I just noticed a banner today on the shutterstock results page that says this:

Improved Search Results

Shutterstock is happy to announce that we have released a greatly improved Most Popular sort order for viewing search results. Many months of work and testing have gone into this project and we are confident you will see a huge improvement in the quality of your search results. We welcome your feedback via email or phone. Enjoy!

Checked the forum and saw this

(1) New Most Popular -- This week we will be releasing a new Most Popular sort order algorithm. Months of work and testing have gone into this project and we're confident that both you and our customers will see a huge improvement in the quality of our search results.

By taking a fresh look at the vast amount of data we have about our individual images, and about customer interaction with those images, we've been able to develop a more accurate and useful mapping between customer searches and the relevant images in our fast-growing library. Our goal is not only to increase the total number of downloads we serve; its also to decrease the number of searches our customers perform before they download an image.

The length of time an image has been on our site and the total number of downloads for that image are still factors, but we now consider many other factors as well. We want to remind you that we do not consider your royalty level, country of residence, or any other submitter-level data in arranging our content search results.

We know you are wary of changes like this, but we also know, from extensive testing, that the new results are going to be viewed by our customers as a big improvement. They will translate into both happier customers and higher earnings for the submitters who provide downloaded content. Please do a few searches yourself and let us know what you think by emailing us at [email protected].

We look forward to feedback from you and our customers and we will continue to use that feedback to make improvements to our search tools, products, and websites.

have you noticed a change?

I did notice a change in my portfolio. Most popular images are some other images that few days ago.

I wonder if they have prioritized the keywords?  They still appear in alphabetical order but perhaps the search weights the ones most used for the image.  Hopefully this will increase sales.  Looks like all the sites will improve their search after istock did it.

I would still like to see a premium collection at higher prices and exclusive images.  They seem to be 1 step behind istock when they need to be 1 step ahead.

Yes, I noticed a change and I guess they have been fiddling with the search engine for quite a while now. In April I uploaded around 80 new pics and barely made the payout in what should have been a record month. My port is not that big - around 1.100 pics - but I think it's big enough to notice changes in the search engine.

In May I have 5 days with low single digit downloads - some of them perfectly normal weekdays, like Wednesday or Thursday this week, again with 20 additional pics online. If something sells, it tends to be older files from my port...
