitted. Resubmitting an image without making the appropriate corrections.

There is no option for making corrections and resubmitting. This is a serious omission from the drop down menu. Everytime I made corrections with a note to the reviewer, it was accepted. I've been doing this for nine years.

You can also go to any page in your portfolio and type in the keyword or title of the file you are looking for. (at the top of page) Saves from going through every page.

Reset Preferences

A lot of Photoshop/Bridge problems can be fixed by dumping the Preferences file. While launching Photoshop/Bridge, hold down Alt+Ctrl+Shift on the PC or Cmd+Option+Shift on the Mac. When asked to reset the preferences, choose Yes.

Photo Critique / Re: Can any of my photos make it as stock?
« on: January 18, 2015, 13:29 »
You have a good eye. Overall, your work tends to come off rather dark and moody. Stock usually likes bright and cheerful.
Some of your horizons are crooked. I would straighten those out before submitting. My 2 cents!

Agreed. I wish I could just delete everything that hasn't been approved, and start over. I have files that were uploaded last April and still haven't been reviewed. Knowing what I know now, it would have been better to just upload a few of my best sellers and hold off the rest until the reviewing process is more fair to the contributors.

We were originally told that they would not play favorites in the queue, and that all files would be reviewed in the order they were received. Now they say they know it's screwed up, but for now the reviews are random. I can no longer sing the praises of what a great model Canva is, when it puts the contributor's concerns at the back of their priorities. Responses and excuses aren't cutting it. If they don't turn it around soon, they will be stuck with a reputation for unfairness, that will hurt them.

It's time to tell it like it is.   Canva is not really contributor friendly!

I hope that Canva gets it's queue fixed. My portfolio (600+) has been uploaded there since last Summer with only 60 reviewed. I'm getting sales everyday, but they haven't even reviewed my best sellers yet.

That just gives me the "backstage" look.  I want a link to "canva.com/seanlockephotography" - my online "storefront".

Okay, go to Your sales, click on any sale, then click on your name, next to the image.    Or..go to your portfolio and click on any approved photo, then click on your name. That takes you to your "storefront".  It's the best way to check newly approved photos.

Why can't I find a link to my portfolio?  I would think my icon would lead there, or something.  Or am I missing it?

Hi!

I have 2000 files to watermark for 500px. Do you know any easy to use action for Photoshop to do that for me ? I want my watermark to be centered in the images.

Thanks!

You can upload a low-res watermarked version to 500px and then a high-res unwatermarked version to the store for licensing on Prime. So if you're concerned about what shows on 500px that's the best way to do it. On Prime we use the high-res version and downsize it and apply a 500px Prime watermark to that.

Here's an example of the 500px Prime watermark. You can see how ridiculous it is.

Macrografiks / End of the Road
« on: December 01, 2014, 16:07 »
From my email:

December 1, 2014
The End Of The Road - Licenses

Hello all,

After two years online and the lack of good results, Macrografiks will finally stop offering licenses as a stock image agency. The site will be working as it is now until the 31st of this December, when it will be changed to an informational page redirecting to our Etsy shop. We are not taking more uploads at this time and all the content will be deleted that day, so you do not need to delete your account.

None of the latest tests worked. The 90% royalty-rate did not encourage photographers to bring possible customers on their own and the blog-size license did not bring more sales. The site became very static for not bringing more contributors and we got to a point where it is too difficult to boost it again and expect different results.

Macrografiks will not disappear. We will turn our platform into a product-based business, offering different type of print products and many home decor items. We will continue to work with quality photos as we have done with our licenses and probably add new type of images like graphics(vectors and bitmaps). During the next months we will focus on our Etsy shop until we can implement a basic e-commerce platform for our new set of products.

Right now we are working with few photographers on Etsy, we will contact more during December to extend our type of images but we will keep the list small as it is easier for us to manage under the present circumstances. If you want to participate please send us an email.

We will keep the newsletter updates to inform users about products and the platform, but also to advise photographers who may want to rejoin if we manage to grow with this new model. Most of our present contributors may be subscribed to our newsletter, if not, you can do it from our Facebook page.

THANK YOU
The Macrografiks team wants to thank you for being part of this project and for dedicating your valuable time uploading your content. It has been a hard and long road and we are very sorry that this project did not work as we expected. We spent priceless time doing our best to make it work but things do not always go the way we want. Hopefully we can find new ways to succeed and whether you are still with us or not, we wish you all the best as photographers.

All the best,
Francisco Aveledo

I have all images uploaded watermarked, no way to be stolen.

They can be stolen easily. I can screen grab anything on 500px. The watermarks in the upper corner are very weak.
