Title: WordPress Plugin - Sell Media for StockPhotos
Post by: Pixart on November 16, 2012, 15:11
APA linked to this free plugin today.  I haven't had a chance to look into it (at all), but may be worth taking a look - and in the video they ask for feedback, so hopefully will further develop.

it does look like a very interesting feature, I have never tried worldpress and I would like to know what are the requirements to get a website running, do we need anything else beside the following?

- register a domain (how much are we talking about? 10$/year?)
- hosting (FTP, MySQL and unlimited space) (seen a few pro solutions from them at 35$/month with 35GB)
- a theme (100$/year to access all themes or buying a single theme for 75$)

is it better than ktools or cms? does it require more skills and work?

p.s: not saying I am going to open my own store just thinking out loud

I did not look very closely (maybe our friend Cory will have some time  ;) ) but at first glance it looks more like RM and does not offer multiple sizes.  It is a free plugin, the watermark extension is $29 and the hover/magnify glass is $5 - but it demo didn't work on ie for me - it did on ff.

I'm pretty sure I will try it, up to my eyballs in hockey and ringette teams at the moment though.  I'll have to let you guys work out the kinks since I won't have much time before Christmas break.

This plugin looks promising.

With so many options its best to do the hard graft and research it yourself -  It does require a server with PHP, SQL. Make sure your theme has good support. A lot don't!

a theme for $100 ? :) you don't have to get a theme from these guys to make the plugin work.. This plugin should work with any theme.. once you install wordpress, you can choose a free theme in your admin panel..

thanks for your reply! so its just the domain register, hosting and watermark/magnifier feature (implementing a watermark in a few k's of pictures would be quite consuming, maybe not much on a automate batch)

it's cheaper than you think.. It's insane that people still don't have their personal stores :)

I recommend godaddy.com for hosting.. It's cheap and (in my experience) reliable..

before them, I had many problems with 3 different hosting companies.. since I switched to godaddy, I have always been up and running, apart from an incident when they had a major problem and many sites were down for a few hours.. good thing, when the site was back, it was back in one piece :) everything was good and they offered about $8 or $9 discount as an apology when I extended my hosting plan..

Overall, they have been the best and smoothest hosting provider for me.. and I have used enough to know that they are good and cheap..

Tried it on my Wordpress as I was looking for this exact feature - I thought WOW great and it's free.

LoL you get what you pay for. I'm running the Athualpa theme and for some reason my uploaded image doesn't show up at all.

Configuration settings appear to be quite limited. Enhanced search options cannot be deactivated and mess up my search box placement in the side bars - bummer.

Also every uploaded image requires a manual page creation with a shortcode pasted into it. So, individual photo pages are not generated automatically.

I can see that it would be too much to ask for all that but I can't use it out of the box, at all. It's pretty much not-functional for me.

So I have to do research and coding to make the sucker work.

Watermark feature is $29 - well so it's not free!

I think I've seen other solutions for Wordpress. Maybe there's another one that will work for me.

I'm hosting my site at Hostgator. Got a great deal and super reliability. Shared hosting is still quite fast and issues are resolved swiftly.

did some maths for godaddy (1 year)
- domain registration (.com): 7.11
- private domain: 3.59
- deluxe hosting (150GB): 35.88
- 1 email: 11.28
- ssl certificate: 43.99
- search engine visibility: 15.24

£ 117.09 or $ 185.98

I have included pretty much all they offered me ;D

You don`t really need much, basically what you mentioned, and I think anybody with a little time can get a WP site running well. However, there is one critical point you have to watch out before getting a domain: the PHP memory size the hoster gives you. Quick explanation: When you upload your images the PHP software (Wordpress) has to resize your full res images to thumbs, process them to watermarked material etc. This takes memory from your server. Many shared Hosting packages limit the memory usage used by scripts to not waste their ressources (many sites on one server = shared). To expand the memory you have to change the setting in the PHP ini. It is just a text file on the server and very easy, but you need access to it or the Company has to allow this and support will do it for you. I think the minimum should be around 512 megs.

Be sure to make this clear before signing up for a package:
1. Lots of PHP memory assigned in the ini  OR
2. Access to the php.ini file to make your own adjustments.

You don't really need SSL or Search engine visibility at the moment.. I tried SE visibility and it doesn't do much.. I maintain 5 websites and the wordpress one, is the one that gets most traffic without any effort.. wordpress is probably one of the better SEO optimized web solutions on earth..

it might be worth your effort if you can make this one work properly for you because wordpress is a "traffic magnet" compared to Ktools and CMS account..

I installed it and this is what I came across too. Doesn't seem to have a feature that creates pages of thumbnails. Copy and paste shortcodes to publish images? Wuh?  If that's really how it works that's pretty rudimentary.

