Lots of folks pimp images on the SS forum - pointless exercise??  It occurs to me that the "popularity" search is influenced by views even though no counter is visible as the only explanation why files that are online for approximately the same time with less sales are often higher in this search.  Maybe not so pointless?

I think its pointless.  Did it for a while when I first started but I don't think anything beats spending time producing images that buyers want.

Utterly pointless and possibly damaging to sort-order position.

If the Popular search algorithm includes the views/sales ratio as an important factor (which of course it is) then the last thing you want to encourage is lots of your fellow numpties to click on your precious images without the likelihood of any sales.

To be honest the SS forum itself is utterly pointless and possibly damaging to your health on account of the feeble-brained inhabitants that might contaminate you with their idiotic theories.

When I do go over there to look at the forums (maybe once a month) 50-75% of the threads are show me and vote for me. Not really a forum I'd recommend but there are some good bits of info there.

There are buyers on the ss forum, just as there is here.

Yea but when someone pimps a dog in a toy fire engine I doubt that buyers are looking for that.  In fact I doubt that buyers look for their needed images in forums.  The reality is that pimping is like pooping.  The only one that cares and feels good is the pimper/pooper.

There could be a buyer with a subscription, who thought the pimped image was nice, beautiful or usefull and just downloaded it.

"Taxi for JPSDK". You are needed back at the SS forum to be amongst 'your kind'.

Come on!
It happens. You sell a picture or two that way.

Anyway, I have not pimped anything on ss for a couple of years, and it has not influenced my sales.

But  I did manage to brand myself there and other places, partually by pimping.

Which might be the secret effect of pimping.

You do remember bichons in rocket cars, dont you?

Let's assume that popularity takes views into account.  So (possibly) pimping = more views = increased popularity ranking = more sales.

Yeah __ that'll be it! Yuri, Andres and the like must be somehow secretly pimping their stuff like mad (rather than just spending their time producing quality content). Meanwhile all the idiots, sorry, I mean contributors on the SS forum discussing such issues are simply not spending enough time pimping their stuff! *wipes tears from eyes*

Once in a while a little pimping doesn't actually hurt but sometimes you can get lucky and get a sale on an old image if a buyer just happens to be reading a post and says hey you know that is what i could use for my next project.

But overall it does nothing at all for you.

Some of the pimp me threads are just to get you to pimp and then the OP goes back through all the images and gets all of the keywords that make the image a number one image so they to can get their image to the front even if it isnt relevant to the image.

You have to watch some of those pimping post's because they are after your info, sure they could just go to your port but how do they really know which ones are your best unless you yourself put it up for them as they are asking and you are so kindly doing for them since the most popular is goofy right now as it is it would be a guessing game.

Am I advocating pimping? No.
Do I think sales happen because buyers see something in a pimping thread? No
Do I think views of an image in a pimping thread might affect search placement? Possibly
Do I think search placement affects sales? Yes
Your sides must be splitting from laughter at the contributions from the great and the good in all the threads about the impact of search algorithm changes.

In theory you could also win the lottery.

I absolutely agree.  I've never pimped myself, I really have no interest in spending my time that way.

Then, for sure, you dont know if it works.

Pimping must work. There are many contributors on SS forum that have 3000 posts on forum but only 50 lcv images online. They probably concentrate on pimparketing. :-/
SS forum became absolutely useless.

True, but I have no interest in finding out.  Call me weird but, despite much evidence to the contrary, I still have old fashioned notions of thriving on merit.  THE world may not work that way, but I have to insist that MY world does  ;)

As I said: I sold a couple of pictures that way, but not many.
It does not influence the normal influx of downloads.

There can be other reasons to pimp your pictures than sales.

So the buyer contacted you and told you they only bought the images because they spend all their time wading through endless pimping threads?  Or could it of been a coincidence?  I often get sales from images that I haven't pimped :)

Doesnt matter really, its not important.

Yes I have had buyers contact me.
And some of the pimps are buyers as well.

---and again there can be many reasons for pimping:

Branding
Creating searches for google
Seeing what is trendy for a specific subject.
See how your fellow photographers perform
See how a specific topic is covered.
See how a specific topic is not covered
See tendencies in keywords
Mislead your competition
See intrepretation of themes
See new styles
etc etc

And Derren Brown as well. That's a good combination of fact and predictions.
