My downloads at SS have declined alarmingly.
None of my best sellers have been sold yet.
My portfolie has been in weekend mode for 7 days.
Also at AS things are unexpectedly very bad.
Nothing is going on at P5 so far, but that's nothing new. I've always had very few DL there.

I guess there is the recession, economy, omicron, also in play and things are getting worse all the way down the line.

What recession? Canada is not in a recession at the moment. Neither is the US...

Depends on what industry you're in I guess, I am in Ontario and in Ontario and Quebec it's near impossible to find any job
Sorry for your troubles, but Canada is not in a recession and neither is your province.
Besides:
Employment in Ontario rose for the sixth consecutive month, bringing the province's unemployment rates back below pre-pandemic levels.
https://beta.ctvnews.ca/local/toronto/2021/12/3/1_5692371.html

Yep!, if you read the job reports in the media all through the pandemic you'd think it was the best of times here and the non-stop stories about the labour shortage and "employers can't find workers", I can start tomorrow, not looking for anything special and min wage is fine.  I've been looking for a year and looking and applying HARD since May because the writing was really on the wall for stock video and nothing yet.

If I have the time this weekend I need to deep dive into those stats and see who is actually hiring because just yesterday a company here laid off 5000 min wage workers.

It seems the same in my town which has been declining for years. ie shops boarded up outdoor market with less stalls but my country overall is not in recession. I watch someone's videos on YouTube where he looks inside large abandoned houses in Canada that had been empty for years. He never seems to run out of houses to explore. Maybe they were abandoned during a recession

but now the end product is basically free so no matter how good or creative you are there is no money in free or nearly free music or stock or anything else that's been devalued and disrupted by startups.

but there IS money in free -- in addition to stock, film and music continue to be produced despite your claims that startups ruined everything. you have to be flexible & willing to face the market as it IS, not how it was yesterday and not how you wish it was. paradigm shift happens

seems like some grapes are just getting more sour

Honestly, when were "the arts" ever really a viable career path? :)

Great point although before April 1 2019 happened I was making $140k to $160k/year when you added up my P5, SS, and videoblocks revenue, and I've read that others did much better in stock before the agencies cut pay and started doing direct deals with distributors and buyers leaving us with a few one-off sales.

Today though I would 1000% not recommend it, I think it's borderline fraud that the colleges and universities here still sell those programs as viable career opportunities, we have 16-17 year old high school students going to these career fairs and being told this is a great career opportunity.

Music was a career for some but now unless your big enough to tour you're paying to come to work with that you can make off Spotify, it's worse than stock video.

There's no money in it today, anything arts related but maybe it could be a side gig that pays once in awhile but not a job.

There's no money in free.

I just regret so much not getting out when April 1 2019 happened, could have got out debt free too.

First I have serious doubts that you can go from 160k per year to 0 per month overnight. Secondly, where did you spend all the money? Because those are big amounts. You certainly knew, that wont last forever, don't you have any savings?

Videoblocks closed to individual contributors, sales crashed at my #1 which was pond and SS was never that strong, I kept operating full tilt, upgraded equipment and put in a ton of hours, 18 hour days on the road filming and the upload/tag/repeat.

I didn't see April 1 2019 coming, sure nothing lasts forever but I didn't see warning signs until around March 15th when other contributors started saying sales stopped and the it hit me on April 1, keep in mind taxes, expenses and next thing you know I am pulling out the credit cards, I stayed in way to long thinking I could pull off a recovery and now it's not gonna recover, the market has changed too much, barely a hobby that pays now.

It sure was good while it lasted, was looking at the old tax returns for the paperwork I have to prepare and if definitely was good back then.

Too tired to write an essay tonight but here's another story on how amazing the economy is in Ontario Canada and the last paragraph talks about nearing full employment and worker shortages.

https://www.bnnbloomberg.ca/canada-caps-record-jobs-year-as-monthly-gain-doubles-estimates-1.1704364

The bulk of this years gains will be driven by newcomers to the country, rather than the pandemic unemployed returning to the workforce. Prime Minister Justin Trudeaus government plans to increase immigration levels this year to new highs, while foreign students have begun to return after border restrictions were lifted last year. Employment of native-born Canadians has been flat for almost a decade.

If the recovery doesnt stall, workers shortages are likely to become the big labor market issue for 2022.

Were not going to be able to add 100,000 jobs month in and month out, RBCs Nye said. The jobless rate falling below 6 per cent is an indication that were probably nearing full employment.

Not having the skills or training to benefit from one of those many available jobs is your personal challenge.

Sounds like poor cash flow management and no understanding of how to run a business.

Also, blaming immigrants is lame. How is it they come to a new country with zero references and experience and succeed, yet the workaholic 'Canadian' can't find a job? Seriously, if you can't find a job then you are not applying yourself.

You actually come across as self entitled and a victim in all of your rants.

I'll give you that, I should have closed the business and walked away two months after the massive sales drop at pond on April 1 2019 but you always think it's gonna come back, maybe just a "summer slump" as they used to call it.

