I received a warning e-mail about 12 hours prior to the downtime:

"Tomorrow night, beginning between the hours of 8 PM - 4 AM MST, we will be performing a kernel update on your server.  We estimate the outage to be approximately 15-30 minutes.  During this time, your email, website and account will not be accessible.  This updated kernel brings a number of significant enhancements in all aspects of the kernel, the integral part of which the rest of the Operating System relies upon.  You can read more about the changes in this kernel at http://kernelnewbies.org/Linux_3.4.

We apologize that we cannot give you an exact time-frame between these 8 hours as to when you will experience the downtime due to the number of additional servers we will be performing this update on as well.

Should you have any questions or concerns regarding this planned outage, please contact support."

So this is what they were doing.

can't do anything about bluehost..

but what I can do is recommend you godaddy web hosting..

I have been with them for 3 years now and it has been up almost %100 (I think my site was down for like an hour in 3 years and they gave me some store credits as an apology)

I have hosted my own sites since 2006 and used like 4 different companies.. I experienced major downtime issues on all of them apart from godaddy..

I've been saying it for months now. BlueHost, HostMonster, HostGator, all run on the same servers and all are garbage hosting companies. I really don't know why so many folks recommend them, other than because they're cheap. So I guess if you want cheap and unreliable, go with these companies.

Otherwise, avoid them.

I have over 150 domains hosted with HostGator and have VERY rare downtime. Also great customer service. That's why I recommend them.

As a web developer, I REALLY don't like working on GoDaddy's servers. I love them for domain registration, but I always warn people away from their hosting because they make everything more difficult for a coder.

no, my ex wife!

I want to say that but I am still paying her alimony & child support thus fearful she might read this site and raise my payments!

Probably because of referrals.

I've been with BlueHost for a few years (prior to Symbiostock) and although they're not perfect, they're not bad, at least for the shared hosting. I have no experience of any higher end stuff from them.

They did have that long ish outage last year and they did change PHP versions once without notifying users, but otherwise things have been good for me.

My site is down right now. Same old problems with HostMonster/BlueHost/HostGator.

I tend to agree. It's decent for the price. If you want more and better, then you will probably have to pay for it.

They have still been having issues since this thread was created. I have been using php 5.4 since they sent the email saying we needed to change, and all has been working well. I started having problems. Went to cpanel and my php had been changed back to 5.2. As soon as i changed back to 5.4, it was working again. I still have some issues because of multiple reverts back to 5.2 over a couple of days, but seriously thinking of changing hosts. Its too bad because i have always recommended them based on their past good performance. This past year, not so much.

It's not a savings if your site isn't working, it's down, or you need to spend time after time, fixing things that change or break. Is $4 a month (maybe?) worth the aggravation?

I'm ok with paying a little more, but the next choice seems to be to a VPS server (on any hosting site, not just bluehost) and that runs around $30 a mo. From $6 to $30/mo is quite a jump. Wish there was something in the middle.

That would get my attention too! I'll mention this, no referrals, no spam. http://www.Gate.com take a look. I pay about $99 a year for hosting.

A friend of mine hosts his sites on Powweb.com and says it's inexpensive and works well. I don't know how many others are in the $99 a year (or $9 a month, discount for annual payment) but $30 a month sounds very high in this competitive market?

Hope that was helpful in some way. I'm on gate.com Business plan. Have four sites hosted on the same account. The add-ons cost almost nothing, except the domain name. Same server space and a small annual fee. But they appear as a distinct website and nothing shows they are running off the same master hosting plan.

I will check that out, Pete. Thanks. I browsed through a few threads here and just started checking some out.

Anyone ever used Media Temple? They've been around for a long time, probably 10-15 years as far as I can remember. And they're supposed to be really solid and reliable. Plans start at $20 per month, which isn't cheap but isn't crazy expensive, either.

Symbiostock com and org are down as well

It might be a good idea to put each of these two sites on different servers in case it happens again.
