Title: Shutterstock going to wrong way.
Post by: Groman on July 05, 2016, 03:51
Something happening.
Sales go down. Search engine is sucks. The image reviewing working like stupid program. Accepting the craps. Newer sell the new contects. Too many spam in the new contects. Too many spam everywhere. Less quality pictures, more spammy scrap. The professional contributors stop the uploading, the sammer uploading more and more and more. Chrasing uploading. Annoyin, stupid rejection reason. Disappearing pictures from portfolio. Buggy earings showing, buggy forum, buggy gallerystats.
We get threatening email, but the spams still on shutterstock. Work harder for less money.
My monthly earings half Less than two years ago, but my portfolio is triple now. We love it. :(

This is our way of earnings for life, and we can't do anything about that. Ss don't care about us.

We are suppliers not employees so long as SS can get what they need why do you think they should care? Thats the way it works

It's obvious the company is losing its way, which is typical after going public in a huge bubble of hype.  Too many new hires, too much pressure to boost profits in too short a time, too many new execs watching their stock options instead of what's really going on in their departments.

In the near future, I see profits of 3 cents and 5 cents per image download...
Earnings are getting worse and worse every year... The agencies throw pennies in our faces and don't understand why we are not happy.

They completely understand it, but as long as assets keep getting pumped into their system they don't care. When agencies get into the 3-5 cents range people will still upload, not everyone, but many. And as long as an agency's competitive response is to keep lowering pricing, 3 cent commissions are on their way.

Indeed, sales go down, this is not good. Since 2006 I sell images on SS, this is the first time I'm seeing a significant drop. It's worrying... :o :(

We should create something like Contributors Union.....

And our own agency. Call when you have it financed, I'm all in.

Getting a union would mean members paying dues and working together for a common cause. You also need leverage against the agency. How do you go on strike when it's obvious that people will upload to any new sit for 25c like they did for Deposit. No power, no union. Sell out for peanuts and pennies, the agencies like IS laugh and offer us 20% or less.

Did you notice Alamy is #2 on the list and Fotolia is #3. None of us should send anything to anybody middle tier or lower.

Because we can make money I certainly don't do it cos I think SS cares about me and I don't care about them and would sell my stuff elsewhere if I could make more

No software needed. Just a app to process and submit. BOOM!! done in seconds. Well....were almost there guys. The sites have been farming for a few years now.

They should definitely care.  That is if they're looking beyond the next quarters earnings.  You can't flood the site with crap, dilute earnings of skilled contributors who do put time into making quality portfolios until your best artists give up, and expect success to continue for long.  Lousy content and unhappy contributors means buyers will eventually go away and their money with them, then profits and share prices take a dump.  Happened at IS, and could be SS is next.

The key being "as long as they get what they need" yes they should care about quality of images and having a good relationship with suppliers but they don't owe anyone a living or have a responsibility for feeding their kids or maintaining their lifestyle

good point. it was like that camera store we once had in NYC during the time i first graduated and started freelancing...
they had the best inventory and the best prices ,
but the service was like sh*t.
the guys in the funny hat literally answer you when you try to make a deal for a better price,
"you want it or not? don't waste time!"

ss is just like that. they have the best inventory.. except for Getty..
 and the best deal,
even with the new garbage, the existing inventory meet the clients' needs.

unless you come up with a "Stocksy/Veer/Canva/Alamy/Adobe/Flickr..whatever.."
that can market their product as successful as ss,
(ie. where most contributors make money and reach payout each month)
no matter if you are Yuri or SJLocke or miss zero or mister muddlehead.
..
ss is still the only outlet a contributor has.

hate them, like the photo store in NYC, you still go there .

Are you kidding? Nobody saw this coming 12 years ago. Microstock was the 'next big thing' and the few photographers doing it were making good money.  Phone cameras were crude and DSLRs were expensive.   Rinderart was looking way down the road and his prediction was spot on.

Point was. Im sad It was correct. My crystal is just as dirty as yours. And I also come from the day when a stock shot gave us $400 US as a commission.

change will come , no matter we like it or not.
rinderart you came from a 400 US commission era,
i came from 250 $ for a weekend article with photos,
... and that was when i just came out from college and working as a photo assistant to
a top local pro from NYC who once worked in the same dept in Polaroid as Ansel Adams.

today, the local papers pays NFA and will only take free photos from anyone with a mob
or the wire photos that cost them nothing either.

we can all scream and cuss but like musicians, writers, painters, etc..
global economy is wonderful for lots of things, but it also broke our lifelihood
as we no longer compete with just the local pros, we compete against the world.

whether the quality has gone up or down the sewer, that's moot
... even though i would say these new breed of atilla who only approved of full dof
and pin sharp all over the photo is something else too.
must like the same breed who wants to GCI everything for perfect better than photo
can dream of.

henri cartier bresson would have got 100% rejection for his decisive moments
and matthew brady too, for his shots with blurred eyeballs, LOL

then again, who wants bresson, brady, etc... when the world is now weaned on
manga and matrix?
but at least david hamilton might win a comeback if mob photos like selfies
become the new flavor of stock photos.

time to pack it in, and get drunk and subscribe to a life of viagra and lithium...
it works for rod stewart, mick and keith stones,...
so it can't be that bad of a life for us old f@rts