Not blaming the immigrants from India, they are here legally, but come visit sometime and see who is working and who is in the homeless shelters, once the Indian mangers are in all the black, Asian and white are gone and it's all Indian and I'm not looking for anything high end, Walmart, fast food, light industry, whatever.

I wish you could actually come here and see and then try and get a job here, just some entry level or general labour stuff, you'd be a shocked as I was, a friend of mine who is a black student here is also running into the same problem I am.

I'm actually glad that the story mentioned the elephant in the room, no one hires native Canadians anymore, I'm surprised they mentioned it.

You should visit southern Ontario and see for yourself.

Define "native Canadian".

Are you part of the First Nations people, or just the descendent of other immigrants? 😉

Re-read the story from BNN, they aren't hiring native Canadians. Better still come visit and maybe apply for some jobs, I don't  know if you're black, Asian or white but it's all India here from fast food to Walmart to whatever and they will hand your application right back to you if you apply in person and tell you they only hire their own nationality.

I'm assuming A) You are still employed and B) you aren't in southern Ontario.

The story doesn't define native Canadian but I am a white Canadian, born here, parents from Italy, the immigrants we are talking about are from India and they only hire their own, you need to come visit and see for your self and apply for some jobs and be laughed at and told "sorry buddy but only hire our nationality".

I have a black college student here in my building who I've known for a long time and he's been laughed out of every workplace just like me, he is looking for part time as he's in school and I'm looking for full time but we are now both applying for jobs in other provinces for the summer.

You remind me of those woke left wingers who believe there's a job for everyone until you're out of work and suddenly realize no one will hire you because of your race.

Unfortunately, my background is camera work, my diploma is in photography and that's not even a listed skill here anymore, my accountant had to get creative when filing by return last year so I do have to go back to school and retrain for something relevant like perhaps full stack developer or something.

Right now I'm just trying to get a min wage job doing anything I can do and I'm lucky that I will do anything, some people insist on staying in their field, I'd be so much happier doing something completely different to be honest, video served me well but cleaning hotel rooms or working in fast food would pay so much better and I'd actually get paid by the hour so I am actually looking forward to change, just need to get hired.

You said that you don't blame immigrants for your lack of success, but you are shamelessly blaming indian immigrants.

Your family is also a family of immigrants, no different than the immigrants you blame for your incapacity to adapt to the labor market competition ::)

You are presuming I am not from where you are... That is another story.

You sound like a typical WOKE Canadian who is upset by anything and everything and blaming everything and anything on everyone else.

The race card you are bringing up is really a tiring conversation. I also find it intriguing that you have had employers say "sorry buddy we only hire our nationality".

Your conversation is ever changing, consistently weak, and if I was hiring I would not hire you, and yes I am a white Canadian. I am not of Italian heritage so you could use that against me for not hiring you if it makes you feel better.

I watch someone's videos on YouTube where he looks inside large abandoned houses in Canada that had been empty for years. He never seems to run out of houses to explore.

I wouldn't take that to mean anything significant though. Is it Abandoned Urbex Canada? If it is then I mean, 14m houses in Canada, 86 videos total... that's 0.0006% of total houses in Canada.

continued racist nonsense - blame the 'other'

why does ontario have so many problems when BC with a HIGHER % of Indians is performing well?

Province   Indian   Percentage
Ontario   774,495   5.8%
British Columbia   309,315   6.7%

https://bc.ctvnews.ca/b-c-s-jobless-rate-down-to-5-9-still-the-only-province-notably-above-pre-pandemic-employment-levels-1.5616370

and you're claiming about 1/20th of the population is able to control all jobs in Ontario?  unbelievable

That's because your previous "moderated" remark was textbook racism and the admins saw it exactly like it was.

Too bad you don't realize it.

So, what are you doing in a forum moderated by "woke" admins, when there are plenty of white supremacist boards out there?

Up to a point I agree with you, there certainly is a lot of overcompensating going on in the WOKE crowd, but your moderated comment was "textbook racism" (as noted by Zero Talent) and is completely pathetic.

I feel sorry for you.

I decided to try Shutterstock this year again (my portfolio was disabled since mid of 2020). Enabled my portfolio, got 11 downloads in a row of 0.10$ and decided that my decision was a stupid one :). Now I have a disabled portfolio again with a balance of 1.10$ :)

11 days.
Interestingly today I went to level 2 in videos and photos total of 92.70 Adobe 64.35 so far.
I love Adobe and I see that many of you sell more there than SS.
But not with me.
the order is
SS, Istock and Adobe , Pond 5 .....every month.
Maybe lifestyle and extreme sports sell more in others.

Higher RPD yes in Adobe without a doubt..

Good year and sales to all.

I was reviewing my earnings with the SS and came across something that I thought was an image.
I "earned" $0.50. A little more than the paltry $0.10 that I usually get. Further investigation revealed that it was a clip that sold for a minimum $65us.
I think jjneff's "thieves" description is understated.

Still a miserable start of the new year.

SS $27 so far.
AS $80 so far.

But here in Germany, for example, many companies had Christmas vacations until the end of last week. I expect things to get a little better again from the beginning of next week.
