Best Match only exists within the photographers' galleries. The new algorithm is going to be for the "Most Popular."
This was quoted by Setho (admin) at shutterstock.

This will severely change sales.  I am not sure this is a good thing as just becasue something has had more sales, doesn't mean that it is better than the photo that was just uploaded.

if it is true that the most popular images will be the default search setting, then the best images will just get more and more downloads.. the new images won't ever have a chance to catch up.

I agree.  This is a major change that should be avoided.  I'm surprised that there hasn't been an outcry on this yet...

I am surprised too.

it also means that 2mp photo taken with a crap camera that was uploaded 3 yaars ago and has mild success will show up before a photo taken on 5D with L lens in a complete studio setup that was only uploaded last week.

Madness.  Madness I say.

The new "Most Popular" search works by taking the amount of time an image has been on the site and how many times it has been downloaded in this amount of time. This will not favor those who have been submitting since the beginning. Instead it will be a more accurate assessment of what the most popular image really is.
again from setho.

I think this is a good answer.

Wonder how it will affect the new upload effect where new images always seem to get a few hits.

allright, i ended up bothering myself to check out the shutterstock site and see what the thread was all about.  It seems like it will be in effect within a week or two.

This is horrible.  I'm a new player to Shutterstock and this will effect my sales dramatically.  Displaying the newest images first encourages uploads by photographers.  Maybe now that they have enough images and new images aren't a priority they are switching to displaying their proven best images to buyers.

well the newest first search is still available, just not default.  I think a lot of users might still use newest first because buyers who download a lot of images have allraedy looked through all the old images that they might want and now just was the new images.

Doesn't sound too good....not good at all

Aside,

Have you guys found that Shutterstock has slowed down a bit for whatever reason?  I used to have a nice $1.25 average a day, now I'm having a tough time hitting $0.75

As your images get older and older the less they make. This is due to our current topic, the search order. If you are currently submitting at the same rate then that would be odd. I'm getting a little less then usuall, but I'm assuming it is because I haven't submitted for a while. I've been a little busy, selling my home, building a home and my wife just delivered our new kid.

I must admit July has been rather slow at Shutterstock oh those $10 days of june (OK so there was only one but it certainly helped get a payout)

Regarding default search settings at Shutterstock I'm not sure if its my computer but try this go to Shutterstock site do a search then change search criteria to something else for instance "oldest first" close shutterstock and navigate back to that page and do the same search again. I think you will find the last search setting has been saved as a cookie so the computer remembers your preference.

So it would be up to the designer to decide whether they are a newest first or a most popular first kind of person. I would hope they would choose the former if they are working on similar projects. Othewise there is no point any of us uploading.

Don't forget so far this month we have had two weekends and the 4th of July (I hope this is one of the low points of the summer).

so has anyone noticed a change in images downloaded in the last few days?  It might be just my imagination but it seems like older images which have allright downloads/day have gotten a little more action yesterday.. but that could just be a coincidence.

as for declining sales.  I think it is pretty hard to deduct conclusions with such small sample sizes, but regardless as for some sort of a measuring stick.  I stopped uploading on May 1 (have been busy with other things) and just now shutterstock has finally leveled out at an amount just short of half of what I was getting before per day.  I would say uploading still has a big effect on downloads at shutterstock.
