Title: Does SS gives your images into public domain??
Post by: Axel Lauer on April 30, 2014, 14:08
Can someone explain why i find my images here and what Shutterstock has to do with them?
http://www.publicdomainpictures.net/ (http://www.publicdomainpictures.net/)

"PublicDomainPictures.net is a repository for free public domain images.
The pictures are free for you to use and you should feel good about doing so.

They offer paid images as well - that's what the SS images are.

Click on a link and you're on the SS site.

Ok, but how come that your / my images ended up there?
Whats the connetion between SS and them?

And to be honest - i dont want to find my images on a website stating;
"Welcome to Public Domain Pictures"

There are enough people out there thinking that "internet = free content" and i really dont need more hassle than i already have with thiefs and other crooks.
And a website that gives that kind of impression is absolutely dispensable to me

That site also has links to what is apparently malware.

ie Genieo - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genieo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genieo)

Quote
As of April 2014, Genieo for Mac is flagged by Intego (mentioned above)[8][10] and, according to an analysis at VirusTotal, by 20 (out of 50 surveyed) anti-malware solutions, including Ad-Aware, Avast!, Bitdefender, Comodo, Dr. Web, ESET, Fortinet, F-Secure, Kaspersky, Trend Micro Housecall, and Sophos.

They might be some sort of 'partner', operating as a bait-and-switch.

Why is SS so impolitic to deliver a fraudelent bait&switch-site wich spreads also malware with our images?
That crappy PD-site cant drive that much user to SS that its worth to risk such a reputation-damage, or am i wrong?

I don't think Shutterstock has anything to do with it.
Looks like somebody's trying to use the "free" keyword to generate referral income on Shutterstock.

So if they are not an official partner, why not take it up directly with SS?

Take what up? That they are placing links to Shutterstock onto a webpage?

They make profit on clicks, SS just advertises there, same like on many other pages offering non copyrighted images

Why don't ask directly to Shutterstock?

I have come across many of these deceitful sites in my stock photo-buying travels around the internet. From the buying perspective, once i know the site is trying to hoodwink people, i would never buy from them anyway. From a contributor perspective, i agree with the op...seeing my images on a "free public domain" image site makes me mad. On the bright side, at least the image links to ss, instead of being stolen and given away.

Why don't ask directly to Shutterstock?

Not so difficult…

Here is the Shutterstock answer:

"Thank you for your email.

The website you have inquired about is an authorized Shutterstock affiliate. This means that when a visitor to that site clicks on an image or download link to that image, they are redirected to Shutterstock. There, the visitor can then purchase a license to the image the way any other Shutterstock customer would purchase a license to the image."

You have asked this same question before, and the answer is still: Sites can use the Shutterstock API show results from Shutterstock and try to earn referral income. You should be happy about this. Site like this push thousands and thousands of visitors to you images on Shutterstock.
