Can anyone clarify the difference between an editorial photo and a press event photo? I uploaded 5 images to SS and they were rejected for "proof of Press Credentials needed". I thought an editorial image was just that, editorial. Confused...thanks

press events are usually editorials , yes you are right. only ss needs you to prove you had a press pass thus the rejection reason..credential reqd.
you need something like a letter from the organization of the sports event, etc to say you had the permission to shoot as a press photographer.
or if a public event, a letter to tell ss it is so.
complicated, confused still??
it's just that many events eg grand prix, tennis,etc... do not allow usage and ss is just playing it safe
like IT images (eiffel tower, john deere ,etc or currency)

Thanks, they were the only site ( BS of course too) that rejected them for this reason.

from SS:

Images or footage submitted for editorial use that have been taken at the events listed below require proof of credentials before they will be reviewed:

Sporting events (including those taken at non-collegiate schools or recreational, non-professional events)
    Concerts
    Festivals
    Trade shows
Theatrical performances (including those taken at school performances/theater)
    Conventions
    Openings
    Ticketed events

So basically they are excluding a good percentage of microstock photographers and only allowing the serious professional photographers. This is microstock and the images are selling for peanuts...if they want serious photographers who take the time to get press passes/credentials, they should pay macrostock prices for the images and not offer it on Shutterstock, a microstock agency.

Not being allowed to submit editorial images from basically any event (according to their rules below) is ridiculous. Once again, they have turned the concept of microstock into something where they can get professional photographs for a microstock price. Any serious professional who continues to submit to these places must be very desperate for pennies.

my thoughts exactly.
such press credential-ed images should go into a "prime/premium" section..
ss has a premium section in offset but it's not really meant for editorials of such credential.

yes, one reason i don't subscribe to ss kind of credential press work
almost insulting

btw, did ss not joined forces recently with some AP conglomerate of sorts???
that is where the credential-ed press photos should have been re-directed
and to carry a higher price with getty competitive-ness market

Just curious of how many of you that are complaining about how you need to prove that you actually have permission to shoot at the event have actually tried to get permission? Reason I ask is so far I've had good luck. Usually not a huge amount of energy is used either finding or asking for credentials either.
Now granted I did get rejected at some places due to no "assignment" from a media outlet. I have since created my own website and my success rate has gone up quite a bit since then. It's actually better then it ever was when working with SS and their "On the Red Carpet" program they used to run.

Now the only thing is credentials are only required really if it is an event with restricted access. You know private property, requires tickets to get in stuff like that, or if it is a free open to the public event and you are shooting from a restricted area location. Think free concert but shooting from the pit. If it is a free and open to the public event email [email protected] let them know they usually will give you a case number to reference. Have done this many times due to some of the events I cover that are public access but since they are sporting events SS balks at first.
