Title: Shutterstock Instant - alternate search interface
Post by: klsbear on May 19, 2012, 09:46
I saw a SS tweet last night that lead me to a post on the buyer's blog describing Shutterstock Instant a new search interfact they are testing.  From the blog:

Quote
Shutterstock Instant is the world’s first image search experience truly optimized for inspiration and browsing. Instead of trying to add more features to our core website, we thought we’d just re-imagine how a website would work if we focused more narrowly. Our hope is not to replace our current experience, but offer a new one for those of you in the exploration phase.

Looks interesting and I like that it's an additional tool, not a replacement for the current search.  Here's the link to the full post on the blog (http://www.shutterstock.com/blog/2012/05/introducing-shutterstock-instant/#more-10015).

It looks quite a bit like their ipad app which is also very nice.  I guess this is where their R&D money is going.. at least some of it.

I like it except for the large preview.

That's a lot of bandwidth!

I like it - I gave them some feedback on what I think could improve it. It'll be interesting to see where this goes. I love their iPad i/f and this does seem to have grown from that.

I like it too.  It's not even aimed at me, and I'm inspired already!  ;D

A great piece of R&D SS.  Well done to all involved.

Good stuff. The larger preview favors the more pro-ish looking, well retouched clean and sharp images with good looking models imho.

I don't like it all that much.  Its a data dump.

That's a lot of bandwidth!
And it does look nice.

iStock couldn't pull this off because they'd be too stingy to finance the IT muscle for it. Not to mention that they don't even have can't get programmers that can code that stuff.

Oh, please, don't let them even try  ::)

It might be great as a show piece for the IPO crowd, however I would be willing to bet it will kills sales. The large 1000 pixel images make it unbelievably easy to remove the logos.

Remove using spot heal brush and maybe a bit of cloning and then when you are done just resize it!

It's not rocket science.

Genuine Fractals is pretty amazing. I use it myself. It enables photographers, graphic artists and digital imaging professionals to create high-quality, print-ready enlargements from image files of any size or resolution. Provides easy encoding and rendering for all RGB (8-bit and 16-bit), multi-channel, and grayscale images (8-bit only).

I heard that nonsense here about flicker (with a burst of very questionable hate speech about the site and its users). They said something like: 'yeah upload your stuff to flicker like that, and watch your sales tank you fool' So...  I have a pretty darn frequented flicker stream, millions of views. I upload there at decent size, 1200+px longer side, dimunitive logo. I tested. I uploaded few batches of stuff made for stock to flickr first (20-30 pics), even put them into groups, lots and lots of views. Absolutely nothing happened to the sales. Tried it without uploading anything to flickr. No difference between the two. This stuff is fools' myth... nonsense. Stuff like this doesn't make any difference. I also started to see my stuff popping up on allday.ru and sites of the like in packages after a while doing stock. Those were full res, they were not from flickr: they were BOUGHT from the stock sites... so if this really does bother you, you should know that the biggest threat to your stuff IS YOUR OWN LOW PRICEPOINT my friend. But no change in sales from that either, except for growing sales according to a growing port.

A fifty buck piece of software and under a minutes work.

Here is the under a minutes work now add the software and people already think their stuff is being stolen?

Wake up!

At least you photo folks still have a watermark that poses at least somewhat of a challenge to remove. For us vector folks, in any image that's a set of something, icons for example, the watermark on the 1000px preview doesn't cover much. For some reason they've done away with the two diagonal lines as part of the watermark, leaving just the SS logo, so anything that appears above or below the logo watermark is completely unprotected.

Imagine a set of 9 icons. 3 rows of 3 in a single image. 6 out of 9 of them will have nothing covering them. Easy pickings for anyone not interested in paying for anything.

eta: yes I know I "retired" from the forums. But I read about this over at SS and couldn't not make a comment. :)
