New search option appeared for me just now, called Undiscovered. New tab after "Random".

Hope you can see it, they may be doing A/B testing.
So these are files that haven't been downloaded yet?

Very cool idea if that's how it works. :-)
-
yes that seems to be the idea
excellent alternative for customers to have a 'fresh' choice of images to choose from, and great for the contributers whose old or non downloaded files would otherwise be buried, never to see the light of day again.
-
If you mouse over, it says "Be the first to download these images!".

Haha, I bet thats what most of us are thinking!
Only such a small percent of most portfolio's sell regularly, it will be interesting to see if this increases the range of sales across a whole portfolio.
-
Very cool idea if that's how it works. :-)
+1
-
that means it will show files with zero or least downloads for the search terms ! Great idea. Good for all.
-
I cannot see it. Maybe it is not visible for every user.
-
No such thing here.
Seen screen shots of it but that means nothing because I have had unusual screen shots I saved that turned out to be nothing.
Everyone has been talking about it all day long and nothing on the server I am on has changed.
Probably someone messing with the servers.

It works with english language, but not the others.
Btw I think that it is not a bad idea.
-
Yes, the new tab appears in the english version of the interface only. But yeah, it's simply a good idea!
-
The option doesn't appear on my English version though.
Shutterstock is always gradually testing/rolling out new features to gather data on usage and stability... unlike some other site ::)
So some people won't see it - yet.
Cool feature.

Did any of you see and increase in unsold files. I did and those are exactly the files that show up under the new tab.
-
This may boost not only the sales from old files, but from new ones too since I see my latest uploads showing up there. New files (at least the unsold) are now seen in two search filters.
I think it's a very good idea since there are very good images that have become lost simply because they were uploaded in the summer or the weekend, or from popular themes and just got buried under all the others.
-
Good idea
-
Last week I was wondering why I had several downloads of images that were never sold before.
So when you are right this explains it AND it seems that it works too... :D
-
Excellent idea. The "be the first..." is a great 'added value' line too. Working as an art director I often clicked past pages and pages to avoid stuff that has been overused when designing something a bit more creative. This is a great reminder for those who haven't been smart enough to recognize this issue, and it might help less files to get dropped out of the system just for not getting lucky in time.
-
DT has had that feature for years. Undiscovered and Lowest Price. The site has too many hidden links, too cluttered. I wish they would simplify it for buyers and contributors.
-
Nice idea.
-
Nice to see them trying new things (note to Istock: ... and they actually work) although I suspect that this feature will be of limited value. Because the images have never been sold the relevance of the keywords is not taken into account so the results of a search can be somewhat spurious. At DT it might be worth a customer's time wading through such results because 'undiscovered' images are significantly cheaper ... but that doesn't apply at SS.
-
Nice for photos but totally flawed for vectors. Since SS encourages us to upload the JPG version of our vector files as a separate file (and since the JPG version are usually far less popular than the vectors) there are some JPG files in Undiscovered that have already been downloaded as vectors.
-
great idea. Great for the buyers geting an image that isn't already used millions of times before and great for us getting a little more exposure. ... and perhaps a little boost to the lost and forgotten images that really were not that bad.
-
Too bad they didn’t create a ‘Neglected’ images search- than the majority of mine would show up… :D
-
I like it!
-
I think it's a great idea.
I do see some searches though where it's really clear why these images have never sold. I'm guessing it's particularly the case in relatively low volume keywords where there's not a ton of new stuff.
I'd love to post some examples, but I don't think that's an appropriate thing to do in this case - let's just say that if you were looking for fodder for those "crazy stock photo concepts" web sites, this would be a great way to find them :)
-

You user number at the end where it says ######
-
Good both for contributors (more downloads on overlooked images) and buyers (underused content).
-
Very good idea.
Undiscovered files may be like a hidden treasury for the buyers I believe.
-
+1 for Shutterstock :)
-
It could backfire!
Think about it from a buyers perspective for a minute.
A buyer goes and looks at the chit you have and then uses WOM to spread it around that you do crap and have nothing good of any use to any of them and then they start to stay away from your port because you now have a bad rep from WOM from a new search???
It is possible.
-
I have to say my downloads at SS this month are almost double previous months and this is a short month...could be related? When was this implemented?

That might be true for your chit, but I have only 30% that havent sold, and 28% are great images that just never got to see daylight. I have fantastic images that never sold over simple 3 second illustrations that sell like gang busters.
EDIT: Please help me understand the down votes.

