I sent my first 10 to shutterstock and they were all rejected.  What a bummer.  I find it hard to believe that they have higher standards then then IS.  These are all files that I have downloads for on IS. I wanted to branch out a bit more and add some on SS but I am re-thinking that now.  She a try again in the 30 days or skip them all together?

many people operate under the belief that is and ss think alike when they can be polar opposites. i find fotolia a very good guage of what ss will accept. try again in 30 days. i think they're worth your while.

Not higher standards, but definitely different.  Shutterstock is my baseline; I submit there first and either fix or discard what they reject before going on to other agencies.  Just out of curiosity, what reason did they give?

No it looks like all 10 not accepted.
Hi,
Thank you for your submission to Shutterstock.

In order for Shutterstock to maintain the high standard of our photography collection, new submitters must receive approval on at least seven (7) of their first ten (10) images to continue uploading. Unfortunately, while some of the images you submitted may meet our guidelines, we are unable to approve the requisite number and have temporarily disabled the uploading function on your account. This decision was based on concerns about quality, composition, lighting, or other features of your initial batch of images and we have listed the reasons below.

We invite you to resubmit in 30 days. In the meantime, you can still post banners, earn money from referring photographers, and participate in our forum discussions. Please do not create more than one account; doing so will result in permanent suspension.

Thank you for your interest in Shutterstock. We look forward to seeing you again in 30 days!

My advice would be to use the SS forums.  Show some pictures you're thinking of submitting and get the crowd's reaction.

Focus is easy; make sure you look at the image at 100%.  And use a little Unsharp Mask, especially if you shoot raw.  If the pictures still don't look sharp, pick something else to submit.  As for composition, you'll need to learn to frame your images better.  Do a search for keywords like the images that were rejected and see how they framed the shots.  That'll give you an idea of what they expect.

Thanks for the advice, I can use all all the help I can get.  I still think they are a little crazy, all 10  have downloads at IS. I will try back there in the 30 days and see what happens. Thanks again.

Hi Craig :)
You've got 5 approved! You only needed 2 more!
Bummer!
30 days because of only 2 photos ...
For your first try, 5 approved, not bad at all!
Well done!
To answer your question - is it worth it?
Have a look at those numbers on the right. SS has been sitting pretty on top for a very long time. It's not for nothing.
So yes, absolutely, try again!
From a newbie point of view, if you're not on SS, you're nowhere really.
Take your time, don't rush into anything and get a few more shots ready.
Have you got any isolations? Try one or two of those, they love them.
Remember to watch out for noise and focus, it's important. Think stock, avoid pets and flowers and you'll be fine.
Don't worry, once accepted it gets easier.
Also would be a good idea to join their Critique forums, post your photos before submitting and ask for advice. They're a great bunch over there and you'll get plenty of help.
Not that you need it that much, you were so close, so close...
Good luck!

Whatever you do, don't give up on Shutterstock! They are a more reliable earner than IS.
Have you tried Fotolia? They have overtaken SS as my number one earning site three month in a row. They have similar standards to SS for photo's (note, very different for graphics), but without the initial trial.

You got 5 approved and that's great! I would strongly suggest posting future application pictures on the SS forum first for some feedback. Once you get some positive feedback there, you will be more confident that the application will be approved. A month is not that long so you better start going through your portfolio :) Good luck!

Also, use that 30 days to build up some more pics. That honeymoon period will be more enjoyable with the more approved images you have.

You would be better off sending in 10 new images.  I tok eight shots before I passed.  The first time they gave rejection reasons for four images; so I thought six were ok.  The next time I submitted those six I thought were ok and added four new ones.  The second review showed two of the six original images I thought were ok and two of the new ones were given rejections. Four times in a row - they rejected all ten!  I just about gqave up.  I waited a year and took  the advice of an old timer that was well established.

He advised me to pust the color a tweak, uses the Unsharp aplication slightly (Amount 50, Radius 1.2, Threshold 1), and Resize to 4 MP.  On that final try I had 8 out of ten passed.

Don't qit - you can do it!

Thanks, again everyone for your feedback, This is a awesome group of people here and I am proud to a part of it.  I will try again for SS. I do  have a small portfolio at big stock, so for now at least I have some on there partner site.

I've just had an image rejected at IS that has been accepted at FT, DT, BS, 123 and CS !!  NO LOGIC in it !!  ;-)

I even modified it to suit them and they still rejected it !  :-(

I would use Unsharp Mask very cautiously. Depending on your camera, you might already have a noise issue and sharpening only makes it worse. Other than that, I agree with the comments above.

Heh. I just had an image accepted at IS, which has been rejected by FT, DT, BS, 123, etc... I'd agree with the ambiguity of reviewing images... :) Sorry to stray away from the OT.

Thanks You all have made me feel better.  Appreciate the the feed back.

Made me feel better too !!   :D

Just checked back at my first and second attempts, and if you're right, I have 7 accepted and didn't know !!!  Wow !  ;D

That should make the next attempt a lot easier :)  Thanks for that.  Pity it's not better advertised, or mentioned in their rejection notice !

Just to add :  one of the images was rejected for 'Keywords' and at least two others for 'Not stock material' or 'Not required at the moment' !

I thought we were doing a Technique test, to see if we were up to it or not, but obviously not !!

At Alamy this was the case, and iStock (I believe) , because u then have to upload again for stock approval.  Now I am aware of this, it will effect my choice for next time :)
