It appears that all my images now carry the improved V2 watermark. Finally!

So now I'm back to uploading to SS again.

good point 60d,,  are we protesting the poor wm or the large dl-able preview?
i personally prefer to go back to just the magnifying glass.
maybe we should be specific if we are asking for a better wmark or to do away with
the dl-able 5 by 7 printable preview

Guess I haven't been too focused on that. The invisible V1 wm was my biggest concern.

So what are you and others doing about the large previews? Are you taking Cathy's advice and pulling your ports out of SS?

For me the huge preview is the primary concern. Due to that,  I  am not uploading to SS. There are other agencies and other ways to earn with photography, and this is actually a great opportunity to discover them, maybe move on to the better. SS was my comfort zone.

Also....I signed the petition and feel that since I did that, it means something.

I signed it too, but didn't go back to check the specifics. I thought it was the wm that was of greatest concern.

But seriously are you going to pull your port from SS if the preview isn't reduced in size?

I totally agree with you! But what other websites are there to "discover"? Most of them are offering big previews now it seems. Bigstock doesn't but I'm sure they will soon ...

Don't know just yet. Pulling the entire port would be drastic. Depends if there are other changes coming.

Don't know if there are any 'new' websites to discover, was thinking of doing more freelance work and selling directly. I do these from time to time.

SS has the largest preview from any other agency and the weakest watermark on top of that. At least there is more time now to do the  Fotolia and IStock keywording properly, ☺ enjoy both of these sites.

drastic, or as another colleague said insane.

i got this from wiki...
Unaddressed protests may grow and widen into civil resistance, dissent, activism, riots, insurgency, revolts, and political and/or social revolution. Some examples of protests include:

Northern Europe in the early 16th century (Protestant Reformation)
North America in the 1770s (American Revolution)
France in 1789 (French Revolution) etc etc etc
    (perharps this one... apolitical protest...
shutterstock contributors protest against over large preview and dl. 8)
for now, we are in the protest stage, ...
but we still have many other stages to go if the protest is unaddressed
...  before we reach insanity or stupidity as to delete our portfolio  ;D

SS really behave like the government of my country.

Contributors are unhappy, but they left with no options. SS did what they want. The end of yet another story.

There is always an option to walk away.

you know, i was just in to see the big preview. sure i don't like the idea of letting the ppl download the 1.5MP or whatever size. but the watermark works well with most images .. ie the shutterstock grey and the x 's . but for some , it appears to be transparent and yes, it's  almost non-existent , like jo ann pointed out.
maybe they should make one black and one grey , and then give us the option to place the black or the grey like they do with the position of the watermark.

it's no point hoping for the old magnify glass anymore. so maybe we ask them for this option.

Shutterstock.com team: Protecting of copyright on Shutterstock.

Quote
Dear Shutterstock.com team,

At the moment, the watermark used in the preview function recently implemented on shutterstock site actually has failed in its main purpose: it is hardly visible, if at all, and it can be easily removed, even without complex manipulations just by downsizing the preview image.

As a result, we feel that our works are now unprotected, exposed to public access and available for download to anyone.

We have specified the list of proposals that we would like to see implemented as soon as possible:

1. Make watermarks larger and more noticeable:

Reduce the pitch of the watermark grid to 100 pixels for more reliable protection of icon sets.
Increase the width of the grid lines to 5 pixels.
The lines of the watermark should be contrast to the background. The pixels of the lines should have at least 15 levels of brightness in contrast to the surrounding pixels.

2. Inform contributors about any changes on the web site relating to copyright before such changes actually made.

Contributors who have signed this petition suspend uploading of the new images until the elimination of the negative consequences produced by Shutterstock.com.

Looking forward to your cooperation

What happened to this petition? Was it delivered to SS?