Very true. I would love to see this implemented on other sites too, particularly those that delete unsold images after a period of time.
-
This way to push unsold content is better than Fotolias way to make such content cheaper. And it will be more successful, I think. Well done, Shutterstock!

Don't upload chit in the first place. Your port is only as good as it's weakest content, or something like that.

.

It's helped my sales and seems like a good idea - a way to add value to the files and give those undiscovered gems a second chance.

While I believe that uploading chit is not smart what defines chit? Who defines chit? That aside if one uploads chitless work, you cannot control the fact that chitless images generally go right to the back of the pack anyway. Chit or no chit, placement is by far more influential to what sells than the image being chitty. Oh, and key word quality should be in there too as a key factor.

And spelling. I had no idea what rux was going on about a chit, which is something different altogether.
As I don't know what WOM is, I couldn't work out what written note you'd get which would be spread via WOM and backfire on you.
And FWIW, I think Undiscovered is a great idea, as there must be some more confident buyers like to see something which hasn't been used many times, possibly by direct rivals.
-
I translated the comments with WOM = word of mouth and chit = excrement
My thoughts would be that buyers won't be looking at whose "chit" they see in a search (and that's what's most likely, not what contributors do and view their own portfolios) - the idea that they'd waste more time discussing "chit" with other buyers seems unlikely.

Oh, is that an American spelling?
I only know chit as a little handwritten note, though quite specific in usage. (I believe it's from Hindi.)
I agree totally. I don't think most buyers bother much about portfolios or discuss them with others, unless they like someone's unique style.
-
No, "chit" isn't any American spelling I'm familiar with. I think it was an attempt to get past the censorship program, which would not have accepted the word s_h_i_t.
-
It works fine for me. I sold a dozen of old files yesterday. I like it! :)
-
After the first few days, I can state that the sales of of previously unsold images clearly have increased. I'm not sure, what's going happen with my good selling pics, but untill now there is no change.
-
Good or bad, at least those guys(SS) are trying to improve the exposure of the unsold content. Hope it`s positive move.
-

Oh, I thought it accepted sh*t, which is the conventional 'spelling'.
In any case, I don't accept that files that haven't sold are rubbish. On any site, files just get swamped by their equivalent of Best Match on the day they're accepted, and never see the light of day again. Actually, a surprisingly high proportion of my recent sales on iS have been very-low-selling files from 2007/8. As these are mostly from trips, I don't have any updates, so that's fine by me. Also I've noticed that a good proportion of ELs are older files with fewer sales, which makes sense.

That's how I was using the word. I know what Rux was really saying and it is the last word in your sentence. :P

Anybody in the UK (London) seeing this new button?
I'm not.
Could it be OS or browser dependant maybe?

Londoner here too :)
The new button appears fine in Firefox (for me) but not at all in Safari, 26.0 and 5.1.10 respectively btw.
Problem for me is I really like Safari as my browser and don't particularly like Firefox :(
I'm hoping it just a matter of time before I see it in Safari.

I had to delete cookies and empty cache to get the tab to show up.

None of your posts make any sense.

This is great idea from SS, yesteday i have few sales of 2 years old files which so far had no sales.
Big like from me ;)

Thanks - that did the trick in Safari & Firefox

Right.

What is it? Boredom or the weather. Three in two days? One came, posted 30 messages, which were half nonsense and said, "bye". Another wants to know "what if..." if a rock falls in the wilderness will SS make us less or more money. (not really, but I'm trying to be nice)
Future spammer. I think they do this so they're not newbies any more
Right.
I've done extensive study and debate on the Undiscovered. OK well I looked and people agree and disagree? 8)
Some people see it, some don't. You can empty your Cache and it should clear the stored page codes. (cookies don't have anything to do with reading page data by the way)
If you change browsers, and you haven't used that to look at the SS search, you'll see the new format with five tabs.
But here's the important part: It's not user by user. If someone sees the Undiscovered, they will see it on ALL people. SO no one is getting something that anyone else isn't.
All contributors are equal. The difference is in who's seeing the new feature and not seeing it on the site. Eventually as pages reload, everyone will see it.
Go to Shutterstock.com and do a search, any search. If you see the five tabs, then nice. If not, then it's not going to show for anyone or any search.
No one is excluded and no one is getting some added exposure. We're all the same.
Try this if you use Firefox, hold Ctrl+shift and click the reload arrow in the address location line.

I LOVE it
Thank You
Mike
