I thought they didn't want public domain images?

Legal, but not good business.  The vast majority of those are available online as free large scans.  They haven't even been edited for quality.

Maybe you should email SS and get them to hire you to run their business.

Answered in 2014, nice link with a complete explanation.

I don't know how they are distributing and have legal rights, but they appear to be?

"Everett Collection was established in 1990 by Morris Everett, Jr. and Ron Harvey. The firm's origins date back to 1961 when Mr. Everett began collecting stills on virtually every film ever made. Over time his collection expanded to include posters and lobby cards, and by the late 1980's he amassed one of the world's largest private collections of entertainment photography. "

Also: "Everett Collection is an entertainment photo agency with an unmatched archive spanning the history of film and television and now theatre combined with current red carpet celebrity events. Everett also offers vintage stock photography and footage for advertising and design and now represents several important world history collections such as Mary Evans, Mirrorpix, The Advertising Archive, AISA, Mondadori, The CSU Press Collection, DPA and Rue Des Archives."

For those who are concerned about these kinds of works, there are currently people, still uploading Public Domain images to SS. I'm not one of them. Just noting, in general the activity has been disallowed since 2012.

Making this all more convoluted, from SS: "Vintage content is images or videos produced between 1930 and 1990. It is not the same as public domain content to which the copyright has lapsed, and which we do not accept. Shutterstock can accept vintage content for commercial or editorial use if it is not in the public domain and only if accompanied by all necessary releases."

I think that covers most of the answer?  :)

Editorial?

Well, I think that SS is happy that someone had the gumption to collate all these publicly available images in a coherent collection so that they all could make some moolah! All that free stuff in one place  to save everyone's time....it's almost a public service!

Remember...the rules do not necessarily apply to everyone!

And I remember that SS makes the rules, and runs the place, so they can do whatever they want.  :)

They have contracts with other suppliers, that essentially uploaded entire large collections to SS, reviewed lightly if at all, and they compete with us, with a favored status. We get restricted and they get to supply things that buyers actually want. Not fair, I don't like it, but back to SS runs the show.

As many have written before, nothing is about us or caring if we do better or make money, the only goal for SS is to make themselves more money. So if they favor someone else, change the search or do something else that lowers our earnings, no one should take it as a personal attack. SS only cares about the bottom line, making more money.
