Have you noticed it? Is it their version of B/M? I hope it works better than on other sites that have it (catastrophic on IS and FT)

I've searched for my bestsellers and in the first few searches popular works way batter for me than relevant. In one case relevant puts one of 2 similars with identical keywords but way less sales ahead ??? . These best match searches really never seem to work, I hope buyers will stick to the popular and that SS won't make relevant as a default option.

By coincidence, when you posted in the other thread about Yuri's keywording tool being down. I tried the first one suggested, and all I saw was how the particular search I tried was far more badly spammed on Shutterstock even than iStock. Strangely, when I then tried the same search in the tool Leaf suggested, it was a 'clean' Shutterstock search. i'm guessing that Leaf's suggested tool automatically puts quotation marks around the search term.
Really, BM2 was working well on iStock (spamming was penalised) until they started denigrating best match in favour of pushing A/V (spamming was ignored in favour of A/V).

That's exactly what I had in mind. FT's was working well as well, before they copied it from IS and totally ruined it. At least IS now has a price filter which helps quite a bit.

Maybe unrelated to your subject but I did notice that "Most Sales" is not necessarily "Most Popular" on SS.  It seems their "Most Popular" is based on a ratio of Sales to Views?

Not sure but do see that a new image makes it to the front of Most Popular as soon as the first time it sells.

I was always thinking it was sales in a given time period, you can think of it as DLs/month (like you can check your stats at IS). It would at least be the most logical option, since a good image will sell well from the start unless the search engine is punishing it, like it does on IS (favouring A/V and old files).

That's how IS and SS weight their popularity rank, which throws some people when they see their images sinking.

On SS it's a honeymoon, on IS they screwed our rank in the search, when it's the same thing. Odd how perception alters reality?

Since we can't see the rank dropping as much on SS and we do see the immediate boost in sales, they always come out looking better. Don't get an initial sale on IS and blam, it's down the pages in a week.

Yes, the automatic is based on downloads in the last 30 days, so 1 in 0 is a huge number, and when the images get re-ranked, 4 in 30 makes them fall. I lost my notes on the default, but I did track is a few years ago, and that's where the Honeymoon came from, plus a small collection of buyers who appear to download just about everything new that's half decent. That's also where the feed the beast comes in, they are looking at new and see our old stuff, and grab that along the way, if it's attractive. Nothing new, the files drop and drop further into the depths of the other millions of images.

Alamy's boost is smaller and similar, but everyone new gets a rank of The Middle and you can go up or down from there, but you don't start out last, trying to catch up.

Since I don't work with other agencies, I gave up looking at how they fudge the facts.  ;)

The microstockgroup keyword tool is based on the 'popular' search at Shutterstock. Quotes aren't added.

SS, have got the best search engine of all, always had popularity and it pays all the way. Closely followed by DT.

Only reason IS, dont dare to use Popularity, is that independants would score as much as their exclusives and thats in their opinion "unfair". i.e. they put private matters before business.

Price-filter? it doesnt help at all!  its being perceived by buyers as a quality-filter and in the case of IS, the lowest price is meant to be the rubbish?

I have an image on page 1 of most popular (for martial arts) that hasn't had a dl in 6 months.  So that's weird.

Maybe somethng like that + it has relevancy for a kinda short and recent time period. I have handful of pictures in the first lines for young brunette with most popular, none of them are spectacular sellers at all, they just do ok imho. I also suspect that viewsa have more effect on it, ergo there's a lot of ppl looikng at them but fewer buying.

Must be the number of keywords that led to a download relative to the total number of keywords . I think this model is more adapted to the agencies using CV . The problem is I'm already seeing images on top of 1st pages for some terms that are obviously keyword spammed . So for now it looks more like a lottery search . Let's see what the sales show the next couple of months

what do you define spamming? I have quite a few shots of teens, who are very obviously not women but young teens, but always I do insert "woman" a... and voila, they have been downloaded for "woman" again and again.

To use your example - an image with a woman in a suit isolated on white with "corporate ,executive,student,secretary..." . Of course there will be many buyers that will download it even if they were searching for something else but that won't make the keywording relevant .

Unfortunately sales support your opinion:s. No improvement whatsoever since filter implementation.

I've had a major drop in overall sales since Tuesday this week when they implemented the new search option. Re: I have the number one position for the keyword "emergency" that netted at least 4 or 8 d/ls a day and now have had only 2 in three days...all outside the US. I hope this isn't a sign of things to come.

If you're referring to the image 69519853, it comes up first in both the popular and relevant search results. Summer's coming...

I just went to check "relevant" and it's no longer available to me...any way, thanks for the heads-up. I checked it last night when I had relevant, and it didn't even show on the first page...they might be "tweeking" it...

What's really funny about this image is that it was rejected by IS for focus  and "no resubmit"....there loss. SS rocks without a doubt! Anyway, my sales seem to be picking up a little this afternoon...relevant or not.  Fingers crossed...I hope everyone does well!
