A few more questions:

1.  How many early on Downloads does an image need to have to qualify for one that initially "Caught On"?  (One which should continue to get sales later on).

2.  How many overall Downloads are needed before and image is considered "successful"?

Just Curious  ??? ::)

I would say that those numbers are purely subjective. For a full-time pro, the numbers have to be higher than for a hobbyist just looking to make a few extra bucks.

If you are happy with the trend of your sales, then your images are successful! Don't listen to people telling you how much you need to make in order for it to be worthwhile... If you enjoy shooting (and editing, and keywording, and uploading!) photos, then you don't have to make as much to feel like a success.

If you're strictly business, then you'll need to have more downloads.

it totally depends on the search term.  If it is an unpopular search term then it will jump to the top with only 1 sale/day average.  If it is the search term for something very general like business - it will have to have many many sales/day to jump to the top and stay there permanently.

That question is something I focus on a lot! :)  I only produce 3 or 4 images a week because I try to aim for quality not quantity and I'd say roughly 50% of those do "catch on" - for me that's about 4 to 7 downloads a day per image for a least a week or so, after which it slows down to 1 or 2 a day (sometimes its higher and sometimes lower so that's an average but I have plenty that have been selling like that for years so it really does add up).

The ones that don't "catch on" and which I feel would have but for whatever reasons didn't - I delete them and upload again a month or so later :)
