Title: Managed Hosting
Post by: Micro4 on January 06, 2016, 21:16
Hi,

I've been looking at PhotoDeck for fully managed ecommerce website hosting.

It really fits my needs and looks good but there's one major problem. They have a 1GB upload limit and they are sticking to it.

I want to sell Photos and Videos. With videos, it is really easy to exceed their 1GB limit, especially with 4K video.

Does anyone know of a fully managed ecommerce host with a reasonable upload limit?

Thanks for any suggestions!

Thanks but the Symbiostock video player is not responsive. It looks a mess.

I'm looking for a host that is fully managed (like PhotoDeck). I do not want to be maintaining wordpress updates and fixing compatibility problems.

The Symbiostock video player is based on the most popular open source video player available:

http://videojs.com/ (http://videojs.com/)

Based in HTML5, it fully supports responsive designs.

We may improve the skin on the video player in the future, but are limited by the amount of resources we have for development.

The same player is used on Symzio:

http://www.symzio.com/stock-video-footage/gorgeous-seascape-view-indian-ocean-waves-crashing-upon-rocks (http://www.symzio.com/stock-video-footage/gorgeous-seascape-view-indian-ocean-waves-crashing-upon-rocks)

Which looks great on both desktop and mobile devices, and is fully responsive.

Therefore, the only option available to you with regards to Symbiostock would be to get your own host and go from there. However, I personally would prefer that sort of a setup because it gives me a lot more control. However, if you don't want to manage your system at all, the PLUS solution would have been ideal, but is not available. We are not accepting any new PLUS customers right now as we don't want to over-saturate our PLUS system, and are not adding new servers right now.

I can't think of another solution that provides what you're looking for.

Your video player is not "fully responsive" as you say. It adds black bars either top and bottom or left and right depending on the size of the device.

On smaller devices your video player looks really bad.

There are several public domain scripts available to fix this problem but I've had enough of scripting websites I want to concentrate on making content.

While the player itself is indeed responsive, what you are talking about is making the video dimensions hug the aspect ratio of the video. Not many players do this, but I've now implemented the fix to Symzio, which will be released shortly with the Symbiostock Video plugin as well:

Thanks for bringing that to my attention!

I've been wondering about selling video too. I only do video and have over 5000 clips so to get them all online I would need something like 3TB of hosting.
I've looked at Symbo but they don't have anywhere near enough storage and are pretty expensive. The only other option could be to buy Ktools pro for $299 lifetime cos and host it on something like godaddy as it has unlimited storage and bandwidth.

Does anyone else have experience on uploading your large video ports on any of these services?

Cheers

Hi Cider Apple,

You need to host your video products on Amazon S3 (Reduced Redundancy) and then configure your website application to link to S3 for the downloads.

I don't know whether Ktools will link to S3 but WooCommerce and also Easy Digital Downloads will. The biggest problem you will have is maintaining your site with the continual Wordpress updates. That's why I'm in search of managed hosting.

Best of luck!

Hey Cider,

If hosting it is not an issue for you, I suggest you go with Symbiostock + Symbiostock Video. Symbiostock is free while the video plugin is $49. However once that's purchased, you can upload an unlimited number of videos as long as your host supports it.

And the added bonus is you'll be able to syndicate your stuff in Symzio if you become a contributor. I wouldn't worry much about updates - although you will want to update Symbiostock every now and then, once installed, nothing else needs to be updated.

We haven't updated most of our main sites in either WooCommerce or WordPress for nearly six months.

I suggest you install and give Symbiostock a try with a few images - that's pretty much the same workflow for videos and it doesn't cost anything to try out.

That is just not true.

You have to maintain all the other Wordpress plugins (required for basic functionality) along with Wordpress itself. Many of the basic Wordpress plugins have updates a couple of times a month.

I'm getting disillusioned with Wordpress. The recent update broke my theme (Salient). There was a new Salient update today (which presumably fixes things) but the previous update was December 10th. It's out of control and way too time consuming.

I need to find reliable managed hosting.

Once you have your site running you don't have to update anything unless you're trying to get upgrades. Code doesn't change - if your system runs, it runs. As I said, we have systems that have not been upgraded for about 8 months running strong.

However - I think the one thing that is a problem by default in WordPress is the auto-updating core. In my opinion, this is not a desirable effect, and causes precisely the issues you mentioned.

On live machines, you should NOT be auto-updating the WP core, yet they don't make it obvious how to disable it:

http://www.symbiostock.org/forums/topic/wordpress-4-4-and-woocommerce-2-4-11/ (http://www.symbiostock.org/forums/topic/wordpress-4-4-and-woocommerce-2-4-11/)

This is the first thing I do when I create a new install. That way, once I get a system that works, I don't do anything else.

I'm getting disillusioned with Wordpress.

I think WP is a good CMS for certain things - the interface makes it good for Symbiostock. But I think people get into serious trouble when they install too many plugins, and as mentioned above, let WP auto-update. Lots of things break when that happens. IMO it should be disabled by default.

Good luck though - you do seem genuinely interested in finding a good place for your videos, and I hope you find it.

Again, I'm afraid that is not true.

There are constant 'security updates' and patches. You can not 'leave everything as it is' and still process credit cards and paypal. You're asking for trouble.

have you tried or thought of trying Nimia? They give you different options, from just storing/hosting for your own Port or agency-style uploads. Check it out here: http://bit.ly/1kVU9Kq (http://bit.ly/1kVU9Kq), might provide all (or some) of the features you need.

I don't do video so I'm not sure if this helps. I really like Photoshelter for hosting and licensing my photos. They don't host video but apparently you can imbed links - no idea if that would work for licensing though I'd guess you could send the files to clients. I often get contacted by clients via Photoshelter and sometimes up sending files rather than direct downloads because the client has questions or it's a magazine with a specific budget.

Anyway, here's what they say about video:
"At this time, we do not support the hosting of video files, but it is possible to embed video that is hosted on another site, such as Vimeo; if you're using our Beam platform, you can learn more here. If you're using our Classic Websites platform, simply copy and paste the embed codes into any page of your website that supports the embedding of HTML. "

This could be useless for you or it could work. I'd give them a call on Monday if you think it might work and get more info. They are very helpful and you can talk to a real person if you need to which I always find to be a big plus.

With the pro account you get unlimited space. Again, not sure what you're looking to do in terms of hosting but if the linking works, it might be an option.

Hi Cliff thanks for the advice. I've checked them out but only seem to see them as an agancy. Do you know of the page where they explain hosting? Maybe it's right in front of me and I'm missing it?

Thanks wordplanet too, I'll check it out!
