Anybody bothered with this? galleries I mean. Isnt it a danger that only the gallery images will sell?

No. And no.
I don't see anything to indicate that will be the case.

I put a few together - it's very, very easy to do. I don't have a clue what sort of a difference it has made to sales, but I can see that the galleries are being viewed (there are stats for views by logged in users at the bottom of the contributor page)

As I have always linked together related images in lightboxes at IS with the notion that it might help sales (and it's almost impossible for it to hurt them!), seemed like a no brainer to me

Using your logic, Chris, if you have no galleries and are having sales ... there is no danger.
If you have no galleries and no sales ...  ???

My understanding is that galleries have nothing to do with search placement, and are more like a sort of a personal mini-site within the main site, to show the best of your port.

So I'd say there's no risk of reducing sales of other pictures. While there's a possibility of increasing sales of those in the galleries - although a bit of self-promotion is probably necessary to achieve this.

I have an uneasy feeling.

I fear it has to do with exposure.
Since there now are so many images they cannot be exposed, the agencies find new ways.
So now we can get our collections exposed, where it was our images before, and still is?

But Im not sure of the consequenses.
Is it good or bad? is it a new level of competition?

We are still selling single images, but are our views achieved by collections?
And what do the agencies want to do with the collections? Sell them to eachother?

Why does it have to be something sinister.
Why can't you look at it as a way to increase your sales.
It's a tool for you to promote specific galleries via social networks (if you choose) or by email or on your own web site.
It's also useful to buyers who find one of your images and want to know if there are similar images in your portfolio.
By going to your portfolio the can click on sets and quickly find all the images of one particular subject.
Seems to me like a plus.

I put together galleries of some of the categories I shoot.  Haven't noticed either a positive or negative effect on sales, but it was very easy to do.  Perhaps over time as customers get used to the functionality it may have an impact on sales.

I couldn't find the OK button either but discovered that drag and drop onto the desired gallery works well.

I was just reading thru this ShutterBuzz article.
http://www.shutterstock.com/buzz/sharing-your-portfolio-with-the-world-how-to-maximize-your-traffic

A bit disappointing.  Seems SS is depending a lot on us posting annoying links to social media friends.

Maybe Galleries is just a method to "sort" our portfolios?  Light boxes?

  Am I missing something?

Hi!  yes seen it. I dont know what it is or means really. All I know is they are doing and starting lots of things nowdays, galleries, catalogues, this and that? and in aid of what?  beats me.
Could be revenues are sinking and nowdays they are simply forced to produce, more and more or else there will be lots of unhappy people.

Ah, I see Luis beat me to it :)

Don't feel bad Claridge, It wasn't intuitive for me either.  I had to be coached through the process.

@ Warren

I look at this way.  Suppose I'm a buyer and I find a fabulous weather shot in a particularly unique style.  I look at the person's portfolio and see they have a very diverse portfolio spanning many pages... but all I want to see is if they have any other weather shots.

Much easier and faster for me if I can click on that other tab and look at their 'Weather' category, no?  Of course it does give us an opportunity to select our best work and showcase it also.

There may be other reasons behind it, but for me it just makes practical sense.

Agreed ... I have used the Galleries option for just those reasons.
I was linking to the article about promoting our galleries.  That part I don't think I can use.  Too much like emailing friends asking them to buy my stuff.
Or, maybe I should do that.   :P  ;)

Oh I see.  Sorry... someone around here was incredulous about the whole thing, and I thought that was you.  Must've been someone else.

Yeah... nooo... I won't be using that promotional stuff either.  I'm not into 'social meeeeeeeeja' at all.