When I first saw the specs I was drooling but my enthusiasm just went off a cliff.

Tried it today. As others have stated it lacks many features. If you are on a budget with a small portfolio, and only selling RF then definitely worth looking at.

I'm now trying Photoshelter ($10/month + 10% commission). It took very little time to setup for RM and integrate into my Wordpress site. Its not completely seamless, but you can customise it to look almost seamless. Quite like it so far. Not sure if it can re-size images to their respective RM sizes.

Yes, I tried it the other day as well.. It is far from ideal.. I'd rather pay for ktools than put up with this..

why don't you get ktools instead of paying photoshelter every month? I think it could be better in the long run.. I already have CMS account for my site and I like it.. I believe you have to have either ktools or CMSaccount..

I was just wondering if this plug-in could replace them as wordpress is much better SEO'd than both.. but it is pretty poor the way it is..

I want to stay with Wordpress for its SEO and many other features. Also, its quite possible someone, maybe Sellmedia, will develop a better plugin for our needs in the near future. With a small portfolio like mine I can afford to experiment.

This plugin looks scary, too many important missing features and by the way it makes no sense to sell without watermark so it's not free at all.

However, there's a good reason to use a proper e-commerce solution or K-Tools etc : Security !

The only real turn-key solution i see around is Photoshelter, full support for many payment gateways, managed hosting, no security issues, and the platform is running fine since many years and used by 1000s of photographers.

This plugin being new must have plenty of bugs, and Wordpress itself constantly needs to be babysitted, upgrades, bugfixed.

As for SEO you should get up to date about it, as after the recent Panda and Penguin google updates the game is completely different from before, what all these sites and platform do is just the "basic SEO" and nothing more, the rest is all up to you and at the moment it seems the only way to rank high is to be reviewed and linked by high-PR reputable web sites, so in our cases your site should be advertised or reviewed by PDN, DPreview, photo magazines, photo forums, photo blogs, etc. .. it's not gonna happen unless you've a lot of money and time to spend or a very very good product.

i've just recently installed wp [extremely simple install!] and haven't customized my wp yet, since i'm using it to create other content  basic idea is to have non-smugmug pages that link directly to my smugmug site

i used a different wp plugin to create wp posts that display my smugmug galleries, including captions and alt tags in the images

the wp post looks like this:
http://www.buydigpix.com/wp/?p=32 (http://www.buydigpix.com/wp/?p=32)

i then extracted the details and transferred to my website where it looks like this:
http://cascoly.com/photo/religion-islam.asp (http://cascoly.com/photo/religion-islam.asp)

that page is then called in turn by
http://cascoly.com/trav/religion.asp (http://cascoly.com/trav/religion.asp)

the idea is that  the dense content should get picked up by google crawls

Anything new on the Sell-Media plugin?

Love the idea but not having much success getting it to work properly.  I've added the watermark plugin but when I activate it the image the watermark is supposed to be protecting disappears from view.  They've added some sort of support for multiple sizes but again I can't figure it out.  I've built several wordpress sites in the past so it's not that I'm just clueless :)

Sell Media does not have the watermark feature in the free version, but there are other watermark plugins created by other developers.

I've tried this as well, it's not easy, one has to take a lot of time to make it work. But I have to pass on this one.

There's a MSG member KonaHawaii, who's working on a WP theme for microstock selling. Check the topic out at the General Discussion.

Thank you Jeffrey, I appreciate your post.  I'm aware of the wordpress solution that is being worked on by KonaHawaii.  I'll be keeping my eye on that as well.  The difficult part for me, as I've come to find, is that I'm looking for a solution for both stills and video.  Sell-Media is supposed to be designed for both but so far I'm having trouble implementing it.

if it helps at all stockmn, I have played with the Sell Media plugin a bit and the first thing I noticed was it REALLY depends on what theme you have running. On one theme it had major conflict issues, that even managed to extend into the Dashboard/Admin area! On others, not so bad, just some display issues that CSS would probably fix.

My project is on hold until Kona's theme, the other software being written by elvinstar is finished, and then Sell Media will be a little older and well tested too. Then have 3 possible solutions to consider before moving forward.

Thanks Microstock Man that helps make a bit more sense of the Sell-Media plugin and confirms what I've experienced with it so far.  With my current WP theme everything thing I've uploaded is badly formatted and/or doesn't work (like watermarks).  I've wondered if a different theme would work better.

i'm using it to sell vector illustrations here... www.staceywalkeroldham.com (http://www.staceywalkeroldham.com) it took me awhile to figure it out but now everything is working properly and i'm happy with it so far! i'm hoping that in the future the buyer will have to click on something to agree to the license before downloading. for now i'm just adding a link to each item and including the license in the zip file.
