Here's something and I wondered what people here think? I have two new files one yesterday and one today that will be easy to track, one is #6 (215) results in a two word search, the other is about mid-page, (1600) three word search.

Anyone else care to watch a newly accepted, distinctive Single upload and see how it's lasts or falls each day?

Might be interesting to see what happens. Files that have 10,000 results aren't going to be easy to follow, so if you have something around 1000 or less, give it a shot please?

Part two, people are complaining that new files get a boost and old files are being pushed to the bottom. So it appears, no matter what SS does with the search, people will be unhappy?  :)

last two times I have uploaded I have monitored this with a magnifying glass and so have two pals of mine here and with identical findings and results.

New files get one day of exposure and the one/ones that sell will remain, all the others will just fade away never to be seen.

This is IMO, far too little. Just by coincidence  not one single file might sell which means theyre history. Lots of work just goes to waste for nothing really unless some manage to sell in the span of 24 hours.

In retro it means one can sit there uploading to kingdom come and not make a penny more.

Hmmmm, taking something said by that person as being meaningful or accurate is a bit like relying on the lottery for income

If you look at the quoted artist's new files, they are very much the same as the previous 2000. All very nice work but not different from his already existing port.

Hmmm. A few sentences later your man is agreeing with the suggestion that SS should "tighten up on similars" thereby wiping out 50% of his own port.

Nothing personal but I read his posts for amusement....not business insight

OK before the whole idea gets derailed because of picking. And I don't really care that much about a free boost, because I think files should sell based on quality not some artificial adjustments. And I've always been against people uploading 50 of the latest shoot (same model, same clothes, same props...) or inch by inch collections. Or worse yet, take one shot and do 20 color variations, no other changes.

I'd agree, which will upset some people, but similars are making the selections worse for buyers and making it harder for customers to see what's available.

But we're in the situation where usually if someone uploads a new image, there are going to be 10,000 similar images or subjects. Kind of hard to be noticed, isn't it? They must go someplace or just get buried and never have a chance.

If a good image gets a few days up top, near the top, whatever, then it at least has some kind of chance to be noticed, instead of being placed at the bottom and buried, or even in the middle, and never getting seen because it's 50 pages into the search..

Here's the question and maybe some people can watch their own. I uploaded two images, one on the 17th, which is #6 in the search of 215. Another on the 18th which was #13 in the search of 1600 files. Yes, not a really common subject.

The second one is now #48, still on page one. (it's not anything important, "isolated on white", I don't expect a DL, I see a number of better shots on the first page) The first one from the 17th, (Whoo Hoo) Is now #1 for a two word search! It went up?

The question isn't politics or who made the observation, but is a good question.

How long does a newly accepted image get a boost over older established materials?

Makes me wonder if it's variable depending on how many others there are, like against 1600 the drop is slower than up against 16,000?

I think quality stands up for itself no matter how many of the same concept there may be.
I say just keep on plugging along and your sales will do the same
But then again I am the best so my stats don't count

:)

Admin note - please do not add images to every post.

Update - 4th day online for these two files. No DLs either. They are different presentations of the same subjects. They haven't fallen from the graces of the SS Honeymoon on the search yet.

Photo one: Is #6 today. (two word search) it's been up one day longer and ranks higher.
Photo two: Is #19 today? Hmm, moved back up a little? (three word search)

More and more I'm starting to think this is a matter of a boost slot, by FIFO, newer files go into the boost slot, until pushed down but other newer files. Old files stay where they are by whatever other ranking, sales, size, views, location, who knows what. (or what else?)

Eventually a new image with no sales will sink to the bottom limits.

It's all about the subject of the image. I submitted a superb image of a church. Within 24 hours is went down to page 8. But another concept image is on its way to become a new bestselling image. It really is about subject. Said person keeps submitting similar images. Diversity works.

Church 380,000, collage 118,000 - I'd agree with you.

Photo One today #6 of (215) Firefox & IE, #12 Chrome  ???
Photo Two today #34 of (952)Firefox & IE, #50 Chrome  :o

I'll propose the theory that files don't get bumped down, until someone else (or oneself) uploads a newer file with the same keywords. Key here is, Theory, with minimal evidence or data.

I'll need to test a more popular subject / keywords and see how fast it falls.

It seems like every time I do an upload to SS my income crashes. Not like they rejected a bunch. I uploaded 77 on Monday, they were reviewed on Tuesday (WOW, that was fast!) and I got 6 rejected. Anyway, On Wed, Thur, Fri my income dumped 75%. It's only been a few days of poor sales so I am not concluding anything, just that last week was rather unusually low for me in SS sales and that I've experienced after other uploads yielded the same behavior. Such is the life of MS.

Strange isn't it? I wonder if this "they turned off my portfolio" has something to do with new files and they (SS) do turn things off, while the new are registered into the database? Sounds strange, but remember all that files appearing, disappearing and missing from the port but getting sales. Then they would show for a day and vanish again?

Simple solution, turn off all access, while the servers around the world get in sync. then turn back on.

I wouldn't put anything you suspect, past being reality. No way we would know or be able to check, is there?

I'm tired of watching this, and nothing changes. Time to wait a week and see what happens.
[Feb 24th post]

Photo Two today #34 of (952)Firefox & IE

I'll stick with the theory that files don't get bumped down, until a newer file with the same keyword search terms, gets added.

If you add something that's popular and there's a constant influx of newer files. The images will migrate down much faster, than something with less similar content.

Not Earth shattering or revolutionary. Just simple logic. (unless it's wrong of course!)  ::)

[updated March 11th]
Photo one has moved down one spot to #7 in the search.
Photo two has moved UP one spot to #33 in the search.

Neither file has a sale. They were both uploaded and accepted the same date.

Feels kind of silly to reply to myself, so for now I'll just update.
