Someone asked me to do a custom illustration based on one of my stock images. I quoted her an exclusive user license (production price + user license price) but she now asks if there's a non-exclusive option as well, and how much that would cost.

Would it be wise to sell a non-exclusive license of a custom illustration? What would you do?

Everything's negotiable. Just find a price you are comfortable with.

^^ taking into account how likely you are of being able to sell if again (how 'specific' it is), and make sure the non-exclusive terms are clearly written into your licence.

I wouldn't be too scared of selling a non-exclusive license to her if you think the image will work as a stock photo.  I'd still keep the price reasonably high though.

The thing is, I find it hard to decide on a price, if I would even do it.

I'm thinking, since it's custom work, the production price should still be factored in, but with a slightly cheaper user license (but higher than the average stock license price). But it's also tailored towards the client's needs, so perhaps it's not easily to sell to others.

I don't think half price would be unfair.  If your original exclusive illustration was $200, $100 for a non-exclusive drawing to the buyer's specs could be OK.. no lower than $50 (just to throw some numbers out)

It wouldn't be wise, because you are actually giving her your exclusive time and effort..

Even if you think the file will sell "like hot cakes" you still shouldn't do it.. She is trying to get you WORK for peanuts! Exclusive work is valuable and it can not be sold for RF prices..

It really depends on what you are doing. I've done things for free that only take a few minutes, then I've done modifications that take hours. Just try to budget your time on how long you think it is going to take you, and charge based on that.

Have to agree. Even under a non-exclusive agreement, the buyer in this case is still getting more value than they should for a greatly discounted price. They get first use of the image, before it can even be made available to other buyers through stock, and in the end it's still custom work, made to order to the buyer's specs and demands. You don't know for sure that it will turn out like your typical stock work would, so offering non-exclusivity up front can be risky.

Personally, I wouldn't do it for less than the full exclusive price minus 10-15% for non-exclusivity.

Decided to offer an exclusive license only. I don't see it as commercially viable for microstock.
