Title: Dinner with Shutterstock & Jon Oringer
Post by: melastmohican on November 18, 2012, 01:18
Is this for real? I just got this email:
"
I work with Jon Oringer at Shutterstock and we're going to be in San Francisco  and were wondering if by any chance you might be free that night to join us for dinner? I apologize for the short notice, but we just scheduled the trip and would like nothing more than to meet with a few of our best local artists. It looks like dinner will be around 7pm, but I will have more information tomorrow if you think you may be able to make it.

Looking forward to hearing from you,

"

Why wouldn't it be for real?

If you have a ton of photos on SS and you sell well, I think it would be real. Sometimes companies do take care of their top people. Even istock had that "phone powwow" with some of their top providers (unfortunately it turned out to be a waste of time). This sounds like a great opportunity for SS to give some face time and see what some contributors think.

If you are in doubt, don't reply to the email. Send a new one to Meagan and ask. I guess it's possible it could be spam.

totally agree..

if you don't meet the requirement above, it is spam..

Just in case it is for real, please delete the reference to when and where Jon will be having dinner, just in case there are any nutters out there!

Doesn't look like there is any reason it isn't real. SS seems like they are interested in reaching out to their contributors for their opinions and to get to know them, so this looks like an extension of that. Nice gesture. I say go and grab a free meal.  ;)

It's a good practice.  When I worked for a tv/film, the big guy was a bit of an enigma - he would have breakfast with 10 or so a once a month - secretaries, executives, mail clerks - just to keep is finger on the pulse.

The only dinner I might get invited to is from Crestock for my one sale last year... :-[

just check to see what the email address is.  It should be... [email protected] if it is a shutterstock employee.

To add to this, mouse over any links or email address in the email. Once over the link, wait and it will show the real address or real link. It's easy to write and adress and point to another one when doing reply.

To me it might make sense if they are in that area and that you are an active and selling contributor at Shutterstock

Did he say it was free?  If it's not, tell the cashier you think you should only pay 38-cents for the meal, and do it loudly so everyone can hear you. See what happens.   ;)

IS invited me once, but when I showed up I was rejected for "edges too feathered or too rough".

Or you could cut to the chase and read the email headers (view the email in full including headers) which will show the originating IP address. The originating IP address in the top header cannot be spoofed IIRC. Then you can lookup the originating IP address.

Or you could send them an email back at the address - type it in rather than using reply. And ask them if the original email is genuine.

Jezus *, just send an email to shutterstock and ask them. Nobody here knows if its for real, only SS can tell you. And doing all this backtracing, whois, internet headers, sherlock holmes BS isnt going to give you an answer either.

Why would you do such a thing?
There are friends enough to dine with.

On the other hand, if that guy came knocking on my door and looked starving and cold, it would take him in and feed him a bowl of chicken soup and heat him up. Just as I would anybody else in the same situation.

But he wouldnt be in that situation, would he?

I would reject due to "Focus is not where we think it should be".

Who sent you the email? Have you looked up their name to verify that they actually work at SS? LinkedIn can be helpful with that.

I wouldn't be surprised if SS was doing this. They have been reaching out to a lot of contributors for interviews. I had a couple of guys from SS over my house to see where I work and talk for a couple of hours. They're doing a lot of Skype/phone interviews as well, from what I hear.

Adding Jon into the mix is a bit of a surprise, but I wouldn't immediately doubt that it's a genuine invitation.

That is right, I was interviewed (via skype). They were nice people, and I had the feeling that they listened and asked relevant questions.

What a contrast to other agencies.
Both the dinner and the interviews.
Maybe they have observed the fatal damage it can do, if an agency annoys its contributors too much.

It's cool that they do this and I take it at face value. I think they are genuinely friendly and bright people. That's been my experience of dealing with them recently too. What a friendly contrast vs the arrogant snarkiness we get from IS these days.

The real reason for the trip was business in Paris,  only stopped in Munich for a few hours for dinner.  There is a Photography Trade Show in Paris.

They didn't even have time to visit Munich's wonderful Christmas Market . . . . .
