Hi Guys,

first time posting on here, I did a search for this subject but couldn't find anything relevant.

I was paid to make a video promo at this years Notting Hill carnival in London by a PA company. They had their rig on a stage run by a very large beverage company. Now the beverage company wants to see my footage with a view to licensing them from me. The PA company is fine with this so I'm all good there.

What I need to figure out is how much to charge them, and thats what I'm hoping you guys could help me with.

There are 76 clips, most between 10 & 30 sec long, shot on a 7D, 1080p. They where shot with the cinestyle preset and I'd be supplying them as is, with no colour correction/grading etc. The footage also includes about 20 clips of the headline act Basement Jaxx.

I'm thinking of charging them per clip and offer a small discount if they buy all of them. (maybe 10%)

How much do you think they're worth/ I can reasonably charge?

Also, we haven't discussed what sort of licence they would need, do you think I should ...

A/  offer them my own licence conditions with the quote?
B/  discuss licence before giving them a quote?
C/  give them different price options for different types of licence?

I'm gonna make a decision on this by the end of the weekend, any suggestions or advice very welcome. Sorry if some of this seems obvious, I've only just started dealing with bigger companies and want to come across as professional as possible to them.

Thanks for your time!

Howdy Stranger,  I like to keep things simple - thus charge them a full days wages ($250).

Full day $250?

Ask a minimum of $500 for half day and $850 for full day, not less

I would first ask them what rights do they need. Then decide on the price tag appropriate for these rights.

If it were me, I'd make low-resolution copies of the clips, send them to the company, and let them decide which clips they want to use and how they want to use them, which would determine the rights that you would need to license, which would determine the price you would charge them.  Have them make an offer before you quote a price if you can.  You might get pleasantly surprised.  You could be thinking hundreds while they're thinking thousands.  And unless you have a release from the headline act, you might want to avoid sending those clips because you could run into some legal issues with them.

Discuss the license terms with them first. Ask them how, where, and for how long they'll be using the clips and how large an audience they'll be exposed to. Also, if it's a very large beverage company (how large?) they're probably used to paying a lot for video clips. Ask them what their budget is.

Hey

Thanks for your replies!

Shelma1 - I think you're right, I'm gonna ask them about the licence before I talk money.

Carl - Yep already chopped the clips, watermarked and exported at lo-res. I like the idea of waiting to see what they want before I quote. cheers.

Sherif - $250???  I hoping to make a LOT more than that!

Cheers

I think you're stuck with editorial licence for the basement jaxx thing unless you got full release from the act.

May be worthless to them if its for some commercial project.
