I have pretty healthy sales on Shutterstock overall, but I have one file that I sell the bejeezus out of. I usually sell it on a daily basis, sometimes 2 or 3 times daily. It's this one:

Not that I'm complaining, I'm just wondering what might have shot this file to the top of the charts. Does anyone else have one file in their portfolio that does significantly better than all of their others?

There has been a lot of activity around the royal houses in the UK and the Netherlands for the last year. And the abdication of the Queen of the Netherlands has just been completed and we have a King now.

Your file is high on the first page of results for the search term "crowns". That is a pretty awesome result, especially with over 800 pages of results for that term.

From my experience, if a new file gets several sales right away, it has a pretty good chance of making it towards the top of the popular search.

It's likely that you had great timing, and great luck when you uploaded that design... as well as a well designed desirable image.

This one of mine sells almost daily; occasionally two or three times daily:

It has sold 212 times so far.  My next most popular file has sold 61 times:

But my third most popular file, sold 48 times to date, is the one I had the most fun doing:

This is probably from people making versions of the "Keep Calm and Carry On" poster - copies and variants are everywhere right now.

I have a picture like that as well - it's an image of corn, nothing special, but for some reason it had many sales after uploading it and now it's on the first page! And that is something, considering there are 1241 pages for the "corn" keyword. So yeah, it's sometimes just about luck. This picture sells almost everyday, sometimes even 4 times a day. And it's even more funny because I was really close to not uploading it. I wasn't expecting it to sell because there are thousand of corn pictures...  :D

Edit: btw, this picture makes around 15 dollars a month. If it continues to sell like this it will make almost 200 dollars an year, which I don't think is bad for just one picture! A CORN PICTURE  ;D

Picture luck is actually annoyingly important.

Thanks for all the input! I hadn't thought about the "Keep Calm and..." posters. That's probably a big part of it.

Turns out that crowns file is a best seller for me across all of the sites that I submit to. Past 500 downloads on Shutterstock after a little more than a year!

Now if only I could think of a few more images that would perform that well...  :)

Yeah, although it has dropped off significantly in the last few months, but this one has had 4800 sub downloads (and many more El's and OD's) since January 2007.
.

Next up?  This one with 488 subs Since November of 2007.

And, like you, I wish I could re-create whatever was lined up correctly for me the day I shot those candles.

I almost didn't upload it, as it was a departure from my comfort zone at the time and it has visible flaws - but they accepted it and it was the #1 photo for "birthday candles" on ss for several years.

And a few at BS as well - funny thing is - it's not even a cake!  It's shaving cream on a cardboard box!  Shot in front of a green piece of paper in my laundry room.
