A news release went out today that begins with the following statement:

"Shutterstock, already the world's largest subscription-based stock photo agency, today announced another milestone: Shutterstock has the largest photo collection in the microstock industry."

And then there is this line:

"The running total published on Shutterstock's homepage refers only to the photographs that have made the cut and are accepted into the collection, unlike other stock agencies that include rejected or deleted images into their "total" figures. "

See the following for the official SS thread:

That is interesting, how do they know?
Probably they would not say so without having reliable information about that site wich starts wits F :-). I would like to know what they say to such a claim.

I've been getting the same rejection  level I've always had there. 22 out of my last 24 shots were excepted.

SS generally like my illustrations but are more picky with my photos always best to split similar photos into different batches and wait until the first has been reviewed before submitting.

Obviously SS don't believe FT 2 million image count either.

...status quo... my rejection rate usually runs about   20% with SS. This weekend however,  I upoaded 65 pix, they rejected 9.  I was happy with that.  And for some unknown reason, my sales today and yesterday were higher than the last 2 weeks combined.  why, no clue.  but i'm not complaining.

You guys missed the marketing speak... said they are the 'world's largest subscription-based stock photo agency'. All this has to mean is that they either have more images than the other subscription based sites or more subscribers.

Sorry, but that is not what they said.  Re-read the release (or the first post in this thread).  It says:

"Shutterstock, already the world's largest subscription-based stock photo agency, today announced another milestone: Shutterstock has the largest photo collection in the microstock industry."

GeoPappas,

You are very correct. :-[ That's what I get for reading press releases when I didn't have any sleep the night before.

I think there is another thread here saying Ft and IS are bigger.

Only Fotolia is bigger but their numbers just dont stack up.  They are either counter photos on multiple language sites more than once or they are count rejects (free section images).

FT state the "number of online images" when you upload an image they kept a tiny thumbnail online whether it is accepted, rejected, deleted or goes to the free section.

Doesn't say anywhere how many images that were accepted and for sale

SS overtook Istock a while back
