Title: possible to cut off or slow down servers?
Post by: derek on May 10, 2017, 13:33
A guy over at SS whom Ive known from the very start told me something strange here. He is very very good with softwares and computers etc. He said that in a geographical search they will either halt or slow down servers to certain regions in the world and thereby they can easily direct where they wish sales to go.

I have noticed myself that when SS is going bad so is Adobe and vice versa.

I know sod all about the ins and outs about servers this and that but would this be possible? I mean would it be technologiacally possible?

From my computer experience, it is possible. And it is not stupid as well. For example if a lot of Chinese overload servers with no reason, you can just cut the pipes to whole country.

Yes it wouldn't be to slow down sales but if there were a lot of bots or the like from a region they could throttle that region so buyers could still access the site from elsewhere.

Most of the biggest websites out there do that.
Well, probably even the small one if they have a decent hosting (but they don't get to decide who to "block")... :P

Why would they want to block sales?

Why would they want to block sales?

Sure, if some possible buyer wants to enter to the website he may be welcome... no reason to block...

Pixel8!  I guess they are blocking sales in order to direct the sales elsewhere or rather direct the sales to the people or countries they want to receive the sales!

Why would they care?

Are the pictures on sale located on servers in the country of origin? I doubt it.

Great point. We've jumped from talking about where buyer traffic is coming from to where sellers are located. Of course the images aren't going to be stored by region of upload.

Its all a red herring of course....if SS wanted to hide content from certain countries, those who earn "too much", experienced contributors etc etc they could do that quite easily in their algorithm. I can see no rational reason why they would do that. If their buyers who are "King" in this market got wind of it their reputation would be trashed. I expect this discussion will cycle down the years.

I've conducted tests on the content being shut off or presented differently by region

I had some one in the USA and Australia both search for the same terms on the same days and the results were always identical.

In normal circumstances you'd throttle or shut off a country if they are trying to attack the site in some way. But, in microstock circumstances .. they could be throttling or blocking to slow down submissions or thefts ... as well as the regular brute force attacks.

Also, exchange rates are different for each country anyway but, also worth noting is that different imagery will perform differently for each ... so it's quite possible that they would do it to maximize profit as well.

I think most hosting services have a blocking mechanism, and ... wordfence? In WordPress does as well I believe. It's pretty handy if you've got a small store and only ship things inside the US or something just to shut everything else off.

ISPs and media providers do this garbage all the time. Throttle down the higher usage user so that some stupid child can watch hentai. Meanwhile I'm sitting here staring at an upload ready to throw my goddamn computer through the window.
