Title: Direct Buyer Wants W-9?
Post by: PaulieWalnuts on March 27, 2012, 16:20
I've been selling more directly lately and just had a new buyer from a company ask for a W-9 which hasn't happened before. I thought this was kind of odd since isn't this for labor like contractors?

I've had some magazines require the W-9; most, however, only require Social Security Number.

If you make more than $600 they would need to give you a 1099. For that they need your SS# or EIN. Rather than chase you for it next january, they just get it now. It's in your interest to have it done properly, since you need to report the income anyway. The definition of independent contractor has been under a lot of focus with the irs, so being able to prove you do things properly can only help.
