But it's free (for occasional reads).
I found this quote from the PMC CEO most interesting. He "...saw a better opportunity in aligning the PMC brands with Shutterstock, which we believe to be the ascending platform for imagery and video”. Also said they were worried about Getty’s current financial condition.
Oringer was quoted as saying that an issue for SS was getting access to events, and this deal let them trade their large pool of customers and high volume of sales for PMC's existing spots on the red carpet. SS will sell their archive too.

There's also a quote at the end of the Variety article about WebDAM being a part of this:
"PMC has chosen Shutterstock’s digital asset management service, WebDAM, to support its editorial and creative teams’ needs to store, organize and manage visual content on a cloud-based platform."
And from the WWD article:
"In addition, Shutterstock will become the exclusive photographer at the more than 50 events, galas, summits and conferences PMC produces annually, including Fairchild Summits and Variety’s numerous conversations with top film and TV talent at film festivals, premieres, award shows and executive conferences."

This article says that distribution will be through Rex: "Shutterstock initially will distribute images through its Rex Features news service and to Shutterstock Premier customers."

PMC is what?
-
They must have changed the article access since I read it.
Here is another source, hopefully they will keep it free:

PMC is Penske Media Corporation

Headline is "Shutterstock just went to war with Getty Images"
There's a short item here (referencing the Financial Times coverage)

Will this deal be good for the photographers involved? AFAIK Getty RM (these would mostly be RM photos right?) pays 40% while SS wants to pay 28% across the board, it'll be interesting to see what the deal is and what the reaction by photogs is.

As I understand from this article, it means only more competition for simple contributors like myself. Maybe is good news for the Red Carpet.

Does the Red Carpet program still require years of exclusivity?
-
It´s an interesting deal. Not surprised that with it´s heavy debt burden and lack of a CEO getty didn´t make it. They are probably losing many other smaller deals that we don´t hear about.
Editorial video sells regularly on SS, so maybe there will be an overall boost for their video section with this.

I don't know, I never aimed so high.
Editorial images or footage from showbiz with worldwide interest sure generates revenue but the ones that I could produce (and many others) are only of local interest unless with very generic, adaptable subject.

"The archived and created content will be owned by PMC and available to license through Shutterstock initially via Rex Features and Shutterstock Premier."
So I guess Shutterstock Premier is a separate thing now. Will it only be available to Enterprise customers or are they going to launch a more expensive collection at SS?

That's my guess too after reading this:
".......through Premier we offer custom license packages, additional indemnification, and help with researching the collection.
To add more value to the experience of these large customers, we are currently testing a new collection — Premier Select. During this test, we are working with a small group of contributors. If customers respond well to this test, we will look to expand to additional contributors based on lifetime earnings, giving you the opportunity to consider participation in this collection."
http://www.shutterstock.com/blog/what-premier-select-means-for-shutterstock-contributors (http://www.shutterstock.com/blog/what-premier-select-means-for-shutterstock-contributors) (Mar 16, 2015)
However at the link you provided above they offer a selection of 40 million images + Offset. That seams to be more than just a "small group of contributors".
"Many of you regularly see downloads from Premier customers and you will continue to see those payouts. Premier Select will not change the exposure of your content currently available to our Premier customers.
Ultimately, the goals for this initiative are to meet more of our customers’ needs, while providing additional, premium licensing opportunities to more contributors".
That sounds very promising. Has anyone seen some of these payouts?
-
Premier has been around for a while. That's how large enterprises license regular Shutterstock images. It's how we get those occasional large SOD's. Permier Select is new and is still in test as far as I know.
-
I had a couple of $85 sales there today. First time ever this happened. AFAIK I am not part of any special test program. Was this just luck or maybe the new program is being tested with contributors who didn't know it?

It should be that you have very good images :)

We're all part of Premier, AFAIK. It's just the portal large enterprises use to access the SS library, with a different price structure. I think only very high earners are included in the Premier Select test. I am curious about how that test is going.
-
One got to congratulate them for this deal!

Well thanks, but these same images never got that kind of high value sales in one day before! Between that and the flood of .38 FB sales the past couple days, I think I will retire to some beach and drink mai tais served by lovely tanned servers in leis.
