Cameras / Lenses / Re: Canon 100mm Macro!

I am not in macro, but since I saw your pictures, I wonder if I am sure I don't need such a lens ?

Adobe Stock / Re: Fotolia tightening up standards a bit?

As a first proposal I sent them a batch of 10 pictures and they accepted four of the same place (Trafalgar square), so I don't think they are limiting access to one photo per subject.

I am very interested in Lightroom which seems to do a lot of work for the photographer. Other users around who use it to track their pictures in agencies ?

SnapVillage.com / Just got in
« on: January 08, 2008, 13:55 »
I just got accepted in SnapVillage. That means they accepted my only photograph to have crossed through my four or five uploading of five pictures (always the same five, I am kind of stuborn). I'm glad about it. But they took something like three weeks to make their decision. Is it worthwhile ?

They should invent the camera which automatically changes faces in order to put smiles on everybody. Such a waste of time to wait for everybody to be smiling at the same time ! Shouldn't be difficult, Photoshop Element already allows to put people in picture where they don't belong... Or what about a bracketing function with an automatic merge at the end of the process, and a clean picture with everybody smiling ?

(if they could eradicate also litter in the background, clouds in front of the sun, shadows on faces, long teeths and large ears... but I think for all this we'll have to wait at least two more years)...

Really interesting article ; I just finished part 1 and I am now reading part 2. A must-read for every newcomer (like me !).
Thanks

I totally agree. For a corporate, 1$ 10$ or 100$ are exactly the same and a company which wants a large print will pay what it has to pay. Of course, if we sell at 1$ they'll pay 1$ but in a project that will cost a few thousand (or tens of thousand) $, 1 or 100 is exactly the same.

I have images on there as well, but I am trying to build a portfolio there that is different from those on the microsites.  Granted I do have some overlap right now but hope to change that in 2008.

I think photographer should propose different pictures to these sites. If a customer see the same picture in microstock and in midstock, he will feel cheated by midstock ("why are they asking me 50$ when the other guy propose the same thing for 1$ ?") and in the long run it will undermine midstock weight, as customers will go directly to microstock in hope to find the same thing for far less.

New Sites - General / Re: Has anyone tried Photoshelter
« on: January 05, 2008, 06:14 »
so has anyone gotten any images online here?

I just tried them two days ago with three pictures, I'll let you know if they accepted them (otherwise, I'll send three others, and three others, and...).

I think we should just support Featurepics regardless of how good or bad sales is....if we put it there, it will sell right???

They are the only decent people around who give us 70% of the sale...really....i will continue to support them even if sales is poor, if nothing but for their honest, integrity and treating the photographers welll...

I agree, but there is also Photoshelter which pays 70% on pictures sold for a minimum of 50$...

http://mp.photoshelter.com/

I think photographer who are keen on improving their revenues and their situation should help these site which try to sell quality for a good price. Everybody should win in the long term, as microstock would be obliged to raise their percentage if they want to keep the good photographs.

But of course I am just a newcomer here and perhaps I am dead wrong ?

Featurepics.com / Re: Featurepics site down??
« on: January 05, 2008, 00:14 »
I encountered some problems yesterday too, but today everything seems to be working.

I bought "Photos that Sell" by Lee Frost.  It is a great book full of really good photos and ideas.  My copy was published in 2003, it is a bit pre-digital and geared towards the traditional stock but I would still recommend it.

"Photos that sell" by Lee Frost is quite good (as every book by Lee Frost I read until now) and in the same field I appreciate "Selling photography" by Roger Antrobus (Amphoto books 2003) also outdated for everything digital and not dedicated to microstock, but very interesting and covering every aspect of the photos to make for stock.

Surprising, but I agree with this lady !

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Considering Closing Account in 2008
« on: January 01, 2008, 07:13 »
As a newcomer here I don't have any account to close. But I realised that it would take a lot of time and efforts to upload to several agencies (my broadband is not that broad and certain agencies - snapvillage and fotolia for example - are really hard to load upon with a lot of uploading lost somewhere in the Internet limbo). So I decided to try Alamy (my four pictures are on reviewing there at this moment) and Featurepics which already accepted five of my photos (my first five, in fact). So, from now on (and until my access provider can provide me with a serious access) I'll try to be exclusive with agencies which can provide a nice return for the photographer.

Being european I wanted to check this agency... It seems this site is devoted to a company selling everything for pets and other strange animals (horses, cattle...) ; doesn't look like a microstock agency, even though they use lot of pictures... ;)

Mystical lighting goes much farther :  quote :
The software contains [...] and unique visual imagery that is generated from the software algorithms that is proprietary to the Licensor and is not
for resale by the Licensee. [...]  You may not modify, network, rent, loan, distribute or create derivative works [...] including the creation of effects products [...].

English is not my first language either, but as I understand this, you can't sell images made using this software ("unique visual imagery" & "including the creation of effects"). Which means that it's just a toy or something you could use only for personnal use (i.e. for example your personal web-site ?). But maybe I'm wrong. Any lawyer around ?

Featurepics.com / Re: Now Contributing
« on: December 29, 2007, 15:24 »
As they were the first to accept my pictures (today : I'm a newcomer), I am now contributing. And I have so much difficulties loading files to any agency (really small bandwidth here) that I think I'll stay with them for now. I am currently up-loading some more files...

SnapVillage.com / Anybody home ?
« on: December 28, 2007, 06:13 »
I uploaded five pictures there, only one got through. I tried again and again (and again)... nothing new. Does everybody meet the same problem or I am the only one ? That's a possibility, as I am a newcomer here perhaps I did something wrong (several times). Thanks.

Off Topic / Re: How long have you been doing microstock?
« on: December 23, 2007, 14:23 »
Just began today with registering on several sites and loading some pictures on Shutterstock. Hope to do more in the coming days, and have a significant portfolio by the end of 2008.
Best wishes to all.
