Title: Please help me get in!
Post by: RH on September 12, 2008, 07:57
Hi,

i´ve cancelled my exlusivity with IS. Uploaded nearly 350 pics on DT (in the last two month).
Everybody told me, i should get in SS. My 1st attempt failed (6 from 10!). :'(

Please be kind and let me know if you think 10 of these 20 images will be accepted.

Thanks a lot and have a nice day

Hard to say. I tried to upload "atrsy" images on my initial applications and they didn't get through. Then I followed an advice from this forum to upload something simple and avoid any hint of what might even remotely be considered as noise and I got in with 8 of 10. That was on my 4th attempt. So, try uploading some simple isolated objects and plain concepts and maybe you'll have some luck...

PS: Don't give up - they are more than worth the initial frustration.

(http://www1.istockphoto.com/file_thumbview_approve/2619084/2/istockphoto_2619084-neon-lights.jpg) (http://www.istockphoto.com/file_closeup/concepts-and-ideas/modern-life/2619084-neon-lights.php?id=2619084)

that could fall into the catagory of 'artsy'... something that is more about colors and textures than it is about actually illustrating something is 'atrsy'

I would say your best chance are these ones

assuming noise and focus are in order.
But where is a link to your dreamstime port?  There wasn't that many to choose from on the istock portoflio if you have 350 on DT

A valid question. I consider "artsy" everything not isolated or representing a single clear concept, something that you would feel inclined to frame and hang on the wall.
"Before the tempest", "Bark of a tree" and "On the highway" would probably not come through.
"Fanfare and flashlight" might have a bit busy background...
The shots with the children, the fruit, balloons in the sky, "feed me" might work out...

If you look at my portfolio and sort by "oldest first", you can see which files got me in (8 of the first ones): http://www.shutterstock.com/gallery-93486p1.html
You can also do the same with other people's portfolios to get the feel of what passes for the iintial upload.

Hi Stan, hi Tyler,
you´re so kind, thanks.

Only selected 20 images (privat lbx), because i think, nobody searches around my whole IS portfolio (1.108 pics) and my DT portfolio (353 pics). BTW: The DT portfolio is an extract from the IS portfolio.
If you like, click on my name and my IS-account. Now you can search through my portfolio or you look at my private lightboxes at the profile page.
Again, thank you very much.

I think this would get in:

- the frozen glass macro - good as background
- baloons in the sky (not the ones with the trees) - i would raise a bit the exposure
- the boy smiling - it's a great photo, however in this low-res version seems that the eyes are not sharp. You should know.
- the smoking funnels (pollution photo)
- the fruits. Good composition, I would pop up the colors / contrast a little. They look a tidy bit flat.

I think you have very good chances of getting in. Try to have also 1-2 isolations on the first attempt.

Good luck!

As I see it, there looks to be 4 or 5 saleable images in the batch.

Saleability, along with the obvious other things, will count for a lot in your submission, as SS will see you are capable of producing images that can sell.

Also, if you are selling successfully on other sites, do let them know where you are submitting,

I would reiterate the advice to pump up the colours a little. Any if you aren't already doing so to resize the images to 4 MPs, it helps with noise, sharpness and focus.

Another two/three questions:

I´m a little bit confused with the SS Model Release. "Description of Scene:" and "Photo IDs:".
Does this means, i need for every single Shot of my Son a new MR ???
Is there no general form for my minor boy available?

At my 1st attempt i´ve got also those message: Not approved - 7 of 10 must be approved. Does this means, the images had been approved, if the others would be okay? Is it useful to put the 6 images from the 1st attempt in the 2nd attempt or do they pending in the queue?

Thanks for any advise.

On the rejections:

I believe the reviewers check your images until there are four declined, then the entire batch fails.  The images that "passed" the first time would have been accepted if THAT REVIEWER was reviewing the entire batch.  The images without comment were probably not looked at.
To assume that the images without notes will pass the next time is a false hope.
From the general feel of everything I've read, it's best to try again with entirely new images.
I've seen threads on this, many photographers have tried for MONTHS to get in. Some as long as six or seven tries (30 days between initial submissions).
The best part of those frustrating threads is the immediate victory when you DO get accepted, and for the first month, you sell like crazy!!
So, good luck, keep trying, don't get frustrated. It's well worth it!
